The are set to be composed around 200 CE. Historically we don't know much about Patanjali. There is a view that the same Patanjali was the author of three treatises - the first one on grammar Patanjali Mahabhyasa ; the second on health Charaka Samhita; and the third the Patanjali yoga sutras.

However, most historians believe that it is not the same Patanjali who was the author of these three. The yoga sutras were the most translated text in medieval India; translated into nearly 30 Indian languages as well as Persian and Arabic.

Sutra refers to a literary Style. means thread. It means that there is a thread or train of thought and different aphorisms are like pearls on that necklace. Patanjali has 195 sutras in this thread of thought - divided into four chapters or ‘padas’.

It is because of this mnemonic or oral tradition that yoga has been passed on from to shishya or student to teacher; in an unbroken tradition for over 2 millennia.

In this way we have not lost any of Patanjali knowledge and wisdom. It is incredible that the knowledge has been passed on and today people across the world can practice yoga.

THE FULL CHAPTERS OF PATANJALI YOGA SUTRAS Samadhi Pada - Samadhi means ecstatic experiences from wisdom dawns. Patanjali describes the stages of samadhi. The chapter begins with the definition of yoga, and then goes into the modifications or patterns of consciousness Next the idea of Ishwara is introduced - as a special self beyond causation and time. with this idea yoga philosophy differs from philosophy. After this the possible obstacles in one's practice are explained as well as ways to overcome them.

Finally, Patanjali describes stages of samadhi.

Sadhana Pada – Sadhana means . In this chapter Patanjali begins with the causes of Affliction or suffering and ways to overcome them.

The second half of this chapter deals with Ashtanga system of Raja yoga. This is the most practical aspect in the yoga sutras; in terms of the practices. Here the understanding of Patanjali shines forth in the way he is able to clearly describe the stages of how a person evolves; From moral codes do a dissolution of sense of self.

Vibhuti Pada - Vibhuti means attainment - or powers. In this chapter Patanjali describes the various vibhutis (attainments) that a yogi can attain through his Sadhana. These include levitation, entering another’s body, becoming invisible, understanding the solar system and many more

Patanjali clearly states that these are distractions on the journey and a yogi should be careful not to identify or get attached to these

Kaivalya Pada - Kaivalya is the goal of yoga.

Patanjali describes how once Yogi has gone beyond the accumulated karmas, then they are getting closer to self-realization. Samadhi manifests into -megha samadhi and the gunas of nature are transcended.

Kaivalya is described as Pure Awareness standing in its own light - no more entangled with consciousness or nature. This is the goal of yoga. then nature involutes for the yogi who now is self-realized.
