3. Institutional report

The University American College Skopje (UACS) was established in 2005 as one of the few independent universities in the Republic of Macedonia. The University is an institution for higher education that combines the best of American and European educational experiences.

UACS offers American efficiency through carefully designed curricula, current professional literature and case studies from distinguished authors, as well as implementing the “American Way”.

We are a university where each student counts, where each student is taken seriously, and where faculty members know students by name. The close student attention is a

5 ______University American College Skopje Annual Report 2011 distinctive feature of UACS. Most importantly, emphasis is placed on both professionalism, and on a holistic educational approach to student development.

Our mission is to enhance the students’ ability to think creatively and critically, and to communicate effectively.

UACS is designed to provide the community with higher education, professional support to industry and government, and most notably, well-trained young individuals prepared to enter the workforce with professional and exceptional knowledge.

UACS employs the European model of continuous education. This includes an accelerated baccalaureate degree program as well as extended studies at the graduate level. The programs for undergraduate and graduate levels are designed to be completed in 3+2 years with the full option of transferring credits from other accredited institutions.

The University retains its autonomous private status while it is part of the Macedonian educational establishment as a fully recognized University by the Ministry for Education and Science of the Republic of Macedonia.

In order to achieve the mission goals of the University, the pillars of the university are the faculty. Our policy is based on the following pillars:

• Experienced professionals with academic degrees; • International faculty.

In order to maintain high levels of educational success, each member of the faculty is monitored and trained to conform to the needs of the department or school where they teach. During the course of year, various academic training programs were delivered in the University and other Universities abroad, which introduced to our junior and senior academic staff new teaching methods, assessment methods and professional development in the areas of communication and IT.

The University employs a formalized promotion and tenure review process involving classroom observation, post observation review and peer review.

4. Domestic and international accreditation

The University American College Skopje is fully accredited by the state Board of accreditation in the Republic of Macedonia, and approved to operate an institution for higher learning by the Ministry for Education in the Republic of Macedonia.

(Article 46 section 2, Law for higher education of Republic of Macedonia; Official Gazette of the Republic of Macedonia, No: 64/2000 and 49/2003).

The latest submission to the board for improvement, adaptation and validation to the academic programs has been approved and validated to provide the University with degree awarding programs in the field of the Legal and Administrative studies, Architecture & Design and Computers Science & Information Technology.

Besides the national accrediting body, the University is expanding its provision to meet the demand and needs of students that live in the USA. For this purpose we have completed the complex procedures that ultimately led to UACS becoming an institution that is fully accredited and validated by a national accrediting body in the USA i.e. the Accreditation Council of Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). Another international accreditation is the accreditation from the European Council for Business Education, which had accredited the School of Business Economics and Management. Now, students will have accredited diploma in the United States (accredited by ACBSP) and in the European Union (accredited by ECBE).

UACS has also received accreditation from the Turkey Higher Education Council (YÖK), which is the responsible institution of the Turkish Ministry of Education. The successful accreditation by YÖK results in a complete, formal recognition and accreditation of all study degree programs by the Turkish government.

5. Infrastructure and Technology, Library Resources

The University has invested heavily in technology, furniture and other supporting infrastructure to enable smooth operation in order to foster greater understanding and learning amongst all students.

The premises of UACS encompass more than 4,000 m2. As the student body enlarges, more facilities are allocated for their use and constant investment is needed to provide quality education for the student body. The University Library is constantly keeping track of the latest editions of educational literature, in order to provide the best quality textbooks for the students. The exclusive contract which was signed for right to purchase books from Pearson, Prentice Hall and their subsidiaries, has allowed students at UACS to purchase quality textbook at reasonable rates. And not only that, UACS students have access to more than 500.000 articles on-line via EBSCO – the online database of journal articles and papers.

Library Resources

The library is no ordinary administration of the university or technical service, it is a professional unit of the academic institution that serves teachers, students and staff and supports the process of learning and research. In the traditional sense, a library is defined as collection of books or a collection of useful material to use. With the development of technology, useful materials are available in electronic form, which develop databases and digital libraries. The database consists of an organized collection of data for one or more uses, and digital libraries containing collections organized in electronic form, available online or on compact disc (CD).

Currently the library of UACS has 1500 titles or 6500 books, with signature and placed on a shelf at pre-determined location. Some books are purchased from own funds and the rest are derived from exchange with other libraries, with special emphasis on the library of Macedonian Academy for Sciences and Art (MASA), which donated all translated titles from government project “project to translate 500 books”.

9 ______University American College Skopje Annual Report 2011

All publications have their own UDK number (Universal Decimal Classification), where through predetermined universal rules of words and numbers, the content of the books is explained. UDK is accepted, because the home library National University Library (NUL) in the country, using this classification, actually sets the rules of functioning of libraries in Macedonia.

Except these printed books, members of library have an access to one of the most used databases EBSCO.

Since 2008, the Library of UACS started with publishing. The first book which was issued is "Osnovi na Statistika" - Prof. Dr. Evica Delova Jolevska, and after that UACS library has continued with publishing of other books: “Makroekonomija" - Tome Nenovski, Ph.D., "Decentralizacija na vlasta vo Republika Makedonija" – Zoran Sapuric, Ph.D., "Kon Univerzitetite od Tretata Generacija” - Hans Vizema, Ph.D., "Zivotna sredina I odrzliv razvoj” - Zoran Sapuric, Ph.D., "Zbirka zadaci po statistika" - Prof. Dr. Evica Delova Jolevska, “Trgovsko Pravo” – Kimo Cavdar, Ph.D., "Megunarodna Bezbednost" - Stevo Pendarovski, Ph.D., "Borba protiv finansiranje na terorizmot vo svetot so osvrt na nekoi zemji vo Jugoistocna Evropa” - Mr. Vladimir Naumovski, "Republic of Macedonia and the World Economic Crisis" and "Macroeconomics - Basic Principles" extended edition - Professor Tome Nenovski, PhD, “Monetary-regime switch from exchange-rate to inflation targeting: with reference to developing economies” - Marjan Petreski, MSc. 46 ______University American College Skopje Annual Report 2011

It can be said that executive education is an increasingly efficient way for those at managerial positions in organizations to hone their expertise.

Executive education programs began booming in the early 1980s. Companies believed there was a direct correlation between more knowledgeable employees and their profit margin.

The role of executive education is shifting.

In the past, its focus was to provide managers with management knowledge and prepare them for impending promotion. It was also used by organizations as part of a reward and recognition program as well as a staff retention tool.

If you listen to the issues organizations around the world are facing, there are diverse matters that are best addressed with executive education that is client centered.

It is of vital importance that executive education is relevant to the issues that organizations today are confronted with, can be practically applied into the workplace and offer long lasting impact.

Custom-made programs for individual companies are a new addition to the professional education sector. UACS can develop curricula based on a company's individual needs, from leadership training to an economics crash course.

We believe problem solving courses boost emphasis creative thinking.

We believe that open discussion leads to new solutions and development of conceptual skills.
