The BMW ORACLE Racing team has won the 33rd America’s Cup, dethroning Swiss holder Alinghi. The challenger’s spectacular trimaran “USA 17”, with its futuristic 68-metre wing sail, defeated the catamaran “Alinghi 5” in the waters off Valencia on the second day to record the decisive second win. The best-of-three match ended 2-0 in favour of the US crew of owner Larry Ellison. This Deed of Gift series saw the holder and challenger go head to head in a straight duel. “Congratulations to Larry Ellison and his whole crew!” said Ian Robertson, BMW AG Board Member for Sales and Marketing. “The goal we have all been workingtowards for over two and a half years has now been achieved. This has been a fantastic performance by the whole team. As Technology Partner, we have also made a successful contribution to winning the world’s most prestigious sporting trophy. We have positioned BMW as a competent partner in competitive sailing and have firmly established the transfer of technology in the America’s Cup. The leading French multihull design firm of Van Peteghem / Lauriot Prévost (VPLP) are working with BMW ORACLE Racing’s design team in developing its new mulithull boat for the America’s Cup Deed of Gift match, the team confirmed today. Firm principals Vincent Lauriot Prévost and Marc Van Peteghem are integrated with the BMW ORACLE Racing core design team for the project. VPLP are the lead designers in conjunction with the BMW ORACLE Racing team, led by design coordinator Mike Drummond. BMW ORACLE Racing’s Michel Kermarec heads up the performance prediction and appendage design. “We are enjoying working with and learning from the vast experience of VPLP in multihulls,” Drummond said. “The French multihull community, in general, are leaders in these yachts and we are benefiting greatly. When we first looked at a multihull in the event of a Deed of Gift challenge, we were impressed with the record of the Groupama series of racing multihulls. Franck Cammas and VPLP designed yachts have been breaking speed records and leading this field, so VPLP was the natural choice.” Vincent Lauriot Prévost affirmed, “We are delighted to have been chosen by BMW ORACLE Racing to design the new multihull for the 33rd America’s Cup. Wilson JILA and Department of Physics, University of Colorado, Boulder, Colorado 80309-0440, USA (Dated: February 7, 2010) We present a review of the physical phenomena that govern the motion of a sailing yacht. Motion is determined by force, and the forces on a sailing yacht depend on the interactions of the hull and keel of the yacht with the water and on the interactions of the sail or sails of the yacht with the air. We discuss these interactions from the perspective of fluid dynamics, governed ultimately by the Navier-Stokes equation, and show how forces such as lift and drag are achieved by the relative motion of a viscous fluid around a body. Additionally, we discuss phenomena that are exclusive to sailing yacht geometries. I. Charlie Crist’s signature. Marine industry executives and organizations are opti- mistic about it becoming law. Crist, who’s voiced past sup- port, has until June 1 to approve the bill. If so, it then becomes effective on July 1. The boating provision is one of 34 measures in the Jobs for Florida Bill (CS/SB-1752). The marine portion keeps the sales and use tax at 6 percent but places a first-ever cap of $18,000 on boat buys — regardless of size and price tag.
