  • US Apple LP Releases
Apple by the Numbers U.S. album releases From the collection of Andre Gardner of NY, NY SWBO‐101 The Beatles The Beatles Released: 22 Nov. 1968 (nicknamed "The White Album") In stark contrast to the cover to Sgt. Pepper's LHCB, the cover to this two record set was plain white, with writing only on the spine and in the upper right hand corner of the back cover (indicating that the album was in stereo). This was the first Beatles US album release which was not available in mono. The mono mix, available in the UK, Australia, and several other countries, sounds quite different from the stereo mix. The album title was embossed on the front cover. Inserts included a poster and four glossy pictures (one of each Beatle). The pictures were smaller in size than those issued with the UK album. A tissue paper separator was placed between the pictures and the record. Finally, as in every EMI country, the albums were numbered. In the USA, approximately 3,200,000 copies of the album were numbered. These albums were numbered at the different Capitol factories, and there are differences in the precise nature of the stamping used on the covers. Allegedly, twelve copies with east‐coast covers were made that number "A 0000001". SI = 2 ST 3350 Wonderwall Music George Harrison Released: 03 Dec. 1968 issued with an insert bearing a large Apple on one side. • Beatles History – Part Three: 1970-2008
BEATLES HISTORY – PART THREE: 1970-2008 The Solo Careers In September 1969, John Lennon told his musical partners at a business meeting that he was leaving The Beatles. It was decided that the split was to be kept secret until the group had secured a profitable new contract with EMI Records. In early 1970, The Beatles’ staff prepared the release of Let It Be, which had been recorded in January 1969. As George Martin had lost interest in the production, American producer Phil Spector was asked to turn The Beatles’ rough recordings into a valuable album. Spec- tor’s involvement, however, caused further friction between the band members, because Paul McCartney felt that Spector was ruining his song “The Long and Winding Road” with a lavish arrangement featuring an orchestra and a choir. In addition, the release of Let It Be collided with the release date of Paul McCartney’s first solo album, McCartney, which was scheduled for 10 April, 1970. The conflicts within the band finally reached their climax when the other Beatles ignored McCartney’s wish of removing Spector’s orchestral arrangement from the recording of his song. Consequently, Paul McCartney decided to inform the public that The Beatles had disbanded. The promotional copies of McCartney’s first album contained an interview, in which he stated that he did not want to work with The Beatles anymore, because of personal and musical dis- agreements. The release date of McCartney is therefore regarded as the date The Beatles broke up, although they legally existed as a band until 1976, when their contracts finally expired.

  • Apple Label Discography
Apple Label Discography 100-800 series (Capitol numbering series) Apple Records was formed by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr in 1968. The Apple label was intended as a vehicle for the Beatles, their individual recordings and the talent they discovered. A great deal of what appeared on Apple was pretty self indulgent and experimental but they did discover a few good singers and groups. James Taylor recorded his first album on the label. Doris Troy recorded a good soul album and there are 2 albums by John Lewis and the Modern Jazz Quartet. The Beatlesque group Badfinger also issued several albums on the label, the best of which was “Straight Up”. Apple Records fell apart in management chaos in 1974 and 1975 and a bitter split between the Beatles over the management of the company. Once the lawyers got involved everybody was suing everybody else over the collapse. The parody of the Beatles rise and the disintegration of Apple is captured hilariously in the satire “All You Need Is Cash: the story of the Rutles”. The Apple label on side 1 is black with a picture of a green apple on it, black printing. The label on side 2 is a picture of ½ an apple. From November 1968 until early 1970 at the bottom of the label was “MFD. BY CAPITOL RECORDS, INC. A SUBSIDIARY OF CAPITOL INDUSTRIES INC. USA”. From Early 1970 to late 1974, at the bottom of the label is “MFD. BY APPLE RECORDS” From late 1974 through 1975, there was a notation under the “MFD.

  • Goodnight Vienna First Appearance in Trade Ads: November 23, 1974
Goodnight Vienna First appearance in trade ads: November 23, 1974 Label c74 Stereo SW-3417 Custom label with ring nebula. Factories: Los Angeles, Jacksonville, Winchester Sticker: Some Apple copies have a blue oval sticker on the shrink wrap promoting the inclusion of two singles. Cover: The front cover photograph was taken from a promotional still for the 1951 film, The Day the Earth Stood Still. That science-fiction classic featured the human-like Klaatu and his robot assistant, Gort. In that movie, “Klaatu barada nikto” is a phrase that is used to prevent Gort from destroying the planet in the event that harm befell Klaatu. The authors did not translate it. A sticker promoting the Goodnight Vienna album urged people to remember that phrase. The cityscape and moon behind Ringo were not part of the original movie still, and of course, artists added a star to Klaatu’s costume. Ringo and John Lennon put together a short promotional film for the album. In the clip, Ringo is dressed in his Klaatu costume, leading a parade. Capitol even bought a 23-foot-tall waving statue from a used-car dealership in Los Angeles. Shoring up the building’s support, they transported a large flying saucer to the top and put the statue onto it. By that time, Michael McCloskey had redesigned the statue’s face so that it resembled Ringo. They left the display up for approximately two months. Inner Sleeve: The inner sleeve shows song lyrics on one side and a montage of photographs on the other. Two of the pictures show Ringo wearing a Beatles “Decade” promotional T-shirt (from Capitol Records, 1974).The group shot at the bottom shows John wearing the “New York City” shirt that he made famous – with the ringed sleeves torn off.
