BY BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL Waterfront News Writer A bill with the potential to create more jobs in the marine industry and drive boat sales revenue into the state is await- ing Florida Gov. Charlie Crist’s signature. Marine industry executives and organizations are opti- mistic about it becoming law. Crist, who’s voiced past sup- port, has until June 1 to approve the bill. If so, it then becomes effective on July 1. The boating provision is one of 34 measures in the Jobs for Florida Bill (CS/SB-1752). The marine portion keeps the sales and use tax at 6 percent but places a first-ever cap of $18,000 on boat buys — regardless of size and price tag. The Florida Brokers Association and the Marine Industries Association of South Florida label the legislation as “landmark.” “It’s a win-win-win,” said Jeff Erdmann, legislative committee chair for the Florida Yacht Brokers Association. “It will boost revenue for the state, boost sales and boost jobs and services for people who work on boats.” Photo Courtesy/OFFSHORE EVENTS Currently, an FYBA study shows 63.4 percent of the boats sold by Florida brokers and dealers did not pay any Open ocean racing sales tax, meaning the vessels were sold outside Florida The Third Annual Sunny Isles Beach Offshore Powerboat Challenge: This year’s event weekend takes place June 10-13 off Sunny Isles Beach. It was a bluefish, unexpected at the end of April but not surprising. In the distance, an outboard engine hummed. “Boat coming,” Don said. “If you have a fish on when they pass, lower your rod. If they ask how we’re doing, tell them we haven’t caught much.” The guys on the other boat waved as they passed. When they were out of sight Don repositioned the boat. “Big trout right here,” he said again and right there I caught a little trout.

BY BEN DOBBIN Associated Press Writer POINT BREEZE, N.Y. (AP) — An abandoned light- house toppled into Lake Ontario during a 1916 storm, closing out Point Breeze’s heyday as a tourist beacon that lured and steamboats, an upscale hotel and racetrack and trainloads of daytrippers fleeing the summer swelter. This spring, a 37-foot-tall replica was erected with painstaking devotion beside the harbor. Already, visions of an economic revival in an overlooked oasis in upstate New York are flickering on the horizon. “The amount of traffic you get with a lighthouse is phenomenal,” said Ben Jones, an Air Force reservist and history buff who lives near the riverside hamlet on the southern lake shore midway between Niagara Falls and Rochester. New lighthouses have been a rarity since World War I, and this is one of the first carbon copies. “It’s the first historic replica I know of that has ever been built on Lake Ontario, and it’s the first new light- house on Lake Ontario in more than 70 years,” said author Thomas Tag, a Chicago-based expert on lighthouse tech- nology. Most of America’s 700-plus lighthouses popped up between 1870 and 1915, a third of them along the Great Lakes. “Very few were built from 1915 to 1955 and virtually none after that,” Tag said. “Before World War I, the gov- ernment decided there were a lot of small lighthouses on port entries that just weren’t worth the effort to maintain.” They tended to fall down 10 to 15 years after being abandoned, he said.
