During the three days of conference, 15 research projects were presented in the plenary room, summarized in a poster format. 11 of these projects have been created by an outstanding group of “young researchers”. In an effort to focus on the important work of these young researchers, the public had the opportunity to vote for the three best projects. Three prizes were awarded for the top three projects created by young researchers.

7 Environmental footprint of the conference

The environmental footprint report was drawn up by Laurent Vandepaer, student of Sherbrooke University (Canada) and the Paul Sherrer institute (Switzerland). It is based on the information provided by participants via the questionnaires, interviews with conference speakers, the energy report from the Majestic congress centre and analysis of the various menus proposed during the breaks, buffets and closing dinner (origin of produce, proportion of meat in the menu, etc.).

8 Environmental footprint of the conference

The Petzl Foundation will compensate the 208 tons of CO2 emitted during the conference by supporting a non-profit organisation specialised in reforestation and access to renewable energies.

Transport A total of 1 087 354 kilometers was travelled by the participants coming 25 different countries. 91% of that distance was covered by plane, 5 % by car and motorbike, 2.5% by train and 1.5% by bus. Accommodation 200+ people were staying in the Chamonix area in hotel, B&B, and private houses. Food & drink 800+ servings of food were provided for lunches and closing dinner, and more than 1300 coffees and snacks portions were offered. Welcome pack 200+ welcome packs were distributed including: organic cotton t-shirt, brochures and magazines, plastic name tags, etc. Conference center 9 rooms were occupied using energy-saving light bulbs, presentations were displayed using a 11,000 lumens HD projector, ovens and coffee machines were used before lunchs and breaks. In three days approximately 3 m³ of waste was generated.

A satisfaction survey was emailed to participants and speakers. 59 people had replied by 10 September 2018, i.e. a response rate of 21%. The survey proposed a series of 8 closed questions, with the possibility of adding comments, and one open question. The survey confirms the quality of the content and good organization of this fourth edition. As well as the statistics and the many laudatory comments, several people identified areas of improvement and suggested developments for future editions.

Survey results: Scores from 1 to 5 are to be interpreted as follows: 1 not at all satisfied / 5 very satisfied

Question 1:

Comments > improvement points: “I would have liked to hear more about solutions/actions taken in regards to climate changes in our mountains.” “+ : la diversité des sujets (de la philosophie aux wc...) - : il manquait des aspects plus co-construction, festifs, collaboratifs, créa- tifs, rencontres ... Nous sommes restés beaucoup trop dans une conférences descendantes à l’ancienne.” “Next time round I’d love to see a wider representation from winter sports community (I felt both the speakers and audience came from quite a niche mountaineering background) and therefore it would be good to invite the regions tourist offices who often have someone responsible for “Eco tourism” or the sustainability engagement of their resort.” Question 2:

Closing text of the Sustainable Summits Conference 2018

Today, as we come together for this Sustainable Summits Conference, and France, along with its Swiss and ltalian partners, is initiating a new approach to have the Mont Blanc massif listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a great opportunity to begin an international dynamic towards the recognition of the environmental, cultural and social role of the world’s highest summits. Thanks to this conference, France is able to officially launch a call to establish international working group to achieve this recognition. Mountains and their biodiversity (of which Man constitutes only a small part) are on the front line of the current climate emergency and we must take action-today, together and both locally and worldwide.

Guiding principles of the Sustainable Summits Conference

The guiding principles recognize factors that have led to the successes of the Sustainable Summits series of conferences to date.

• 1. The conference will be hosted by an organization on a non-partisan basis and a not-for-profit basis.

• 2. A conference organizing committee will be supported and enabled by the host organization and include previous conference organizers or their delegates; the committee will be chaired by a representative of the host organization.

• 3. The organizing committee will have representatives from the AAC, NZAC, and the Petzl Foundation (which is a not for profit organization) and others as agreed by those parties.

• 4. Responsibility for finances and associated liabilities lies with the organizing committee of the conference; the host organization will choose its level of liability in support of the organizing committee.

• 5. The conference will be limited to 200 attendees although associated functions may have greater numbers.

• 6. The conference will involve participants from countries around the world and the organizers will work to enable suitable international presenters and attendees.

• 7. The conference will focus on core issues relating to sustaining natural mountain environments for the benefit of current and future generations, and practical solutions to those issues.

• 8. Conference organizers will work within the durable SSI website solution (available in early 2017) and social media tools available.

• 9. Funding will come from three sources: Attendee registration fees; underwriting by government, foundation, and corporate sources; and (where applicable) ‘booth’ fees paid by NGO and corporate organizations.

• 10. Organizers and attendees agree to freely share presentations, videos, photos, and other knowledge without limitation.

19 Appendix 2: Call for the mountaineers solidarity

Wednesday June 13, 5:30 pm: «In the mountains, solidarity has no borders» by Eric de Kermel (Bayard Group) and Fredi Meignan (Mountain Wilderness).

Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, 12 -14 juin 2018
