Mobility is achieved through Erasmus+ programme and school and strategic partnerships for school education. These partnerships aim at improving the understanding of the European social framework and the different school systems across Europe. In addi- tion, they foster the idea of European cooperation amongst schools within a framework that offers students opportunities to participate in a joint pro- ject and communicate with each other inside and outside the classroom. During the project, the participants meet every few months in one of the participating schools and exchange information on the progress made by each school. They also work together in small groups to perform certain tasks on the spot. These activities aim at joint initiatives, the exchange of know-how and good practices, the promotion of innovation, the recogni- tion and validation of skills, the enhancement of entrepreneurship and the encouragement of the active citizen. Each school participating in a partnership creates a pedagogical group, consisting of twenty students and two or three teachers. Eligible students should speak English at a satisfactory level and must accommodate a stu- dent from a partner country for one week. Students living in foreign part- ner countries will in turn host Greek students. A European study on the impact of partnerships among schools across countries shows that students - especially in secondary education - have greatly improved their skills. It is clear that school and strategic partnerships contribute to shaping the identity of the European citizen for participating students, an identity char- acterized by cooperative spirit, flexibility, autonomous thinking, judgment and action. It is also noteworthy that such European projects offer an outstanding opportunity to less fortunate students, affected either by the adverse so- cio-economic situation or by any type of discrimination, to feel equal to the rest of their classmates. By involving students in mobility programmes, the objective is to elim- inate inconsistencies and differences between the cultural, social and eco- 8 ERASMUS + nomic realities in Europe. In addition, the development of competences considered fundamental by the European Union is especially necessary for those who are socially marginalized and bear an additional weight of social stigma. Given the importance of school and strategic partnerships, the Region- al Directorate of Primary and Secondary Education of the Ionian Islands submitted a strategic partnership project in 2018, which was funded by the State Scholarship Foundation, the Greek national agency for the Erasmus+ programme. This handbook captures the results of the project and its usefulness for the participants, the school communities and the wider local communities. Olga Pachi Presentation of the project The educational project “The many - facet personality of Ioannis Kapodis- trias aims to provide teachers and students the opportunity to explore the life of Ioannis Kapodistrias, the first Governor of the modern Greek state. The timeline of this research starts from Capo d’ Istria (today Koper, in Slovenia), where his family originated from, continues with his childhood years in Corfu and ends with his assassination in Nafplio. The project involved five partner schools: a) Osnovna sola Koper of Slovenia, b) 1st Junior High School of Corfu, Greece, c) Scoala Gimna- ziala Nr. 195 of Bucharest, Romania d) Benediktinergymnasium Ettal of Germany, and e) 1st Junior High School of Nafplio, Greece, under the coordination of the Regional Directorate of Primary and Secondary Edu- cation of the Ionian Islands. The Regional Directorate supervises 362 schools of primary and secondary education, 4.224 teachers (2.132 of primary and 2.092 of sec- ondary education) and 30.065 pupils (16.829 of primary and 13.236 of secondary education). The Regional Directorate organizes and fulfills a lot of educational and cultural activities and various training actions, such as: seminars, lectures, training programmes, information meetings. For ex- ample, it has organized a training programme concerning the European Union, a training programme about the integration and reintegration of children of immigrants and returnees in the Secondary Education, in order to enhance their harmonious coexistence in the community, a training pro- gramme for the oral history and sustainable cities. Besides, the Regional Directorate in cooperation with the Ionian Univer- sity carried out a research project funded by the European Union. Through this project, the students of our region recreated past historical events in virtual reality. Moreover, the Regional Directorate accomplishes national and Europe- an programmes such as the Euroscola seminar. 10 ERASMUS + Osnovna sola Koper of Slovenia. Elementary School Koper is a public educational establishment, founded in 2006. Its basic activity is obligatory elementary education and planned, systematic and methodical mediation of knowledge, and universal, human and cultural values and other skills. There are about 967 pupils in the school, grouped into 9 grades and about 39 class sections and sections of after school care. There are also more than 146 workers employed in the school, among whom about 113 representing school teaching staff. The programme of nine-year elementary school is being carried out in Slovene language in the nationally mixed territory of Slovene Istria. The pupils, attending the school, come from Koper and its surroundings. The majority of students with a migrant background come from former Yugoslavian countries, but there are some Asian students and students from other countries, too. The school tries to organize and plan its educational programme by balancing class and outclass activities. The school offers to parents and their children the obligatory educational programme, expanded programme (planned educational programme in school camps and activities connected with pupils’ interests) and some extra sports and arts activities and after school care programme. The obligatory elementary education is the basic and the most important activity of the school, in order to create optimal conditions for the best personal and educational development of every single pupil. This is the most important goal supported by incessant encouragement of the school staff for its professional lifelong learning and joining different national and international development programmes – projects. By joining international activities and projects the school desires to open the door to different experiences and their exchanging and sharing. Becoming aware of others and the educational profession abroad in general mean getting to know themselves in its widest meaning. 1st Junior High School of Corfu, Greece. It is the oldest Junior high school in Corfu. It consists of about 230 students aged 12-15 years old and 31 teachers of many specialties. In regard to the ethnic profile of the students, a large number of them are immigrants coming mainly from Albania, as well as other countries of central and Eastern Europe. Many of the students come from families who face severe economic difficulties, or come from single-parent families (due to a large number of divorces). A great number of families work in the area of tourism seasonally, which causes them to be unemployed for a long period of the year. The school consists of 16 classrooms, used mainly as teaching classrooms (12 of them) two as foreign language classrooms and we also have a chemistry lab, fully THE MANY-FACET PERSONALITY OF IOANNIS KAPODISTRIAS 11 equipped with all the necessary objects to enable teachers and students to understand Physics and Chemistry better. Inside the main classrooms there are projectors and/or interactive whiteboards with internet access, enabling the teachers to use modern educational methods.
