Empire, Nation, and the Islamic World: Bosnian Muslim Reformists between the Habsburg and Ottoman Empires, 1901-1914 Harun Buljina Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2019 © 2019 Harun Buljina All rights reserved ABSTRACT Empire, Nation, and the Islamic World: Bosnian Muslim Reformists between the Habsburg and Ottoman Empires, 1901-1914 Harun Buljina This dissertation is a study of the early 20th-century Pan-Islamist reform movement in Bosnia-Herzegovina, tracing its origins and trans-imperial development with a focus on the years 1901-1914. Its central figure is the theologian and print entrepreneur Mehmed Džemaludin Čaušević (1870-1938), who returned to his Austro-Hungarian-occupied home province from extended studies in the Ottoman lands at the start of this period with an ambitious agenda of communal reform. Čaušević’s project centered on tying his native land and its Muslim inhabitants to the wider “Islamic World”—a novel geo-cultural construct he portrayed as a viable model for communal modernization. Over the subsequent decade, he and his followers founded a printing press, standardized the writing of Bosnian in a modified Arabic script, organized the country’s Ulema, and linked these initiatives together in a string of successful Arabic-script, Ulema-led, and theologically modernist print publications. By 1914, Čaušević’s supporters even brought him to a position of institutional power as Bosnia-Herzegovina’s Reis-ul-Ulema (A: raʾīs al-ʿulamāʾ), the country’s highest Islamic religious authority and a figure of regional influence between two empires. -

JOURNAL OF COMPARATIVE RESEARCH IN ANTHROPOLOGY AND SOCIOLOGY Copyright © The Author, 2020 Volume 11, Number 2, Winter 2020 ISSN 2068 – 0317 http://compaso.eu The production of the ‘New Romanian Cuisine’: Elite local taste and globalisation Adriana Sohodoleanu1 Abstract Under the attack of globalisation’s universalising force, food traditions become sites of cultural resistance (Poulain, 2017) in a recent worldwide phenomenon that saw the birth of a new type of restaurants gathered under the umbrella of a New Cuisine taxonomy. The interest in what such actors perceive as “roots” and “traditions”, their fear of alienation and their strong ethical and ecological awareness build an ethos that turns food production into a cultural phenomenon (Ferguson, 2004) and therefore into something good to think with (Levy-Strauss, 1963). The New Romanian restaurants position themselves as agents of change and nationalise the fine dining space according to their vision while setting up the local identity’s resistance to global forces and building a new meaning for Romanian restaurant food. I analysed the mechanisms that help instil or dilute ‘Romanian-ness’ and the motivations behind this process that claims to address a need expressed by the up-and- coming middle class. Keywords Identity, gastronomy, New Romanian Cuisine; Introduction This paper addresses a gap in the body of literature dedicated to the local food scene and it puts a new phenomenon such as the New Romanian Cuisine in a context. The pattern of government intervention is reconstructed not only in the face of famine, but also in relation to the system of food administration taken as a whole. The aim of this article is to highlight the political genius and commercial enterprise with which Dubrovnik managed to secure its demands for cereals through a privileged relationship with the Ottoman Empire, here defined as Ragusa’s ‘corn diplomacy’. Horseflies (Diptera: Tabanidae) of South - East Herzegovina (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Gaja 6, HR-31000 Osijek, Croatia, [email protected] Accepted: March 7th 2008 The article presents the horsefly fauna (Dipteral: Tabanidae) of the south- east Herzegovina region, Bosnia and Herzegovina. During the 1987-1990 and 2003–2005 periods we collected a total of 847 horseflies representing 27 species and classified in eight genera. The most common genus isTabanus represented with 12 species, followed by the genera Hybomitra – 6, Haematopota – 3 Chrysops – 2, and Atylotus, Dasyrhamphis, Philipomyia and Therioplectes with 1 species, respectively. The five most abundant species were Hybomitra muehlfeldi (34.36 %), Tabanus bromius (12.04 %), Chrysops viduatus 9.33 %, Hybomitra ciureai (8.85 %) and Philipomyia greaca (6.26 %), which account for 70.84 % of the total number of collected specimens. New species recorded for this region and the for the whole of the state of Bosnia and Hercegovina are: Tabanus eggeri, Tabanus darimonti and Tabanus shanonnellus. Rod Tabanus zastupljen je s 12 vrsta, Hybomitra sa šest, Haematopota s tri, Chrysops s dvije, te Atylotus, Dasyramphis, Philipomyia i Therioplectes s po jednom vrstom. -

Hungarian Chicken Paprigasch – Chicken Goulash
Werner’s Hungarian Chicken Goulash Serving for 4 to 6 1 whole chicken, cut-up: or 4- 6 chicken breasts with skin. 1 large or 2 medium onions, diced . 2 green or red bell peppers cut into strips, one of each works nice. 1 or 2 Hungarian pepper s (optional for more of a spicy hot tang) 1 or 2 tomatoes cut into wedges 4 to 6 potatoes, peeled and diced into large chuncks ½ glove of garlic, diced and crushed (optional) 2 tablespoons of Hungarian paprika, don’t use Spanish or American paprika. 2 level tablespoons of salt (or salt to taste) 1 level teaspoon of black pepper 1 tablespoon of caraway seeds (optional, the least important ingredient ) 1 or 2, 10-12 oz. can of chicken broth (optional , makes for a richer broth, most beneficial of the options) 1 8oz. can of tomato sauce (optional, use for a richer red, broth) 4 -6 tablespoons of vegetable oil ( before cholesterol, in the old days, Hungarians used bacon grease, Dad made it that way ) -In a large stewing pot, brown onions in vegetable oil or bacon fat, frequently stir up onions, be careful not to blacken or burn onions. When onions start to brown , reduce heat to very low, and stir in paprika. Keep stirring paprika with onions. The less you cook the paprika, the redder the sauce will be. The longer you cook t he paprika, caramelizing it, the more brownish the sauce will be. Your preference, but be careful not to burn onions and paprika. The Werner kids like the redder sauce. -
