22 MAY 2016 TEMPLE BETH TORAH SHA'ARAY TZEDEK NISSAN / IYAR 5776

PARSHA SHEMINI-4/2/16 Ellen Feldman

The saying “you are what you eat” first appeared in French and then in German in the 1880’s and then brought into English in the 1920’s. But the original place where we find the idea that people and food are intimately connected is in this week’s Parsha Shemini. A significant portion of this week’s parsha is devoted to the laws of kashrut. These laws were given incremently in the Torah. On three separate occasions, the Torah tells us not to “boil a kid in its mother’s milk”, thus prohibiting eating meat/poultry and dairy together. The Torah then goes on to prohibit the ingestion of blood and then finally declares in considerable detail how to identify what animals, birds and fish are fit for consumption and which are not. It is written: “These are the creatures that you may eat from among all the land animals: any animal that has true hoofs, with clefts through the hoofs, and that chews the cud – such you may eat.” What distinguishes between the permitted and the forbidden animals is that by and large only the animals which are herbivores may be consumed for food. Of the things that are in the waters, it is written, “these you may eat of all that live in water: anything in water, whether in the seas or in the streams, that has fins and scales – these you may eat.” Therefore, all water creatures that crawl instead of swimming using fins are considered impure. For the birds the criteria is less clear. The Torah provides a list of forbidden birds but does not specify why these particular birds are forbidden. There is no overall physical criteria that distinguishes pure birds from impure birds. All the birds on the list, however, are birds of prey or scavengers and so the rabbis inferred that this was the basis for distinction. Chicken, geese, ducks, and turkeys are permitted. However, some people avoid turkey because it was unknown at the time of the giving of the Torah, thus leaving room for doubt. But the fact is that kosher birds do not kill in order to survive; this is the same distinction applied to land animals. Shunning certain creatures may be attributed to their undesirable traits, such as flesh-eating animals and birds of prey. If we are forbidden to ingest blood, then it makes sense that we should avoid the flesh of animals and fowl that ingest blood. Could there be a powerful ethical message here hinting to an ideal preference for a vegetarian diet? After all, in the Garden of Eden, eating animals was forbidden. If we were still in the Garden of Eden, we wouldn’t be eating meat at all. But the people lusted after meat and so after the Flood, after Noah, G-d compromised and allowed it. He gave humans permission to eat meat, but this was a concession, as if to say, kill if you must, but let it be animals, not other humans. With his convenant with the Israelites, G-d invites humanity to begin a new chapter in history. The Israelites, however, are not permitted to kill any and every life form for food. Some species must be protected, given their freedom, left unsubjected to human desires. There is a moral difference between eating an apple and eating meat. Eating meat is a result of having taken the life of one of G-d’s creatures and those who live by the dietary laws are instantly aware of such a dinstinction. Not everything in the universe was made for human consumption. Man is not the center of the universe, nor are we the measure of all things. The Torah, as mentioned before, lays out the framework for the original “you are what you eat.” Throughout our history, from the famous debates of Maimonides to modern times, commentators, rabbis, scholars, and many others have sought to find the reasons – medical, spiritual, biological, or otherwise – to ascribe meaning to why these limitations were given. Keeping kosher is one of our mitzvot and there is great meaning and value in making the choice to eat certain foods and to not eat others. But the short answer as to why we observe these laws is because the Torah says so. Period. The fact that the Torah does not specify any reason for these laws have some suggesting that kashrut falls into the category of “chukkim,” laws for which there is no reason. Parsha Shemini concludes its identification of kosher species with the following verse: “For I the Lord am your God: you shall sanctify yourselves and be holy, for I am holy. You shall not make yourselves impure through any swarming thing that moves upon the earth. For I the Lord am He who brought you up from the land of Egypt to be your G-d; you shall be holy, for I am holy.”

23 MAY 2016 TEMPLE BETH TORAH SHA'ARAY TZEDEK NISSAN / IYAR 5776 Article continued.....

So while the “how to” of keeping kosher is specific, the “why” was often not explained except to say: 1) It will make you more spiritual. The dietary laws constitute a way of sanctifying the act of eating. Eating is a matter of instinct, but humans can choose on moral or religious grounds what to eat or not to eat what’s available. Since the Torah divided food into acceptable and unacceptable categories, some religious philosophers believed consuming food of a higher spiritual nature would raise one up in the eyes of G-d. 2) G-d commanded us to do so in the Torah. This argument for keeping kosher is the most ambiguous. No rationale. No retort. No whining. Just do it. 3) It is for your own good-meaning medically for health and safety. No question that some of the dietary laws have some beneficial health effects but many do not. 4) It simply separates Jews from other religions. 5) It encourages vegetarianism. Kosher guidelines for slaughter are more expensive and time consuming than other methods and so following those guidelines might reduce meat consumption. 6) It helps keep our Jewish identity. Keeping kosher can allow us to feel a closer bond with those who for centuries followed the same practices. 7) But the most important reason for keeping kosher is that it teaches self control and discipline. If a person can be disciplined in what and when he eats it follows he can be disciplined in other areas of life as well. Waiting after eating meat before eating milk products and not eating certain animals or combinations of foods instills self-discipline. Kosher laws teach that we must not have everything our hearts desire. Imposing rules on what you can and cannot eat ingrains a kind of self control, requiring us to learn to control even our most basic primal instincts. Self control is essential for all humans. Kashrut is much more than a heksher or a mashgiach. It is important because of the connection between eating and our souls. Limiting what we eat for a holy purpose, for the sake of connecting to the mysterious aspects of life, for the sake of connecting to our ancestors, for the sake of connecting to other Jews are all valuable contributions to the “refinement of our soul.” To make the conscious choice not to eat the foods prohibited by the Torah, not to mix milk and meat, to keep a spiritual discipline around eating, is a connection to the ancient wisdom of our Torah and our people. Limiting what we eat especially in today’s world of gluttony, can bring much spiritual depth and reward. The call to “refine our souls” should inspire us to look deeper at this ancient practice. To limit some of our choices as a spiritual discipline is a start and we can grow from there.

24 MAY 2016 TEMPLE BETH TORAH SHA'ARAY TZEDEK NISSAN / IYAR 5776 D’var Torah-Shemini Sisterhood Shabbat - Janet Workman

In much of Shemini, the laws of kashrut are outlined, naming specific animals, birds and fish that can and can- not be eaten. But prior to this, on page 632, verse 10, we are told of Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu, who “each took his fire pan, put fire in it, and laid incense on it; and they offered before the Lord alien fire, which He had not enjoined upon them. And fire came forth from the Lord and consumed them; thus they died at the instance of the Lord. Then Moses said to Aaron, ‘This is what the Lord meant when he said: Through those near to me I show myself Holy and gain glory before all the people. And Aaron was silent.” This passage is perplexing to me. What did the sons do that was so terrible that it should warrant the punishment of death? There are many different viewpoints on this, including that the sons were drunk when they made their offering to G-d. Most intriguing to me is the note of Aaron’s silence. In the commentary on the bottom of page 634, it states the possibility of more power in silence than in any words. Why was Aaron silent and why is it noted in the Parsha? Sometimes, silence is what is needed. For example, someone who is sitting Shiva for a loved one may have many people crowded around them to offer condolences, but maybe the grieving person just needs to sit quietly and not engage in conversation. Sometimes, in the face of tragedy and grief, there really are no words. Another idea is in seeing Aaron in the role, not of High Priest, but of a parent. Ultimately, there are things our children do with which we have no control and nothing to say. Children, especially grown children, may make decisions that are beyond a parent’s ability to comprehend or influence. At some point, we parents have to ac- cept and understand that children must, and will, go their own way. Aaron’s grief may have rendered him silent, perplexed by his sons’ actions and G-ds punishment. It reminds me of a movie I recently saw in which a man’s son dies in a college campus shooting. The father is in such grief that he leaves his job and moves to a houseboat. Through finding music written by his son, he begins to heal. Only mid-way through the movie, do we realize that his son was the campus shooter, taking six lives. The father’s grief is double, as he tries to cope with, not just his son’s death, but his son’s actions. There is great power in silence. Some of you may have a parent who you say “When mom is yelling, you’re okay, but when she gets really quiet-look out- you’re in trouble.” We know the power of that silence! It takes a certain level of maturity to NOT fill every moment with speech and conversation. We all know people who talk incessantly and you never feel they are listening-just thinking of what they will say next! If we are con- stantly speaking, we may miss hearing that still, small voice inside us. When we respond to every insult, every perceived slight and injury, we don’t HEAR solutions. We don’t HEAR what we are really feeling. We don’t give ourselves a chance to truly see the situation and our role in it. You can even see this in the current political environment! Personal insults and attacks are being thrown back and forth. Perhaps if the candidates stopped and silenced these juvenile attacks, they could HEAR the real issues of our nation. There is dignity in silence. So in the face of tragedy, grief and despair, Aaron was silent. I hope we all can recognize the power and dignity of silence, and also recognize the need for silence that others may have. May we all appreciate our own silent times-for that is where and when we may think clearly and HEAR that still, small voice.

Shabbat Shalom!

The tree has always been a symbol of life and strength in the Jewish tradi- tion. The parts of the tree depend upon one another just as those in need in our community depend upon Temple Beth Torah Sha'aray Tzedek for help and support.

In the same manner, Temple Beth Torah Sha'aray Tzedek depends upon the generosity of our community to enable us to continue to provide that support. The Tree of Life is the perfect symbol to allow us to recognize the generous donors who, in turn, help us to continue providing necessary services to our community.

Consider honoring a friend or relative’s birthday, Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversary, etc. or using this as a memorial gift. By purchasing a leaf for the Tree of Life, you will not only be helping the Tree to grow, but you will also be helping TBTST to grow, now and in the future. There are gold, silver and bronze leaves available at a price of $180. If you are interested in supporting TBTST, please contact our office and we will gladly assist you. You can also email [email protected] or make your donation online at www.tbtst.org.

THERE IS MORE THAN ONE WAY TO GIVE TO TBTST

No congregation is immune to the economic environment and so appealing for donations is a way of life. At Temple Beth Torah Sha'aray Tzedek there are many different opportunities to give and a wide array of funds and channels. We know that many people want to be generous and, for some, that generosity is harder than for others. Some are thinking of how to include TBTST in their plans for the future and beyond.

We have prepared this table to provide some help for you in your planning. Of course, you will want to include your attorney and your financial advisor in the planning if it extends into the future.

Yahrzeit is a Yiddish word, which literally means “time of year” or memorial. Jews of Ashkenazi descent use this term. Sephardim call this commemoration nahala, in Ladino. This custom is widely observed and based on the Jewish tradition of commemorating the death of a relative. All the Yahrzeit rituals are deeply ingrained in the Jewish life. The common rituals that are performed in the honorable memory of the departed soul include reciting the Kaddish prayer and lighting a Yahrzeit candle. Yahrzeit also includes the action of donating charity in memory of a deceased loved one. Through the performance of the mitzvah of tzedakah in the name of the departed, the merit of the deed is shared with the soul of the late relative, as their memory is enhanced. PRAYERS FOR THE SICK If a relative or friend is suffering from an illness, perhaps you would like to recite a special prayer for the speedy recovery of the ailing person. Traditionally, the Hebrew name of the sick person and the Hebrew name of the sick person's mother are mentioned during the prayer. It would be helpful if you would provide us with this information when you make your request. Prayers for the recovery of the sick are customarily accompanied by a gift to a deserving charity. The merit of this kind deed arouses God's mercy and His powers of healing. Although any amount is deemed appropriate on such an occasion, a gift of CHAI - $18 - or multiples of 18 - is particularly fitting when pleading for a person's recovery from sickness. CHAI in Hebrew means life. The two Hebrew letters which constitute the word - CHET and YUD - have the numerical equivalents of eight and ten respectively, together yielding the sum of eighteen. For this reason it has become a custom to give charity in the amount of CHAI when praying for the well-being of a suffering person. Enclosed please find a contribution in the sum of $______Please make a Misheberach (Prayer for the recovery) for: Name (English)______(Hebrew)______Mother's Name (Hebrew)______31 MAY 2016 TEMPLE BETH TORAH SHA'ARAY TZEDEK NISSAN / IYAR 5776 Yahrzeits MAY NISSAN / IYAR 5776 NAME MAY NISSAN / IYAR 5776 NAME MAY NISSAN / IYAR 5776 NAME

Become an important part of TBTST's Social Action Committee’s Mazon Project

The WECARE community outreach program operates a food pantry that provides over 3,500 bags of groceries each year to our neighbors in need regardless of race, religion, age, gender or nationality. We could not accomplish this important mitzvah if not for the generous donations we re- ceive year round from caring individuals, organizations, schools, synagogues and businesses in our community. Thanks to United Way of Broward County, we are also able to distribute fresh produce to needy people through Project Lifeline. Donations are greatly needed and appreciated to keep our shelves stocked so we can help the many men, women and children needing our services throughout the year. Currently, WECARE provides enough free non-perishable food and fresh produce to prepare over 65,000 meals for our neighbors in need. WECARE also collects small toiletry items, provides free medical equipment loans including wheelchairs, walkers and canes, distributes hand- knitted items to nursing home residents, and collects eyeglasses and hearing aids that are sent to New Eyes for the Needy. Donations of toiletry items and medical equipment are very much appreciated. Facts about Hunger in Broward County According to Million Meals Committee, there are 19 active food pantries in Broward County inclusive of the Soref JCC WECARE Food Pantry, and 4 active food banks. The Broward Regional Health Planning Council, Inc., Food Security Survey Report notes that 44% of all students enrolled in Broward County elementary schools qualify for free and reduced lunches. 15% of 56,873 Broward children live in poverty. 32 MAY 2016 TEMPLE BETH TORAH SHA'ARAY TZEDEK NISSAN / IYAR 5776 Yahrzeit Donations DONOR IN MEMORY OF DONOR IN MEMORY OF
