    ALLAN McCOLLUM Brief career summary Allan McCollum was born in Los Angeles, California in 1944 and now lives and works in New York City. He has spent over thirty years exploring how objects achieve public and personal meaning in a world constituted in mass production, focusing most recently on collaborations with small community historical society museums in different parts of the world. His first solo exhibition was in 1970 in Southern California, where he was represented throughout the early 70s in Los Angeles by the Nicholas Wilder Gallery, until it’s closing in the late 70s, and subsequently by the Claire S. Copley Gallery, also in Los Angeles. After appearing in group exhibitions at the Pasadena Art Museum and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, his first New York showing was in an exhibition at the Sidney Janis Gallery, in 1972. He was included in the Whitney Museum of American Art Biennial Exhibition in 1975, and moved to New York later that same year. In 1978 He became known for his series Surrogate Paintings, which were shown in solo exhibitions in New York at Julian Pretto & Co., Artistspace, and 112 Workshop (subsequently known as White Columns), in 1979. In 1980, he was given his first solo exhibition in Europe, at the Yvon Lambert Gallery, in Paris, France, and in that same year began exhibiting his work at the Marian Goodman Gallery in New York, where he introduced his series Plaster Surrogates in a large solo exhibition in 1983. McCollum began showing his work with the Lisson Gallery in London, England, in 1985, where he has had a number of solo exhibitions since.

Using motifs such as curiosity cabinets and systems of taxonomy, these artists demonstrate a growing interest in the paradigms of natural history. For these practitioners natural history operates within the realm of history, memory and mythology, inspiring them to make works that examine a scientific paradigm long thought to be obsolete. This study, which itself takes on the form of a curiosity cabinet, identifies three points of consonance among these artists.

    Roxy Paine: Farewell Transmission 293 & 297 Tenth Avenue, New York May 2 – July 1, 2017 Opening Reception: Tuesday, May 2, 6 – 8 P.M. Paul Kasmin Gallery is pleased to announce Farewell Transmission, a two-venue exhibition of recent sculpture by Roxy Paine. The exhibition will be on view from May 2 to July 1, 2017, spanning the galleries at 293 and 297 Tenth Avenue. This is the artist’s first major New York solo exhibition in three years and the first of his sculpture at Paul Kasmin Gallery. Over the past 25 years, Paine’s sculptures ruminate upon the clash of the human and the natural worlds, and the warring of chaos and control that result from humanity’s attempts to manage the process. Fusing organic forms, such as trees, flowers, and fungi with man-made structures and materials among which include stainless steel, epoxy, and polymer, Paine invents, distorts, surprises and confounds our perception of the natural and inorganic and the real and artificial. Farewell Transmission presents two distinct series, Dioramas and Dendroids; each express the artist’s anxieties about the human impact on our habitat and the mechanized tools that seek to impose order and control, often to disordered and unpredictable ends. In his Dioramas, Paine adopts and adapts a format familiar within the natural history museum, but instead of employing human artifice to represent the natural world, Paine’s Dioramas use organic materials to represent quotidian environments where the fundamental states of the Homo Sapien can be observed. Rooted in the Greek language, diorama translates to “through that which is seen.” Paine’s Dioramas are a device through which one can examine our own habitat, culture and society.

Gerald Cantor Roof Garden, the most dramatic outdoor space for sculpture in New York City. Roxy Paine on the Roof: Maelstrom features a 130-foot-long by 45-foot-wide stainless-steel sculpture, Maelstrom (2009), that encompasses the nearly 8,000-square-foot Roof Garden, and is the largest sculpture to have been installed on the roof of the Metropolitan. Opening in October, this landmark exhibition brings together more than 120 works of sculpture, jewelry, fashion, and furniture by 85 artists, architects, and designers from 20 countries to examine how new technologies are pushing the boundaries of artistic expression and creation.     May 20, 2008 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Caroline Park Galerie Jablonka +49 30 212 368 90 [email protected] New York Artist Roxy Paine Exhibits Inversion at Art Basel 39, Public Art Projects, June 4 - June 8 Basel, Switzerland: Galerie Jablonka is pleased to announce the inclusion of internationally renowned artist Roxy Paine’s ambitious sculpture, Inversion, 2008, in the Art Basel 39 Public Art Projects on the Messeplatz, June 4 – 8, 2008. Inversion is the first stainless-steel sculpture the artist has created in which a tree-like form is upside down, balancing on all of its limbs. The 12.8 meter tall hand-constructed stainless steel sculpture is created out of more than 7,000 metal plate, pipe, and rod elements. The complex fabrication process is critical to Paine, whose work follows the industrial principle of bringing together a standard system of parts to create a whole. Additionally, the stainless steel sculptures Paine has produced since 1999 are a product of the artist’s detailed study of countless tree species and his understanding of the rules and codes that determine the language of these forms. Through his botanical works, his art-making machines, and his large-scale stainless steel sculptures, Paine explores the collision between the man-made world that we can control and nature’s world that we cannot. He suggests that out of chaos comes possibility. Co nversation between Roxy Paine and Allan McCollum In 1995, when Roxy Paine began to follow a preoccupation with intoxication and decay into the world of plants and fungi, he did not begin reproducing a series of individual poppies or mushrooms, one by one, in the fashion of a trompe l‘oeil sculptor. Instead, he designed a production system that generated them. He made dozens upon dozens of unique molds that could be used to cast and stamp out a large vocabulary of similar but varying plant parts and mushroom caps that all bore close family resemblances, but were never replicas of one another. He designed systems to produce lifelike stems and scores of different sized leaves, and figured out a variety of airbrush and painting techniques for mottling and coloration. He invented and organized assembly line routines and combina- torial programs that mixed and matched this growing storehouse of parts into highly real- istic plants and fungi. And he did this in a way that reproduced not simply the look of real botanical specimens, but also the passive, monotonous, and codified manner in which vegetation repeats itself and multiplies. He accomplished not only an imitation of the way nature looks, but also, in a phrase often used by John Cage, an "imitation of nature in her manner of operation." Paine’s interest in the nature of an artist’s functioning doesn’t stop at this flirtation with the idea of making a machine of himself—he also has done the opposite.
