The Department of Philosophy at Colorado State University invites nominations and applications for the newly inaugurated Holmes Rolston III Endowed Chair in Environmental Ethics. Rank: Associate Professor. Required qualifications: Ph.D. in Philosophy; AOS in Environmental Ethics/Philosophy; strong record of research; national and international scholarly recognition and reputation; demonstrated excellence in teaching; demonstrated commitment to service; ability to work collegially with others. Preferred qualifications: AOC in Philosophy of Science, Science and Religion, or Philosophy of Technology; ability to advance the department’s commitment to diversity and multiculturalism through research, teaching, and outreach with relevant programs, goals, and activities. Teaching load currently is 4 courses per academic year (2 courses per semester). Effective starting date is August 2016. Salary is commensurate with qualifications. The Holmes Rolston III Endowed Chair in Environmental Ethics is the second endowed chair created in the College of Liberal Arts. Colorado State University has an enrollment of approximately 27,000 students, including 4,000 graduate students. It is a Carnegie I Research-Extensive University and is recognized as one of the premier institutions of higher education in the western United States. It is located in the city of Fort Collins, adjacent to the Rocky Mountains. Rocky Mountain National Park, the Arapaho-Roosevelt National Forest, and several wilderness areas are a short drive from the city. Adjacent to the university are the Colorado Division of Wildlife Research facilities and the U.S. Geological Survey Fort Collins Science Center. Colorado State University has strong programs in global sustainability (School of Global Environmental Sustainability), forestry, wildlife, fisheries, veterinary medicine, environmental education and conservation, and environmental policy. The Department of Philosophy offers a B.A. and an M.A. in philosophy and has historical strengths in applied ethics and comparative philosophy. This endowed chair is named in honor of Holmes Rolston III, now retired, who pioneered the teaching of environmental ethics at Colorado State University in the 1970’s. The successful candidate will join Philip Cafaro and Katie McShane in environmental ethics and Bernard Rollin in animal welfare and veterinary medical ethics, as well as a regular faculty of twelve and an affiliate faculty of twelve. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to serve on relevant Ph.D. committees throughout the university. Approximately 112 undergraduate students major and minor in Philosophy, and 21 Masters students are matriculated in the terminal M.A. degree program. The strengths of the graduate program include animal rights, bioethics, environmental ethics, and comparative philosophy, but students have written successful theses on a wide variety of philosophical topics. The Department of Philosophy is housed in the College of Liberal Arts, which enjoys among the largest college enrollments and faculty numbers at CSU.
