  • Apple Label Discography
Apple Label Discography 100-800 series (Capitol numbering series) Apple Records was formed by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr in 1968. The Apple label was intended as a vehicle for the Beatles, their individual recordings and the talent they discovered. A great deal of what appeared on Apple was pretty self indulgent and experimental but they did discover a few good singers and groups. James Taylor recorded his first album on the label. Doris Troy recorded a good soul album and there are 2 albums by John Lewis and the Modern Jazz Quartet. The Beatlesque group Badfinger also issued several albums on the label, the best of which was “Straight Up”. Apple Records fell apart in management chaos in 1974 and 1975 and a bitter split between the Beatles over the management of the company. Once the lawyers got involved everybody was suing everybody else over the collapse. The parody of the Beatles rise and the disintegration of Apple is captured hilariously in the satire “All You Need Is Cash: the story of the Rutles”. The Apple label on side 1 is black with a picture of a green apple on it, black printing. The label on side 2 is a picture of ½ an apple. From November 1968 until early 1970 at the bottom of the label was “MFD. BY CAPITOL RECORDS, INC. A SUBSIDIARY OF CAPITOL INDUSTRIES INC. USA”. From Early 1970 to late 1974, at the bottom of the label is “MFD. BY APPLE RECORDS” From late 1974 through 1975, there was a notation under the “MFD.

  • Goodnight Vienna First Appearance in Trade Ads: November 23, 1974
Goodnight Vienna First appearance in trade ads: November 23, 1974 Label c74 Stereo SW-3417 Custom label with ring nebula. Factories: Los Angeles, Jacksonville, Winchester Sticker: Some Apple copies have a blue oval sticker on the shrink wrap promoting the inclusion of two singles. Cover: The front cover photograph was taken from a promotional still for the 1951 film, The Day the Earth Stood Still. That science-fiction classic featured the human-like Klaatu and his robot assistant, Gort. In that movie, “Klaatu barada nikto” is a phrase that is used to prevent Gort from destroying the planet in the event that harm befell Klaatu. The authors did not translate it. A sticker promoting the Goodnight Vienna album urged people to remember that phrase. The cityscape and moon behind Ringo were not part of the original movie still, and of course, artists added a star to Klaatu’s costume. Ringo and John Lennon put together a short promotional film for the album. In the clip, Ringo is dressed in his Klaatu costume, leading a parade. Capitol even bought a 23-foot-tall waving statue from a used-car dealership in Los Angeles. Shoring up the building’s support, they transported a large flying saucer to the top and put the statue onto it. By that time, Michael McCloskey had redesigned the statue’s face so that it resembled Ringo. They left the display up for approximately two months. Inner Sleeve: The inner sleeve shows song lyrics on one side and a montage of photographs on the other. Two of the pictures show Ringo wearing a Beatles “Decade” promotional T-shirt (from Capitol Records, 1974).The group shot at the bottom shows John wearing the “New York City” shirt that he made famous – with the ringed sleeves torn off.

AWARD FOR MUSICAL EXCELLENCE Ringo Starr By Parke Puterbaugh He set the standard for rock & roll drumming with his solid rhythmic underpinning and tasteful percussive musicaUty. THE BEATLES JOINED THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF Fame in 1988 as part of its stellar third class (which included Bob Dylan and the Beach Boys). With Ringo Starr receiving an Award for Musical Excellence this year, all four Beatles are now in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as individuals as well. This is fitting, as Starr’s mod est, affable persona belies a lifetime of musical achievement that pre dates, postdates, and, of course, includes his eight years as drummer with the most popular and influential group in the history of music. Starr’s main contribution was to devise a fundamental and endur ing approach to rock & roll drumming. From the start, Ringo’s style has combined a solid rhythmic underpinning with tasteful percus sive musicality. He is a song-serving drummer. As he told Britain’s Melody Maker in 1976, “Drumming’s simple. I’ve always believed the drummer is not there to interrupt the song.” ^ Ringo has long been noticed by musicians for his steady timekeeping, artful fills, and uncluttered style. Producer Don Was stated, “He is the lead ing and most musical drummer to influence generations of musi cians.” His style may seem uncomplicated, but it requires discipline, restraint, and an aesthetic sense about what to put in and leave out. Ringo assembled a drum set that, by virtue of the Beatles’ fathomless popularity, became preferred by rock drummers of the sixties and be yond.
