“Covering” the Bluesman from a Distance
Introduction In many ways, my journey towards this thesis topic began with my brother’s music collection. Throughout my teens he would introduce me to a wide range of local and international acts, many of which were influenced by African-American blues artists. This influence is evident in both their construction of sound and the old songs that they rerecorded. From there I began tracing musical influences from song credits and interview excerpts—a path often travelled by musicians and fans alike—that would eventually lead me to an appreciation of blues music. The penultimate step towards this topic came in the form of my honours thesis—a creative project that involved rerecording several tracks from the catalogue of an early Australian country music artist, one of which was titled “Blue Mountain Blues”.1 From there I turned to blues music in Australia. Initially conceived as a history of “Australian blues”, it became apparent that this proposed sub-genre struggled to unify and explain the disparate musical styles contained therein. Although each artist was clearly addressing the musical characteristics and influences I had come to recognise as “blues music”, it all sounded different. In the meantime, I developed a keen interest in a fellow colleague’s thesis topic that addressed the role of “covers” within the Australian music industry (Giuffre, 2005). My epiphany—and catalyst for the current thesis topic—eventually presented itself while viewing a live performance from Peter Green Splinter Group. The concert was split into two courses: an acoustic entrée featuring several Robert Johnson “covers”; and, an electric main with side dishes of early Fleetwood Mac material—the band Green had help found many years ago.

A Conversation with Jolie Holland by Frank Goodman (Puremusic.com, 9/2004) Texan by birth, gypsy by nature, Jolie Holland is quietly carving a niche for herself in the musical landscape. She and Samantha Parton crossed paths some years back, a meeting that ultimately culminated in the forming of The Be Good Tanyas. She bugged out after the first record was done, but her co-write “The Littlest Birds” remains one of their most memorable and radio worthy songs. There were any number of old-timey artists and outfits percolating under the radar as Gillian Welch & David Rawlings and then the whole O Brother phenomenon unpredictably captured the ears of millions of people. Some of those artists like Jolie and the BGT also had a lot of Jazz and Blues influences in their sound, and less Bluegrass per se. But in both of these cases at least, it’s a more primitive and sound texture approach to the music that prevails, rather than the flashy or chops type approach that either jazz or bluegrass tends to incorporate. In the case of Jolie Holland’s music, there are some very good players in the mix who take a decidedly textural and ambient approach to the material, creating a very unique and appealing atmosphere. Dave Mihaly’s touches on the drums, percussion, and marimba, Enzo Garcia’s musical saw and banjo, and Bruce Miller’s tremoloed guitar lines interweave and coalesce with the sound of Jolie Holland spectrally. And well they might, since the artist seems to channel the singing and playing of another time herself.

A Conversation with Trish Klein and Frazey Ford of the Be Good Tanyas by Frank Goodman (Puremusic.com 2/2003) When I was a diehard folkie in the late 60s and early 70s, learning country blues and ragtime on guitar and old-timey on banjo and some fiddle, the rule and the rage was to emulate the classics and the masters as closely and authentically as possible. In some cases one would learn from the seminal artists, but I more often enjoyed learning from the best of the modern day interpreters. I learned some country blues from Ry Cooder and Stefan Grossman, banjo from Mike Seeger, ragtime from Eric Schoenberg, and a long list of others… For one thing, the records of the interpreters sounded a helluva lot better. I loved listening to the piano bounce of Blind Arthur Blake’s guitar playing from the 20s and to hear him rapping along with his rags, but those recordings would wear me out. The purist mindset and movement was alive and well back then, I didn’t hear many people making their own version of those styles. Sure, singer songwriters were writing blues songs with their own lyrics, but that’s something different. Anyhow, the purists don’t rule anymore, and I’m glad. Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, after near perfecting the bluegrass and Appalachian duo sound, completely reinvented themselves on their most recent record. (One of these days, we will get an interview with them, we’re patiently waiting.) Likewise, the Be Good Tanyas and many other cool combos have modernized, urbanized, and otherwise reinvented the old-timey sound.

America’s Instrument A Short History of the Banjo (Part One) Naomi Norquay I’m not sure why I bought a banjo when I was 18. It might have been all those Pete Seeger records I had listened to growing up. It might have been because there was one in the window of the local music store with the unbelievable price tag of fifty dollars. I couldn’t pass up that bargain! I bought the banjo and a forty dollar case with money from my first part-time job. The banjo was a bluegrass banjo - meaning it had a round, wooden resonating disc on the back, which made it loud to play and heavy to hold. I had not paid much attention to banjos at that point - I did not know that there were different kinds of banjos and different styles of playing - styles that were much older than the seemingly pervasive bluegrass style. I did not know that the banjo had its origins in Africa and that it began its North American life amongst enslaved Blacks on plantations in the American south and the Caribbean. I had assumed that like the fiddle and the guitar, its origins were European. When I did learn that it was considered to be “America’s instrument” (Lomax and Lomax, 1947; Gura and Bollman, 1999), I assumed its origins were amongst white “hillbillies,” like the ones portrayed in the television show, The Beverly Hillbillies. This assumption was held in place by various white cultural references. In my home growing up there was a well-worn copy of John and Alan Lomaxes’ Folk Song: USA (1947), from which I learned that the banjo was “America’s only original folk instrument” (p.114).
