Received: 28 October 2013; in revised form: 2 December 2013 / Accepted: 17 December 2013 / Published: 27 December 2013 Abstract: Several anthropological studies conducted in recent years among different Native American cultures have revealed a series of common features in ontological premises and cosmological frameworks. These features seem to be shared by most of the Native peoples in both North and South America. They include: a system of relationships between humans and non-human beings based on an ontology “of persons” as contrasted to the ontology “of things” typical of the Western attitude towards Nature; a structure of the cosmos made by superposed layers, which express the idea of a reality represented as comprising hidden dimensions and invisible domains; and the key role played by ecstatic practitioners in establishing relationships with and acquiring knowledge from these multiple dimensions of the universe. Here, the idea is suggested that these elements could be profitably utilized to interpret the meaning of Paleolithic cave art, not simply implying a series of typological likenesses, but suggesting the possibility of historic (pre-historic) links. It should be remembered that the main settlement of the Americas occurred in a period (from 30,000–20,000 years B.P.) which is contemporaneous with the creation of the masterworks in the caves of France and Spain. -

Skinner5, Inga Bergmann1, Adeline Le Cabec1, Stefano Benazzi6, Katerina Harvati7 & Philipp Gunz1 Fossil evidence points to an African origin of Homo sapiens from a group called either H. heidelbergensis or H. rhodesiensis. However, a the exact place and time of emergence of H. sapiens remain obscure because the fossil record is scarce and the chronological age of many key specimens remains uncertain. In particular, it is unclear whether the present day ‘modern’ morphology rapidly emerged approximately 200 thousand years ago (ka) among earlier representatives of H. sapiens1 or evolved gradually over the last 400 thousand years2. Here we report newly discovered human fossils from Jebel Irhoud, Morocco, and interpret the affinities of the hominins from this site with other archaic and recent human groups. We identified a mosaic of features including facial, mandibular and dental morphology that aligns the Jebel Irhoud material with early or recent anatomically modern humans and more primitive neurocranial and endocranial morphology. In combination with an age of 315 ± 34 thousand years (as determined by thermoluminescence dating)3, this evidence makes Jebel Irhoud the oldest and richest African Middle Stone Age hominin site that documents early stages of the H. sapiens clade in which key features of modern morphology were established. Furthermore, it shows that the evolutionary processes behind the emergence of H. sapiens involved the whole African continent. In 1960, mining operations in the Jebel Irhoud massif 55 km south- east of Safi, Morocco exposed a Palaeolithic site in the Pleistocene filling of a karstic network. -

Conard The Use of Ochre and Painting During the Upper Paleolithic of the Swabian Jura in the Context of the Development of Ochre Use in Africa and Europe https://doi.org/10.1515/opar-2018-0012 Received June 8, 2017; accepted December 13, 2017 Abstract: While the earliest evidence for ochre use is very sparse, the habitual use of ochre by hominins appeared about 140,000 years ago and accompanied them ever since. Here, we present an overview of archaeological sites in southwestern Germany, which yielded remains of ochre. We focus on the artifacts belonging exclusively to anatomically modern humans who were the inhabitants of the cave sites in the Swabian Jura during the Upper Paleolithic. The painted limestones from the Magdalenian layers of Hohle Fels Cave are a particular focus. We present these artifacts in detail and argue that they represent the beginning of a tradition of painting in Central Europe. These cells are a requirement for trichromatic vision and hence, a requirement for the perception of the color red. The capacity for trichromatic vision dates back about 35 million years, within our shared evolutionary lineage in the Catarrhini subdivision of the higher primates (Jacobs, 2013, 2015). Only the excavations in 1995 and 1996 defined to a certain extent the artifacts, which indicated by their morphology the Lower Paleolithic date of this site. Because of the impossibility to study for the time being the material from the excavations this work deals with the surface chance finds, which are typologically and even more morphologically distinctive and on the basis of which it is possible to indicate the exceptional early date and importance of this site. Excavations at Cathole Cave, Gower, Swansea

JONES and RICHARD MOURNE ABSTRACT The discovery of an engraving in Cathole Cave in 2010 led to a decision to grille the cave. In 2012 excava- tions took place in the cave ahead of the grilling. Two areas of the cave were excavated; Trench A demonstrating that the cave held a faunal occupation dating to MIS 3, at a time, or times, between 50,000 and 30,000 BP. Two flint blades of Upper Palaeolithic appearance were discovered along with a faunal assemblage from within the shallow deposits across the line of the grille. The work demonstrated that the earlier excavations in the cave by Col. E.R. Wood were extensive and at this point in the cave he excavated to bedrock. The standing section (Area B) which he left exposed further along the main cave passage was also cleaned, recorded and sampled. The deposits contain a faunal assemblage dominated by microfauna, but no cultural artefacts were found. The dating of key animal bones, the analysis of the microfauna and the sedimentological analysis have together enabled a picture to be developed of the changes in this section from the mid-Devensian to Late Glacial and Holocene. INTRODUCTION Cathole Cave is located in an inland dry valley, Green Cwm, Gower, Swansea, (NGR: SS 53764 90011; Figure 1). The cave lies in a fractured and weathered limestone cliff above the valley in which the Neolithic Severn Cotswold tomb of Parc le Breos Cwm is sited. -

The unique find, a multiple perforated cave bear femur diaphysis, from the Divje babe I cave (Slovenia), divided the opinions of experts, between those who advocate the explanation that the find is a musical instrument made by a Neanderthal, and those who deny it. Ever since the discovery, a debate has been running on the basis of this division, which could only be closed by similar new finds with comparable context, and defined relative and absolute chronology. Introduction Discoveries that shed light, directly or indirectly, on the spiritual life of Neanderthals always attract great attention from the professional and lay public. One such find was unearthed in 1995 in Mousterian level D-1 (layer 8a), as a result of long-lasting (1979–1999) excavations in the Palaeolithic cave site of Divje babe I (DB) in western Slovenia, conducted by the ZRC SAZU Institute of Archaeology from Ljubljana. -

No Middle Palaeolithic at King Arthur's Cave!

Jacobi ABSTRACT In a reassessment of the site published a decade ago, the suggestion was made that King Arthur's Cave had been visited by hunters during the Middle Palaeolithic (ApSimon, et al. 1992). The purpose of this note is to withdraw that suggestion; the sealing of artifacts below stalagmite on which it relied is shown to be doubtful and the faunal and archaeological evidence is against it. It is alternatively suggested that the putative Middle Palaeolithic artifacts are Late Upper Palaeolithic. A firm suggestion for the location of the critical context is made, with the implication that doubts about the original excavator’s account were unwarranted, and that potential exists for further investigation and recovery of speleothem samples for dating. INTRODUCTION King Arthur’s Cave, a well-known palaeontological and archaeological site, is located in the Wye Valley, in Herefordshire, about 21 km south-south-east of Hereford and 5 km north- east of Monmouth (NGR SU5458 1558). The topographic and geological aspects of the site are dealt with in the 1992 paper of ApSimon et al. and it is sufficient to note here that the cave lies at about 110 m above OD, roughly 90 m above the present valley floor, and that it is situated on the side of a short dry valley which ends in the steep cliffs and bluffs of the Wye Valley gorge. The suggestion of a Middle Palaeolithic presence at King Arthur’s Cave made in the 1992 paper relied on the account of the stratification of the cave given by the original excavator, the Rev.
