Year 9 pupils, Beth and Lilly, were chosen by Flintshire Healthy Schools representatives - Emma Mcintyre and Clare Sinnott to showcase their work at the Quay Hotel and Spa Deganwy along with a working group for Mold Alun School.

First we formed a SHRN group consisting of 12 pupils from year 9 to year 11. We analysed the survey and sorted the results into pros and cons (what we needed to improve on and what we could praise everyone on). In our houses, we then designed posters and presentations on the cons we found so that we could use them as resources. We then attended a healthy schools convention where we met Emma Mcintyre who helped us to develop our resources. Emma was very impressed on how much work we had put in compared to the other schools; we were so far ahead and she wanted us to get involved more. We were then used as an example for other schools and presented our resources and our ideas to teachers and health coordinators.

Flintshire County Healthy Schools were very impressed with the work by Lilly and Beth and chose them as lead practitioners to present their work to sixty Healthy Schools coordinators representing sixty schools from North Wales. The house system model devised by Lilly and Beth to educate their peers on health issues raised by the SHRN survey 2017 was presented as an example of good practice to be followed by other schools. After their ten minute presentation, Lilly and Beth were then available to answer questions from the floor on their model.

The head of SHRN, Joan Lawrence, complimented the pupils via email: “It was really impressive with so much learning from everyone”.

Beth says that she really enjoyed the experience. “It was a good challenge and a great experience. I really enjoyed learning about the importance of pupil’s health”.

Lilly added that she had found the experience “fun and interesting to learn with other pupils and to compare our results with each other. I also enjoyed learning about the importance of our health and well-being”.

FORTHCOMING DATES FOR YOUR DIARY

Wednesday 17th July 2019 End of Year concert Friday 19th July 2019 School closes for pupils Thursday 15th August 2019 A Level results day Thursday 22nd August 2019 GCSE results day Wednesday 4th September 2019 School opens for pupils Year 12 visited CERN, Geneva for the 3rd year running this July. CERN is the centre for nuclear physics research based on the Swiss - French border and is the home of the largest particle accelerator in the world. They are at the forefront of particle physics research, trying to recreate the conditions during the Big Bang. The visit is a great opportunity for year 12 to discover where careers in physics and engineering can take them along with learning from the experts some of the content needed for year 13.

Our visit this year started with The Microcosm, which is CERN’s exhibition to explain what they do and how they do it. Students can simulate the process of the LHC, learning how the protons are taken from a hydrogen cylinder and accelerated to 99.9999% the speed of light!

As well as being at the forefront of particle physics, CERN has invented many other things that have made the modern world, from the World Wide Web to touch screens and students got the opportunity to visit where the first message was sent via the World Wide Web 30 years ago.

In the afternoon we had our guided tour and we were very lucky to go to one of the main particle detectors called CMS. Follow us We managed to go nearly 100m @HawardenScience underground to see CMS up close!

Year 9 Physics MAT Workshop

Fresh back from their trip to the particle physics laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland, Mr Lewis and Mr Wilson were inspiring the next group of physics students, running a particle physics workshop for some of the top Year 9 students at Hawarden, Ysgol Y Grango and St David’s High School.

During the day students, discovered what particle physics is and how it affects our daily life, using Lego to build protons, neutrons and electrons. They then combined these to make hydrogen and helium, which make up 99% of the matter in the universe. Students then had the chance to build their own particle detectors, called cloud chambers. These use an alcohol vapour to show the paths of ionising radiation given out by a thorium welding rod.

Finally in the afternoon, students used the photos they had been taking all day to create video outlining what they learnt. These are available on our YouTube channel - https://t.co/ChLfzSDLEe.

To round off the day, we used the dry ice we had to show some demonstrations - the reactivity of the carbon and what happens as it sublimes back to a gas.

A big thanks goes to KMS Hardrange Ltd, who stepped in at the 11th hour to cut out the aluminium discs needed for the cloud chambers, without these the workshop would not have happened. An element of the National Baccalaureate Qualification (NBQ) Year 10 students have been focusing on their Community Challenge. This meant students had to engage in a community activity for 10 hours. During w/c 24th June and w/c 1st July Year 10 students completed close to 2000 volunteering hours participating in 8 different activities. Many thanks to all charities and organisations that supported the activities and congratulations to the students on being excellent ambassadors of Hawarden High School in the local community.

Ground Works, Knowle Hill

During our community week we went to Knowle Hill, the nature reserve in Buckley. We did a range of activities that would help with the maintenance such as litter picking, tree thinning, stacking logs, bracken bashing and we cleared weeds near the ponds. It was a hard day due to the wet conditions but we learnt a number of different skills such as how to plan and use different equipment. (George 10GN1)

Sandycroft primary school For my community challenge I worked with pupils at Sandycroft Primary School with the aim to teach them basic Spanish. I choose to do this as I’m currently studying Spanish for my GCSE. During the year I taught a group of young children basic Spanish over a period of eleven weeks. I then worked with another group of children teaching them on how we are negatively affecting the environment by using plastic. During this challenge I’ve improved their reading, problem solving and communication skills. (Grace 10DE2)

Talacre

Our group decided we wanted to focus on conservation work and do our volunteering at Talacre working with ENI, Presthaven Beach Resort and Flintshire County Council. During this challenge our group planned to volunteer for 10 hours taking part in a range of activities that would benefit the local environment. We created action plans, looked at resources we needed and also assessed the risks we would come across during the activity. We worked in groups of 4-5 during the challenge. I learned and developed a range of skills during this challenge such as community engagement, problem solving, planning, preparation and team work skills. I really enjoyed doing this as it challenged me to do things out of my comfort zone. (Beth 10GD1) Clwyd Special Riding Centre

Our group went to the Clwyd Special Riding Centre on Tuesday 2nd July as part of our community challenge. We had to help out with maintenance work around the grounds such as weeding an old picnic area to make it useable again and also cutting back bushes that had overgrown. We then painted the fences and outdoor furniture that was in the picnic area in our painting suits. We were lucky that the weather was dry and not too warm. During the day I developed a range of skills such as communication, problem solving and team work. Overall it was a good day of volunteering knowing that we were helping a local charity that supports people with a range of disabilities.

The Dell

Our group worked in the Dell with Mr Chalk for a week. We planned to do lots of different jobs from replacing steps, building an eco-green house and general maintenance work. The work was hard but we enjoyed it as we learned new skills as how to use different equipment and plan a task from start to finish. Here are the new steps we built in the Dell. (Oliver 10GD1)

Enterprise Challenge Report

For our enterprise challenge we were addressed with the task of creating a product or idea to be sold at a festival or fair in groups of 6-7. Prior to starting this challenge we had to complete a skills audit, which allowed us to identify our current skills level and also identify which skills that we needed to improve during the challenges.

During this challenge we were tasked with designing a product, and creating business, financial and action plans to show our consideration of all aspects and the possible outcomes of the sale of our product.

The main task was to design and present a presentation about our product to Big Ideas Wales. Our group collectively designed a festival game based on the well-known film Bird Box, which included the completion of tasks whilst blindfolded. Our group chose Guide Dogs as our charity to receive our profit, which as a result will benefit those people who are unfortunate enough to be blind so the aim, drive and result of our game is all linked and actually beneficial. In my opinion, the entirety of this challenge benefited me greatly. I improved substantially on my oral communication, my time management and critical thinking as I was team leader. It gave me more confidence in expressing ideas whilst valuing others opinions, and improved my confidence interacting with business people. It also taught me the importance of completing work to the highest standards and ensuring it is completed on time. This will all benefit me greatly in the future as it taught me skills that are essential in life.

(Holly 10DE2)

During the community challenge week, representatives from HSBC bank came into school and worked with a group of Year 10 students. The students had a presentation on key banking terms and the rollercoaster of life events and what banking products they may need along that journey. The year 10s were then given time to plan small group activities to teach the Year 7s about the value of money.

Year 10 received With a growing cashless, contactless money some excellent environment, the Year 10s had to design tasks to allow feedback from the Year 7s to make sound financial decisions and the Year 7s. recognise the value of the money they already had. The activities delivered to the Year 7s included contactless Monopoly, What-if Scenarios, card sorts, quizzes and the Budget Game.

Year 7 MAT Drama Activity

On the 3rd July I was given the opportunity to take part in a MAT Drama workshop with pupils from St David’s High School. I was very excited when we arrived at Drama Studio 1 at 9.30am and were told that we were going to be doing a ‘play in a day’ with Mrs Jarvis. I couldn’t believe that in only a few hours we would be performing a play as a whole cast and by 3.00pm we had done just that! As a group of 30 we created a play from scratch based on resilience and the importance of having a growth mind-set. We were trying to show that although things might be difficult in your life or at school and you may not be able to do something, perseverance means that you can do anything you set your mind to do, it just takes practise. Amongst other things we got to use masks, music and spoke as a chorus. Once we had rehearsed all the scenes we had created, we put the whole thing together and the whole performance lasted 45 minutes. Thankfully nobody forgot their lines, everyone performed to the best of their ability and we worked as a team. I really enjoyed the workshop and hope we have the opportunity to do another drama workshop soon. By Sophie (7LD1) Three Year 10 pupils took part in Portfolio workshops at Theatr Clwyd.

Nia, Emily and Callum were nominated to participate in this event and following an application and selection process, all three successfully secured a place.

The workshops gave pupils the opportunity to explore and develop new techniques and also work alongside renowned artists and designers in the areas of ceramics, printmaking, sculpture and graffiti art.

An exhibition of the work was on display in the art gallery at Theatr Clwyd. Royal Society of Chemistry, Schools Analyst Competition

Year 12 students Kate, Mollie and Olivia represented the school at Bangor University in the Royal Society of Chemistry's Schools Analyst Competition. The competition was for students taking an AS level in chemistry. The students carried out a practical problem solving experiment in one of the teaching laboratories at the university.

Well done to team Quizzy Rascals! Winners of our Hawarden High Family Quiz held on 10th May @BroughtonWings Sports and Social Club. It was great to see so many pupils, parents, friends, staff and governors having fun and winning prizes.

Looking back over the past year (after all, that’s what historians do!), we have been amazed by the effort and dedication that pupils have shown both in and outside of the history classroom. They have been keen to engage and push themselves to get to grips with complex investigations and reflections. Thanks to all pupils for their hard work this year and we look forward to the new term!

In June, Year 7 historians made the (long and bumpy) trip to King Arthur’s Labyrinth in Corris and took part in a workshop about traditional Welsh legends and storytelling. One of the highlights of the trip was the underground boat, which passed through waterfalls and took us deep into the mountain where we listened to the legends of Arthur. It was an unforgettable experience and it is easy to see why it has been named as one of the best attractions in Wales! Behaviour was excellent and the school received praise both from staff members and the public – well done Year 7!

The department is also delighted to announce that we have been awarded the Prince’s Teaching Institute Award again this year. The award recognises quality and depth of the curriculum, subject knowledge, diversity of learning experiences and promotion of the subject. We certainly have a lot to celebrate and look forward to continuing to building on this success next year! We are delighted to announce that following a rigorous selection process the successful appointments for the Senior Student Leadership Team 2019/20 are Olivia (Head Girl) James (Head Boy) Amber (Deputy Head Girl) Henry (Deputy Head Boy) and Alex (Senior Prefect)
