Can viable holograms be recorded using an ordinary diode laser pointer and a consumer digital camera? How much does it cost? What are the major difficulties? I set up an in-line holographic system and recorded both still images and movies using a $600 Fujifilm Finepix S602Z digital camera and a $10 laser pointer by Lazerpro. Reconstruction of the stills shows clearly that successful holograms can be created with a low-cost optical setup. The movies did not reconstruct, due to compression and very low image resolution. Garber 2 Theoretical Background What is a hologram? The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines a hologram as, “a three-dimensional image reproduced from a pattern of interference produced by a split coherent beam of radiation (as a laser).” Holograms can produce a three-dimensional image, but it is more helpful for our purposes to think of a hologram as a photograph that can be refocused at any depth. So while a photograph taken of two people standing far apart would have one in focus and one blurry, a hologram taken of the same scene could be reconstructed to bring either person into focus. -

Overview of Wildlife Photography The purpose of this thesis is to research the positive and negative effects photography has on animals. This includes how photographers have helped to raise awareness about endangered species, as well as how people have hurt animals by getting them too used to cameras and encroaching on their space to take photos. Photographers themselves have been a tremendous help towards the fight to protect animals. Many of them have made it their life's mission to capture photos of elusive animals who are on the verge of extinction. These people know how to properly interact with an animal; they leave them alone and stay as hidden as possible while photographing them so as to not cause the animals any distress. However, tourists, amateur photographers, and a small number of professional photographers can be extremely harmful to animals. When photographing animals, their habitats can become disturbed, they can become very frightened and put in harm's way, and can even hurt or kill photographers who make them feel threatened. -

Information capacity: a measure of potential image quality of a digital camera Frédéric Cao 1, Frédéric Guichard, Hervé Hornung DxO Labs, 3 rue Nationale, 92100 Boulogne Billancourt, FRANCE ABSTRACT The aim of the paper is to define an objective measurement for evaluating the performance of a digital camera. The challenge is to mix different flaws involving geometry (as distortion or lateral chromatic aberrations), light (as luminance and color shading), or statistical phenomena (as noise). We introduce the concept of information capacity that accounts for all the main defects than can be observed in digital images, and that can be due either to the optics or to the sensor. The information capacity describes the potential of the camera to produce good images. In particular, digital processing can correct some flaws (like distortion). Our definition of information takes possible correction into account and the fact that processing can neither retrieve lost information nor create some. This paper extends some of our previous work where the information capacity was only defined for RAW sensors. The concept is extended for cameras with optical defects as distortion, lateral and longitudinal chromatic aberration or lens shading. INTRODUCTION The evaluation of a digital camera is a key factor for customers, whether they are vendors or final customers. It relies on many different factors as the presence or not of some functionalities, ergonomic, price, or image quality. Each separate criterion is itself quite complex to evaluate, and depends on many different factors. The case of image quality is a good illustration of this topic. -

Passport Photograph Instructions by the Police
Passport photograph instructions 1 (7) Passport photograph instructions by the police These instructions describe the technical and quality requirements on passport photographs. The same instructions apply to all facial photographs used on the passports, identity cards and permits granted by the police. The instructions are based on EU legislation and international treaties. The photographer usually sends the passport photograph directly to the police electronically, and it is linked to the application with a photograph retrieval code assigned to the photograph. You can also use a paper photograph, if you submit your application at a police service point. The file extension can be either .jpg or .jpeg. • The maximum size of an electronically submitted photograph is 250 kilobytes. 1. Correct 2. Cyanotype Detailed Instructions Cyanotype Formula, Mixing and Exposing Instructions 1. Dissolve 40 g (approximately 2 tablespoons) Potassium Ferricyanide in 400 ml (1.7 cups) water to create STOCK SOLUTION A. Allow 24 hours for the powder to fully dissolve. 2. Dissolve 100 g (approximately .5 cup) Ferric Ammonium Citrate in 400 ml (1.7 cups) water to create if you have Chemistry Open Stock START HERE STOCK SOLUTION B. Allow 24 hours for the powder to fully dissolve. If using the Cyanotype Sensitizer Set, simply fill each bottle with water, shake and allow 24 hours for the powders to dissolve. 3. In subdued lighting, mix equal parts SOLUTION A and SOLUTION B to create the cyanotype sensitizer. Mix only the amount you immediately need, as the sensitizer is stable just 2-4 hours. if you have the Sensitizer Set START HERE 4. Coat paper or fabric with the sensitizer and allow to air dry in the dark. Paper may be double-coated for denser prints. Fabric may be coated or dipped in the sensitizer. Jacquard’s Cyanotype Fabric Sheets and Mural Fabrics are pre-treated with the sensitizer (as above) and come ready to expose. 5. Make exposures in sunlight (1-30 minutes, depending on conditions) or under a UV light source, placing ob- jects or a film negative on the coated surface to create an image. (Note: Over-exposure is almost always preferred to under-exposure.) The fabric will look bronze in color once fully exposed. 6. Process prints in a tray or bucket of cool water. Wash for at least 5 minutes, changing the water periodically, if you have until the water runs clear. -

Land management professionals (foresters, wildlife biologists, range managers, and land managers such as ranchers and forest land owners) often have need to evaluate their management activities. Photographic monitoring is a fast, simple, and effective way to determine if changes made to an area have been successful. Ground-based photo monitoring means using photographs taken at a specific site to monitor conditions or change. It may be divided into two systems: (1) comparison photos, whereby a photograph is used to compare a known condition with field conditions to estimate some parameter of the field condition; and (2) repeat photo- graphs, whereby several pictures are taken of the same tract of ground over time to detect change. Comparison systems deal with fuel loading, herbage utilization, and public reaction to scenery. Repeat photography is discussed in relation to land- scape, remote, and site-specific systems. Critical attributes of repeat photography are (1) maps to find the sampling location and of the photo monitoring layout; (2) documentation of the monitoring system to include purpose, camera and film, w e a t h e r, season, sampling technique, and equipment; and (3) precise replication of photographs. -

Initially the focus is on the acquisition of necessary technical skills in printing, film processing, and darkroom practices. Through projects, readings and critiques, students will continue working on critical issues in photography as well as on composition and content. Analog/digital hybrid practices will be explored. A working 35mm film camera with manual controls and a tripod are required. Course Objectives: -Develop an understanding of the technical basics of B&W analog photography -Gain knowledge about creating compelling black and white imagery -Develop the ability to process and print 35mm film -Further develop the ability to use photography to communicate an idea visually. -Enhance critical writing skills and visual literacy that allow for the evaluation of the content and aesthetics of a photograph -Develop an appreciation for the medium through the study of past and contemporary photographers. -Gain/strengthen research skills. Learning Methods: Formal demonstrations, hands on practice, readings, lectures, research projects, class discussions, photographic assignments in and out of class and critiques. Attendance Students are expected to attend all of their scheduled University classes and to satisfy all academic objectives as outlined by the instructor. The effect of absences upon grades is determined by the instructor, and the University reserves the right to deal at any time with individual cases of non-attendance.
