ABSTRAK

Penelitian ini berjudul “Description of Moral Values in Shawn Mendes's Selected Songs”. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan nilai-nilai moral dan manfaat dari nilai moral tersebut dalam kehidupan yang digambarkan dalam lirik lagu Shawn Mendes. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah Metode Kualitatif. Sumber data penelitian ini adalah beberapa lagu pilihan dari Shawn Mendes. Teknik yang digunakan untuk menganalisis data yaitu dengan melakukan beberapa langkah, antara lain (1) membaca dan mendengarkan 5 lirik dari beberapa lagu pilihan Shawn Mendes, (2) memahami isi dari lirik lagu Shawn Mendes, dan (3) menganalisis nilai-nilai moral serta manfaat dari nilai moral tersebut dalam kehidupan yang digambarkan dalam lirik lagu Shawn Mendes. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa lirik lagu Shawn Mendes adalah lagu yang menarik untuk diteliti. Lagu Shawn Mendes ini menyangkut pengalaman kehidupan manusia yang di cerminkan melalui sosial, yang mengacu pada keberanian, percaya diri, cinta dan kasih sayang. Nilai moral yang bermanfaat dalam kehidupan manusia yang digambarkan dalam lirik lagu Shawn Mendes adalah nilai moral sosial.

ABSTRACT

This study entitled "A Description of Moral Values in Shawn Mendes's Selected Songs". This study aimed to describe the moral values and benefits of the moral values in the life depicted in the lyrics Shawn Mendes. The method used in this research is qualitative method. The data source of this research is a few of Shawn Mendes selected songs. The technique used to analyze the data by performing a few steps, among others, (1) read and listen to 5 lyrics Shawn Mendes selected songs, (2) understand the content of the lyrics Shawn Mendes, and (3) analyze the moral values and benefits of the moral values in the life depicted in the lyrics Shawn Mendes. The analysis showed that the Shawn Mendes song lyrics is a song that is interesting to study. Shawn Mendes song is concerned that in the experience of human life through the social mirror, which refers to the bravery, confident, love and affection. Moral values that are useful in human life is portrayed in the lyrics Shawn Mendes is the social moral values.

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Music is part of people’s life. Every people has listened music in their life.

Songs serves felling and express their common emotions. Singing appears to be a popular activity in many parts of the world. In Indonesian, western songs appear to gain popularity. This condition can be seen by the increasing chart number of western musicians in our country.

Every song’s lyric has message and suggestion for the listeners, whether good or bad. It depends on the kind of the music and on the listener. Lyrics are written as a form of the interaction between the writer and the listeners. In song can be cited as a media to transfer message, or expressions in order to achieve the pure feeling, joyful, aspirations, or ambitions.In addition, lyric is a part of literary element. Music and literary works are very useful since they have various values such as moral, religious, and sociological values. Literature is also one of media to show some of the meaning.

Ighile (2012) stated that Knowledge of musical concepts, it should be stressed, is not synonymous with verbalization and actualization. It means that music influence life.

As already be known, every song must have lyric. Lyric as quoted from the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyrics is “a set of the words that accompany music, either by speaking or singing”. The word of “lyric” derived from Greek

“Lyricos” meaning “singing to the lyres”, “the rhythm of the entire globe written out like poetry”. It contains the message that is used to express human feeling and experiences. It has imaginative quality and specific characteristic of language used in, such as denotation, connotation, figurative and symbol.

In order to instruct the second language, song can be utilized in different ways. It can be found out in one of the fragment of song lyrics by Shawn Mendes entitled “Youth”. The lyrics are;

Pain, but I won't let it turn into hate

No, I won't let it change me

You can't take my youth away

This soul of mine will never break

As long as I wake up today

You cant take my youth away

The fragment lyrics “Pain, but I won't let it turn into hate. No, I won't let it change me” show that there is a sense of moral value which reflects the belief.

The standars of belief are patient, struggle, and believe in ourself. Generally, every writer has plenty of imagination stated in the lyrics. The message contains many ideas, such as social, power, inspiration, motivation and education.

It means everyone shouldn't let pain turn into hate because hate is never the answer to anything. Don't let something effect you too much because you are going to regret it after. This is talking about one of moral value types, peace-

loving. In this power song Shawn tell us that they don’t want to let their lives be overshadowed by drama. While this song offers encouragement to victims of terrorist attacks at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, United Kingdom on 22nd

May, 2017.

As Robert Frost (1874:3) has stated that moral values are:The standards by which we define right and wrong. They can come from the self, family, community, religion, government, or any other entity that influences the thoughts of the individual.

The statement above explains that the sense of values are related to man’s belief of what is good or bad in the sense of moral behavior. Therefore, to decide which one is right or wrong is the man himself. On the other hand, moral values can be delivered well by using music because many people use song to express their feeling at the moment. It can give enjoyment, fun, and pleasure in teaching.

Based on this nature of the learner, music has been utilized in the teaching. There exists much of literature evidence showed that music can have a beneficial role in teaching.

In every song lyrics have a moral value that is interpreted by everyone who hears it. Moral values are the standards of good and bad, which govern an individual’s behavior and choices. Individual’s morals may derive from society and government, religion, or self. Also in every moral value in the song has significance in human life, that is teaching us to be more confident about yourself.

The value of music is a highly perceptual concept. It always depends on the context, such as when we encounter a song, our emotional status, the environment, the mood we’re in at that time or any major events we connect it to.

Music may represent the bad or good of human feeling; it is able to express their thoughts, experiences, emotions, and faith. Besides that, music also invites the hearer to come into the new world or new life, when they are listening tothe lyrics of the songs. The effects of the music are not only influencing the people’s emotion but it is also changing brain waves and make the brain more receptive in learning. In addition, music is a part of literary work.

In the music industry there are many solo singers. One of the solo singers is Shawn Mendes. He is a Canadian pop singer and songwriter. After uploading a series of his cover versions to various video-sharing sites (beginning with the now-defunct application Vine in 2012), Mendes earned a dedicated following that he cultivated through social media outlets. His talent, teen-idol good looks and built-in fan base quickly landed him a record deal. In 2014 his debut single, "Life of the Party,” charted at No. 24 on the Billboard 100, making the then 15-year-old

Mendes the youngest artist to have a debut song within the Top 25. Also, Shawn

Mendes has released three studio albums (Handwritten, Illuminate, and Shawn

Mendes Album), two live albums, two reissues, three extended plays, 20 music videos, fifteen singles (including one as a featured artist), and eight promotional singles. All of his studio albums debuted at number one in Canada and the United

States, with the first one making Mendes one of five artists ever to debut at number one before the age of 18 and the third one making him the third-youngest artist to achieve three number one albums.

In 2017, Mendes became the first artist to land three number-one singles on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart before turning 20 years old. In 2018, he became the first artist to achieve four number-one singles on the Adult Pop

Songs chart before the age of 20 as well. In 2019, he released the hit singles "If I

Can't Have You" and "Señorita", with the latter peaking at number one on the US

Billboard Hot 100.

In this paper, the writer interested in analyzing the moral values found in song lyrics. Because the songwriter expresses his ideas and feelings through the songs. Therefore, the writer takes the title of this study as “The Analysis of Moral

Values in Shawn Mendes's Selected Songs”.

1.2 The Problem of the Study

In analyzing Moral values in Shawn Mendes’s selected song lyrics, the problems will be centered into two questions.

The questions that are relevant to the problem are :

1) What are the moral values found in Shawn Mendes’s selected song lyrics ?

2) What are the significance of moral values in life portrayed in the lyrics ?

1.3 The Objective of the Study

The writer has some objectives in writing this study, they are as following:

1) To analysis the moral values in Shawn Mendes’s Selected Song lyrics.

2) To analysis the significance purpose of moral values in Shawn Mendes's

Selected Song lyrics.

1.4 Scope of the Study

The writer limits the study only in the moral values from Shawn Mendes's selected song lyrics. The moral values that are going to be discussed in this context are the standards that Shawn Mendes wants to share. These standards are covering the belief to judge what is right or wrong, good or bad, moral or immoral stated in the lyrics of the song. The writer chooses 5 hit songs from Shawn

Mendes albums, They are (1) “Youth", (2) "In My Blood", (3) "Treat You Better" and (4) "Life of the Party".

Because those selected songs contain several values which is the background and the reason why the writer chooses this study.

1.5 Significance of the Study

The writer hopes that the result of this research will be beneficial both theoretical and practical.

1) Theoretical

The writer expects the result of this study can be advantageous to the world of literature as complement to the study of song and contribute the development of moral values on lyric song Shawn Mendes.

2) Practical a. The writer expects that the study can build a good appreciation for the people towards the song lyrics.

b. The writer expects that the listener of Shawn Mendes songs can take the moral values in each song. c. The writer expects to defend good character in each people.

1.6 Method of the Study

The writer is using qualitative method by reading lyrics, listening to the songs, selecting words and sentences that have moral values, interpreting data and describing data before drawing conclusions.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF LITERATURE

2.1 Song Lyric

The song lyric is specifically intended for singing. This intention affects diction, content and stanza form. The song lyric is particularly unified and simple. A tune has its own emotional character, and it is words will need to be of words and music. Song lyric is the verbal symbol that created by human.

Song lyric usually written in a repeating stanza and designed to be set to music.

Often, there is no chronology of events in the lyrics, but rather objects, situations or the subject is written about in a lyric (Preminger, 1993: 8).

From the explanation above, it can be concluded that song lyric is symbolic reaction of humans. It is a response of everything that happened and felt by their physical environment and it is influenced by common sense and rationality.

Symbol is used by human to understand a reality cannot be seen directly, but it can be seen and felt by human senses. This stimulus is processed and created by mind. Then, the concept or the specific interpretation will be formed a specific meaning appropriate with what will be pronounced.

According to Risdianto (2011: 32) there are five element of poetry which to be a good poem, they are figure of speech, imagery, rhythm, rhyme, and tone.

1. Figure of Speech

Figurative language or figure of speech is a poet’s expression of his imagination. According to Perrine (1963: 54) figurative language is broadly defined as any way of saying something other than ordinary way. Figure of speech is a deviation from the usual form of expression or common way of thinking in an effort to obtain a more intense effect of disclosure. Figurative language consists

12 kinds, they are: simile, metaphor, personification, apostrophe, synecdoche, metonymy, symbol, allegory, paradox, hyperbola, understatement, irony

Risdianto,( 2011:33-36).

2. Imagery

Imagery is one of the literary elements that also important in the poetry. The clear explanation of imagery is in below: Imagery is a peculiarly effective way of evoking vivid experience, and since it may be used by the poet in such a way as to convey emotion and suggest ideas as well as to cause a mental reproduction of sensations, it is an invaluable resource of the poet (Perrine, 1963:48)

3. Rhythm

Rhythm refers to any wavelike recurrence of motion or sound. In speech it is the natural rise and fall of language. All language is to some degree rhythmical, for all language involves some kind of alternation between stressed and unstressed syllables (Perrine, 1963:162).

4. Rhyme

Risdianto (2011: 42-43) stated that rhyme is two words that sound alike, the vowel sound of two words is the same, but the initial consonant sound is different.

A rhyme is a repetition of similar sounds in two or more words, most often at the end of lines in poems or songs.

5. Tone

Tone may be defined as the writer or speaker attitude toward his subject, his audience, or himself. It is the emotional coloring or the emotional meaning, of the work, and is an extremely important part of the full meaning. A correct interpretation of his tone will be an important part of understanding his full meaning. In poetry tone is likewise important (Perrine, 1963:135). Tone also can be defined an abstraction the singer make from the detail of a poem language, the use of particular of words and sentences pattern, of imagery and figurative language

2.2 Definition of Moral Value

2.2.1 Moral

Moral refers to what is good or bad people’s relation to others. In other words, understanding the morality is good or bad and right or wrong. The morality refers to good or right in interpersonal or social situation. Social relationship can be judged by standards such as efficiency or produce. Moral issues involve a way of behaving and having character, they are unavoidably coming in all shapes and sizes. Fundamentally, moral issues arise when the choice

that people take will affect the good attitude of other by increasing or decreasing.

For example, when other people are watching news in program television about criminal, it is can be a source to be more careful and getting on the ball with criminal. The negative or decreasing attitude is when the other people make it to be the source of their criminal.

Moral comes from the Latin word mores, it has meaning of custom and folkways.

Moral behavior means behavior in conformity with the moral code of the social group. Moral development has both an intellectual and an impulsive aspect, people must learn what is right and wrong and must be given explanation of why this is right and wrong.

A morality according to Edward in the Encyclopedia of Philosophy, states that morality are: Beliefs about the nature of man, Beliefs about ideals, about with is good or desirable or worthy of pursuit for its own sake, Rules laying down what ought to be done and what ought not to be done and motive that incline us to choose the right or the wrong course. There are three kinds of motives which lead men to act morally, that is, to obey the moral rules of their society, enlightened self-interest, respect for rules, and other regarding motives.

Morals are the standards by which behaviors are evaluated for their morality their rightness or wrongness. Morality is something that must be owned by human because without morality human will not be respected by other people. They will be easy to socialize with people around them and will be accepted in the community. Someone who has moral should have the ability to consider good and bad behavior because no one can live without other person.

According to Carol K. Sigelman, the term “morals” implies anability: (1) to distinguish right from wrong, (2) to act on this distinction,and (3) to experiencepride when one does the right thing and guilt or shame when one does not. CarolK. Sigelman, also stated that there are three basic components of morality. They are:An affective or emotional component,a cognitive component,

A behavioral component.

An affective or emotional component contains the feelings of guilt concern for other feelings that surround right or wrong actions and that motivate thoughts and actions. A cognitive component focuses on the way we conceptualize right and wrong and make decisions about how to behave. A behavioral component reflects how we actually behave when for example we do or have something that we know is bad or wrong, or help a needy person.

2.2.2 Value

The theory of value begins with a subject matter. It is hard to specify in some general way exactly what counts, but it certainly includes what people are talking about. According to Ursery stated value is belief or attitude about what is good, right desirable, worthwhile and value system the ways people organize rank, prioritize, and make decision. Based on the people values provide the foundation from which the people make the personal and professional judgment and choices.

The writer concludes they are the people beliefs about what is important in life.

Some values refer to how one should act. Other values refer to what one wants to accomplish or obtain in life.

According Schroeder gives some distribution of value in daily life, he explains pleasure is good or bad; it would be good or bad if people did that. He gives another examples of value those are too much cholesterol is good or bad for health; it is better or worse for it to end now, than for us to get caught later. Value are guidance to act or behave which coming from ourselves, principles about to live a life and to make a decision. Values are moral and nature of behaviour which are decided for ourselves, involved the concept of universal truth, honesty, fair, justice and honor.

According to Earle, value is positive quality of anything whereby it is desirable, useful, interesting, good, and important. Only a few of the terms is available for the expression of positive values. Whether values are part of the intrinsic nature of things or simply a matter of how humans respond to things is controversial. It is clear that the values influence what people will determine as ethical; however, values are the measure of importance, whereas ethics represent judgments about right and wrong.

The writer can conclude, values is close relationship between importance and right and wrong is a powerful influence on behavior and how the people evaluate the behaviour of others.

2.2.3 Moral value

Moral values has been learned and taught since childhood. It is the first step to be a good person. Behavior is the way of behaving. Good behaviors is shown by how someone presented the politeness, for example speaks politely, dressed politely, and walks politely and etc. 13 Universitas Sumatera Utara

According Ursery moral values are the people beliefs about what is important in life. Some values refer to how one should act such as become honest, altruistic, self-discipline while other moral value to what one wants to accomplish or obtain in life. Moral values are quite or not specific about what should be done.

It is general beliefs or attitudes about something the people desire or like.

Bertens theory moral value is value that must be separated with other values.

Every value will get quality if it has relation with other values. Moral values are characterized they are Responsibility, Conscience, Obligation, Formality.

A. Responsibility

Moral values related to the human person who is responsible. A moral value only is realized in actions that are fully the responsibility of the person concerned.

Humans themselves become a source of moral values.

B. Conscience

Value always contains some sort of invitation or appeal. Moral value is that only raising the value of the voice of conscience that accused persons when underestimate or against moral values and praised us when realizing moral values.

C. Obligation

Moral values that are required for granted unconditionally. These values apply to humans as humans. Expected and even demanded that everyone uphold moral values and practice. Moral obligation does not come from the outside or institutions but is rooted in people's own humanity.

D. Formality

Moral value is not stand-alone without other value. Moral values did not separate with other values. Moral values are nothing without other values. It is form of formality. Max Scheler mentioned in Bertens that moral values “get a lift” to other values.

E. Religion

Religion also gives manycontribution in moral values development. Someone who has religion, they should control their act and attitude because in the Holy Qur’an, there are prohibitation, commands, and punishment. Many people appeals to

God’s Law the ultimate test of right and wrong. It can be understood that religion is a foundation of moral values.

2.2.4 Types of Moral Values

According to Webster (1981) there are 12 types of moral values, they are:

1. Bravery

Bravery comes from controlling fear. Bravery means ready to face danger, fear,

pain, or difficulty without giving in to fear. Bravery also means ready to

take risk. For example, be brave to stand up for righteousness or be

brave to take decisions in difficult situations (Webster: 1981 p.269).

2. Self-Confidence

Self-Confidence means believe in ourselves. In the other words, self-

confidence means confident with the power or ability of ourselves

Webster: 1981p.2059).

3. Enthusiasm

Enthusiasm is a strong feeling of joy or something that produces a strong

spirit. Enthusiastic is related to enthusiasm. Someone who is enthusiastic is

a person who tends to push himself completely to his interests or desires

(Webster: 1981 p.757).

4. Kind-Hearted

Kind-Hearted is the state of being kind. The word of kind-hearted means

having or showing the expression of sympathetic nature, helpful nature, or

good mood (Webster: 1981 p.1243).

5. Honesty

Honesty is a behavior that shows fairness, righteousness,

andstraightforwardness. Honesty is a respectable character and relates

with truthfulness and sincerity (Webster 1981p.1086).

6. Love and Affection

` Love is a strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal tries

(Webster: 1981 p.1340). Affection means a feeling about love, kindness,

and desire. Affection is a feeling of liking and loving for somebody or

something (Webster: 1981 p.134).

7. Loyalty

Loyalty is the quality, state, or instance of being loyal. Loyalty is someone's

behavior that is giving or showing firm and constant support to a person or

institution. Loyalty means faithful to commitments, rules, or customs

(Webster: 1981 p.1342).

8. Peace-Loving

Peace is harmony in personal relations. Peace means free from disquieting,

oppressive thoughts, or emotions. Someone who is peace-loving will make

the other people feel safe and happy with his presence (Webster: 1981

p.1660).

9. Perseverance

Perseverance is the action, condition, or instance of persevering. It is the

continued effort of an undertaking to achieve a certain purpose.

Perseverance means able and ready to drive forward (Webster: 1981

p.1685).

10. Sincerity

Sincerity is the quality or condition of being heartfelt, an expression of

3.4 The Significance of Moral Values in Life Portrayed in the Lyrics

Building confidence means taking small steps that leave a lasting sense of accomplishment. Self-confidence is understanding that you trust your own judgment and abilities, and that you value yourself and feel worthy, regardless of any imperfections or of what others may believe about you. You can show self- confidence in many ways: in your behavior, your body language, and in what you say and how you say it. And the only way to be truly confident is to simply become comfortable with what you lack.

4.1 Conclusion

After analyzing the moral values, it can be concluded that the lyrics of Shawn

Mendes's selected song are interesting. In this paper, it shown three types of moral value. They are bravery, self-confident, love and affection.

The singer described his feelings, thoughts, and experiences related to his life. So, the singer said that everyone lives dont need overshadowed by a bad thing, sharing love to another is a must, and we need to loving ourself first. All of it can change the human mind. So, people may have good soul. As a human,bravery is a state to show our strength to face danger with the use of mind and body. If there are no risks and adventures in one’s life, life becomes boring, and a feeling of fear remains forever. We just need to be brave, trust ourself, accept yourself as you are, and don’t do anything which hides your identity because it is a good thing to do.

In addition, his songs can describes the society’s behavior, which is good or bad.

Furthermore, moral value refers to what is good or bad. People may communicate to each other with the standard of morality. So, moral values give us a knowledge about how to be a person with good behaviors.

Shawn Peter Raul Mendes was born on August 8, 1998, in Toronto,

Canada to Karen and Manuel Mendes. He and his younger sister, Aaliyah, grew up in Pickering, Ontario, a Toronto suburb, where he went to Pine Ridge

Secondary School. Among his extracurricular activities, he played sports like soccer and ice hockey and also took acting classes. Though he left school in his junior year to go on tour, he kept up with his homework via online courses and was able to graduate with his class in June 2016.
