Press Release April 2013 Brooklyn Museum’s Annual Gala “The Brooklyn Artists Ball” and After-Party Celebrates Brooklyn’s Creative Community Museum to Honor Trustee Barbara Knowles Debs and Artists Vik Muniz, Wangechi Mutu, and Roxy Paine Table Environments by Brooklyn Artists to Provide Guests with Multisensory Dining Experience On Wednesday evening, April 24, 2013, the Brooklyn Museum will host its annual fundraising gala, the Brooklyn Artists Ball, celebrating Brooklyn’s creative community. This year’s event will commence at 6:30 p.m. with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres in the Martha A. and Robert S. Rubin Glass Pavilion. Following the cocktail reception, a seated dinner featuring cuisine by Food in Motion will take place in the Museum’s magnificent Beaux-Arts Court. Guests will dine at table environments created for the occasion by eighteen Brooklyn artists: Njideka Akunyili, Daniel Arsham, Jules de Balincourt, FAILE, Jennifer Catron and Paul Outlaw, Joey Frank, Jacob Hashimoto, Steven and William Ladd, Emily Noelle Lambert, Fernando Mastrangelo, Navin June Norling, José Parlá, Analia Segal, Alison Elizabeth Taylor, Max Toth, and Lan Tuazon. Each artist will transform a 40-foot-long table into a specially created work of art that will be on view for one night only. Immediately following the Ball at 9 p.m., the Museum will host an After-Party that includes dessert and dancing amid an installation created especially for the event by artist Luis Gispert and music by DJs Atlanta De Cadenet Taylor and Andrew Andrew. Vanity Projects, a new art gallery-cum- nail salon, will also be participating in the evening by creating nail designs for guests based on the table installations. -

ALLAN Mccollum Brief Career Summary Allan Mccollum
ALLAN McCOLLUM Brief career summary Allan McCollum was born in Los Angeles, California in 1944 and now lives and works in New York City. He has spent over thirty years exploring how objects achieve public and personal meaning in a world constituted in mass production, focusing most recently on collaborations with small community historical society museums in different parts of the world. His first solo exhibition was in 1970 in Southern California, where he was represented throughout the early 70s in Los Angeles by the Nicholas Wilder Gallery, until it’s closing in the late 70s, and subsequently by the Claire S. Copley Gallery, also in Los Angeles. After appearing in group exhibitions at the Pasadena Art Museum and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, his first New York showing was in an exhibition at the Sidney Janis Gallery, in 1972. He was included in the Whitney Museum of American Art Biennial Exhibition in 1975, and moved to New York later that same year. In 1978 He became known for his series Surrogate Paintings, which were shown in solo exhibitions in New York at Julian Pretto & Co., Artistspace, and 112 Workshop (subsequently known as White Columns), in 1979. In 1980, he was given his first solo exhibition in Europe, at the Yvon Lambert Gallery, in Paris, France, and in that same year began exhibiting his work at the Marian Goodman Gallery in New York, where he introduced his series Plaster Surrogates in a large solo exhibition in 1983. McCollum began showing his work with the Lisson Gallery in London, England, in 1985, where he has had a number of solo exhibitions since. -

Doyle Professor of English, Science, Technology and Society, and Information Science and Technology Nancy Locke Associate Professor of Art History Craig Zabel Associate Professor of Art History Head of the Department of Art History *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School. ii Abstract This dissertation examines the ways that five contemporary artists—Mark Dion (b. 1961), Fred Tomaselli (b. 1956), Walton Ford (b. 1960), Roxy Paine (b. 1966) and Cy Twombly (b. 1928)—have adopted the visual traditions and theoretical formulations of historical natural history to explore longstanding relationships between “nature” and “culture” and begin new dialogues about emerging paradigms, wherein plants, animals and fungi engage in ecologically-conscious dialogues. Using motifs such as curiosity cabinets and systems of taxonomy, these artists demonstrate a growing interest in the paradigms of natural history. For these practitioners natural history operates within the realm of history, memory and mythology, inspiring them to make works that examine a scientific paradigm long thought to be obsolete. This study, which itself takes on the form of a curiosity cabinet, identifies three points of consonance among these artists. -

Roxy Paine: Farewell Transmission 293 & 297 Tenth Avenue, New York May 2 – July 1, 2017 Opening Reception: Tuesday, May 2, 6 – 8 P.M. Paul Kasmin Gallery is pleased to announce Farewell Transmission, a two-venue exhibition of recent sculpture by Roxy Paine. The exhibition will be on view from May 2 to July 1, 2017, spanning the galleries at 293 and 297 Tenth Avenue. This is the artist’s first major New York solo exhibition in three years and the first of his sculpture at Paul Kasmin Gallery. Over the past 25 years, Paine’s sculptures ruminate upon the clash of the human and the natural worlds, and the warring of chaos and control that result from humanity’s attempts to manage the process. Fusing organic forms, such as trees, flowers, and fungi with man-made structures and materials among which include stainless steel, epoxy, and polymer, Paine invents, distorts, surprises and confounds our perception of the natural and inorganic and the real and artificial. Farewell Transmission presents two distinct series, Dioramas and Dendroids; each express the artist’s anxieties about the human impact on our habitat and the mechanized tools that seek to impose order and control, often to disordered and unpredictable ends. In his Dioramas, Paine adopts and adapts a format familiar within the natural history museum, but instead of employing human artifice to represent the natural world, Paine’s Dioramas use organic materials to represent quotidian environments where the fundamental states of the Homo Sapien can be observed. Rooted in the Greek language, diorama translates to “through that which is seen.” Paine’s Dioramas are a device through which one can examine our own habitat, culture and society. -

NEW YORK, NY.- Cynthia-Reeves announced the permanent installation of Jonathan Prince’s Vestigial Block at the new Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University. The monumentally sized sculpture is one of three currently on display as part of the museum’s Sculpture Garden, surrounding the Zaha Hadid designed museum in East Lansing. The Sculpture Garden also features works by Roxy Paine and Steve Miller. The bequeath represents a six figure gift from the donors Julie and Edward J. Minskoff, whose acclaimed collection of 20th and 21st century art includes works by Jeff Koons, Jackson Pollack, Roy Lichtenstein and Willem de Kooning. Mr. Minskoff is the President and founder of Edward J. Minskoff Equities, a New York-based real estate acquisition and development company headquartered at 1325 Avenue of the Americas in New York City. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden Press preview: Monday, April 2727,, 10 a.m.a.m.––––noonnoon Conceptual artist Roxy Paine (American, b. 1966) has created a site-specific installation for the 2009 season of The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden, the most dramatic outdoor space for sculpture in New York City. Roxy Paine on the Roof: Maelstrom features a 130-foot-long by 45-foot-wide stainless-steel sculpture, Maelstrom (2009), that encompasses the nearly 8,000-square-foot Roof Garden, and is the largest sculpture to have been installed on the roof of the Metropolitan. Set against, and in dialogue with, the greensward of Central Park and its architectural backdrop, this swirling entanglement of stainless- steel pipe showcases the work of an artist keenly interested in the interplay between the natural world and the built environment, as well as the human desire for order amid nature’s inherently chaotic processes. The exhibition is made possible by Bloomberg. Additional support is provided by Cynthia Hazen Polsky and Leon B. Polsky. The exhibition is also made possible in part by Jill and Peter Kraus. FIRST IN-DEPTH EXHIBITION EXPLORING DIGITAL FABRICATION IN CONTEMPORARY ART, ARCHITECTURE, AND DESIGN OPENS THIS OCTOBER Out Of Hand: Materializing The Postdigital Features Interactive Installations And Digitally Fabricated Works Of Art By Ron Arad, Barry X Ball, Chuck Close, Zaha Hadid, Anish Kapoor, Maya Lin, Marc Newson, Roxy Paine, Frank Stella, And Hiroshi Sugimoto, Among Many Others New York, NY (October 15, 2013)—Exploring the latest trends in digital fabrication, Out of Hand: Materializing the Postdigital at the Museum of Arts and Design is the first in- depth survey dedicated to exploring the impact of computer-assisted methods of production on contemporary art, architecture, and design. Opening in October, this landmark exhibition brings together more than 120 works of sculpture, jewelry, fashion, and furniture by 85 artists, architects, and designers from 20 countries to examine how new technologies are pushing the boundaries of artistic expression and creation. The cutting-edge works highlighted in the exhibition demonstrate the reciprocal relationship between art and technological innovation as well as materials and new techniques—an area of exploration that has long been at the core of MAD’s mission and curatorial program. To mark the launch of MAD’s new holiday hours, visitors are invited for a sneak peek of the exhibition on Columbus Day, October 14.
