"Learn to succeed" - "Dysgu i lwyddo" Three groups of Year 9 girls from Hawarden High School have been engaged in a 12 week STEM Project, Go4Set, in conjunction with Airbus and the Engineering Development Trust (EDT). These industrial cadets who have worked with professional mentors from Airbus have responded superbly to the challenge and showed themselves to be outstanding ambassadors for the school and STEM education. A Celebration and Assessment Day took place at Airbus on Monday 8th July where all teams presented their project to judges and set up exhibition stalls in competition with other teams from across North Wales. Team ‘Thinking Eco’ (Jasmine, Natasha, Beth, Liv, Millie and Amelia) designed an eco-factory for producing sustainably sourced clothing aimed at tackling the damaging ‘fast fashion’ industry. Their extensive research, innovation and team work impressed the judges and they were awarded the top prize of Best Overall Project. ‘The Breakfast Club’ team (Harriette, Katie, Laura, Hannah, Grace and Sophie) and Team ‘R.E.M.’ (Lexi, Claudia, Molly, Jenny and Molly) were highly commended by judges for their hard work, attention to detail and outstanding presentations. On Friday 21st June, all pupils in Years 7-10 took part in our annual sports day. The day was a great success with pupils striving to achieve points for their form and house. Congratulations to Tŷ Gladstone who took the house shield from Tŷ Deiniol this year and were crowned the champions. In second place we had Tŷ Ledsham, followed by Tŷ Deiniol and finally Tŷ Glynne. A positive atmosphere and lots of happy faces. Year 10 Rounders Our fantastic Year 10 GCSE girls recently took part in an inter-schools rounders competition, placing 2nd overall. Some excellent skills were demonstrated and the girls had a great afternoon of sports. Football Congratulations to Bella who not only represents the Welsh U17’s football squad, but also recently won ‘manager’s player’ at Manchester United FC and has signed for their Under 23s next season. Bella has worked hard in all areas of her school life and we are proud that she has been an active member of a range of school sports teams in Year 7-11. North East Wales Athletics Some great results from our 4 teams that travelled to Wrexham on 18th June to represent the school in the North East Wales athletics competition. Junior girls placed 5th, middle girls 3rd, junior boys 2nd and the middle boys came 1st!!! Well done to all involved and congratulations to the boys who have gone on to the final held in Brecon!! Athletics Congratulations to Whitney Tucker who took the gold medal in the U15 girl’s discus at the National championships throwing a massive 23.70m. All three have been selected after beating athletes in Wrexham, Denbighshire and Flintshire!! Fencing Once again, Callum is taking medal after medal in the world of fencing! Travelling all over the country, Callum has recently picked up medals in Newham, Durham and Scotland! A very bright future ahead we believe! SCHOOL HEALTH RESEARCH NETWORK (SHRN) SUMMER EVENT 2019 (NORTH WALES) Year 9 pupils, Beth and Lilly, were chosen by Flintshire Healthy Schools representatives - Emma Mcintyre and Clare Sinnott to showcase their work at the Quay Hotel and Spa Deganwy along with a working group for Mold Alun School. First we formed a SHRN group consisting of 12 pupils from year 9 to year 11. We analysed the survey and sorted the results into pros and cons (what we needed to improve on and what we could praise everyone on). In our houses, we then designed posters and presentations on the cons we found so that we could use them as resources. We then attended a healthy schools convention where we met Emma Mcintyre who helped us to develop our resources. Emma was very impressed on how much work we had put in compared to the other schools; we were so far ahead and she wanted us to get involved more. We were then used as an example for other schools and presented our resources and our ideas to teachers and health coordinators. Flintshire County Healthy Schools were very impressed with the work by Lilly and Beth and chose them as lead practitioners to present their work to sixty Healthy Schools coordinators representing sixty schools from North Wales. The house system model devised by Lilly and Beth to educate their peers on health issues raised by the SHRN survey 2017 was presented as an example of good practice to be followed by other schools. After their ten minute presentation, Lilly and Beth were then available to answer questions from the floor on their model. The head of SHRN, Joan Lawrence, complimented the pupils via email: “It was really impressive with so much learning from everyone”. Beth says that she really enjoyed the experience. “It was a good challenge and a great experience. I really enjoyed learning about the importance of pupil’s health”. Lilly added that she had found the experience “fun and interesting to learn with other pupils and to compare our results with each other. I also enjoyed learning about the importance of our health and well-being”. Accelerated Reader This year has seen some fantastic engagement with our Accelerated Reader programme. While all pupils in Key Stage 3 take part in the programme, the pupils listed below deserve particular commendation for their committed determination, amazing results and sheer enthusiasm for reading and quizzing throughout the year. Extra special praise should be awarded to our incredible reading ‘millionaires’! We are so proud of you all. Remember to keep the reading adventure going over the summer holidays; the Accelerated Reader journey will continue in September. CERN is the centre for nuclear physics research based on the Swiss - French border and is the home of the largest particle accelerator in the world. They are at the forefront of particle physics research, trying to recreate the conditions during the Big Bang. The visit is a great opportunity for year 12 to discover where careers in physics and engineering can take them along with learning from the experts some of the content needed for year 13.
