I started preparing for my thesis project in the autumn semester of 2011. First with only some really vague ideas, that slowly turned into a project sketch. Now it is May 2013, and very much on overtime, I am about to finish. There is a lot of lonely work when you write your thesis, all the hours spent in front of the computer, typing, trying not to spill coffee on the keyboard, underlining words , writing notes, trying to get a grip of what these 2000year old sources wants to tell me. Being part of the Religious Roots of Europe cycle two has been an adventure. The interaction between students and teachers, all the good times in the compact seminars, coffees and exam paper discussions in the libraries and coffee shops, long walks in Rome. My thanks go first to my supervisor Einar Thomassen, who helped and guided us RREs in Bergen since the autumn of 2010, and helped me shape the first ideas for my master thesis project. He has been a great help with structuring my ideas and with suggesting secondary sources, and has been a critical commentator on my work. I had the possibility to spend two of my master semesters in Copenhagen, and here I would like to thank especially Troels Engberg-Pedersen and Martin Ehrensvard for welcoming me to Copenhagen and the Copenhagen RRE group, inviting me to join the Copenhagen thesis colloquiums and helping me with practical issues. Troels has been my co-supervisor for my thesis project and taught me loads about analyzing and interpreting biblical source material. Being an RRE student means that you have most of your class abroad, but you also have the people at your own university. Marjolein and Ingrid, your were great RRE buddies.     7 CHARISMATIC LEADERSHIP IN THE CHURCH: WHAT THE APOSTLE PAUL HAS TO SAY TO MAX WEBER ROB MUTHIAH Abstract: In the fall of my freshman year at a Christian liberal arts college, I was sitting in the Student Union with a dorm mate, Doug, talking about matters of faith. As we talked, Doug asked me if I was charismatic. I paused, and then hesitantly said that maybe I was a little bit. Only later did I come to realize that we had been talking about two very different concepts. Doug was asking if I did things like speak in tongues and raise my hands in the air during worship services. I was completely unfamiliar with that meaning of the word, and I thought he was referring to a leadership or personality trait. These are two unrelated understandings of charismatic—or are they? In order to explore that question, this paper will begin by looking at how charisma is viewed in the NT. Where did the idea come from? What is its range of meanings? After these questions are addressed, the focus will be turned to the use of charisma in terms of specific grace gifts given by the Holy Spirit. From an examination of scripture, a set of characteristics that the charismata have in common will be set forth. This examination will provide a basis then to look critically at how the Apostle Paul’s understanding of charisma contrasts with Max Weber’s understanding of charisma. This analysis raises questions about the use of charisma in Christian leadership, an issue which is taken up in Rob Muthiah is associate professor of practical theology and director of field education at Haggard Graduate School of Theology, Azusa Pacific University, Azusa, California.

    Teaching, Tradition and Thaumaturgy A Sociological Examination of the Polemic of the Pastorals by Lloyd Keith Pietersen For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The Department of Biblical Studies University of Sheffield August 2000 Summary of Thesis Much historical-critical work on the opponents in the Pastoral Epistles has resulted in sweeping generalisations concerning their Jewish and/or Gnostic nature. Literary analyses have been somewhat more promising in focusing on the stereotypical nature of the polemic but either fail to do justice to the urgency of the language in the Pastorals or fail to provide a convincing description of the opponents. This thesis approaches the problem of the opponents from a social-scientific perspective. Utilising labelling theory and social control theory from the sociology of deviance, the thesis argues that the Pastorals function as a literary version of a status degradation ceremony whereby previously influential insiders within the communities addressed are transformed into outsiders. Following a survey of approaches to the problem of institutionalisation, the thesis argues that the scholarly consensus (that the Pastorals reflect the institutionalisation of initially charismatic Pauline communities) needs to be revised. It suggests a developmental model for charismatic communities which involves both the process of institutionalisation and the simultaneous, thaumaturgical subversion of that process. This model arises out of the sociological analysis of the development of a contemporary charismatic community and it is argued that developments in the second century CE church, particularly the rise of Montanism, yield results which are consistent with this model. The thesis examines the Pastorals in the light of this developmental model and argues that they reflect a power struggle within the communities between those who advocate an ecstatic spirituality rooted in the memory of a thaumaturgical Paul and the author, who appeals to Pauline tradition and sees Paul as primarily a great teacher.

The evangelicals and most especially the orthodox churches are not at home with the dispositional outburst and or the doctrinal expression of the Pentecostals. They are skeptical about having anything to do with them. The mainline churches see this group of Christians as Biblical literalists who interpret the Scriptures based on experience. The Pentecostals on the other hand see the mainline churches1 as “dead” in the sense that they shut away the Holy Spirit from their interpretation of the Bible. They accused them as carnal and too academic in their interpretation of the Scriptures. They criticized the leaders of the mainline line church as compromising the Christian faith by joining the occult, flirting with the government and deny the supernatural. Over the years both have been playing a cat and mouse game. They have been calling themselves derogatory names which the writer believes was not in the mind of Paul when he wrote about charisma. In reality, the Pentecostals and or the Charismatic movement have become a worldwide phenomenon. The brief description of the case study gives a chance to make some more general comments on what is happening under the sacred canopy of Global Catholicism where the Spirit blows, and furthermore in relation with so-called Global Pentecostalism. In other words, my working hypothesis includes the following statements: (a) Catholic Pentecostalism constitutes a variant of a more global phenomenon, which seems to challenge the organizational model of historic Christian churches. (b) The study of the Italian case is interesting because its story shows the extent to which Pentecostalism questions the Roman form of Catholicism. Elsewhere in the world, the development of the phenomenon has not encountered the same difficulties as it did in Italy. Indeed, in some cases (Brazil and the Philippines), it has been supported and accepted as a sign of new religious vitality. From this point of view, Rome is relatively far away. The Roman–Tridentine model governed by the clergy resists in Italy, while it appears weaker where the Spirit blows wherever it wants. The Charismatic movement was gradually brought back to the bed of ecclesial orthodoxy after a long persuasive work carried out by bishops and theologians towards the leaders of the movement itself. However, despite this ecclesification/clericalization process, the charismatic tension remains, and the expectation for a pneumatic church constitutes an implicit form of criticism of the Roman form of Catholicism.

    A Dialect of Doctrine: Pentecostalism and the Positive Tension between Charisma and Tradition By Joseph J. Vasquez Introduction It has been said that, “the only thing spreading faster tha Pentecostalism is the growing body of Pentecostal studies, journal, texts, and literature.”n 1 It is a fact that Pentecostalism is the fastest growing stream of Christianity in the world and that when something grows that fast that far, it will be examined. The reasons for studying this phenomenon are vast I’m sure. But I would venture to separate those reasons into 3 categories: explanation, duplication, and causation. The reason for my addition to this substantial body of literature would fall under causation of their growth. The objective of this thesis is an answer to the question, “What causes Pentecostalism to be so successful?” In my opinion the answer is that the strength of Pentecostalism lies in its apparent weakness: its dialectic of doctrine. The tension between the liberal Spirit led charismata and the conservative commitment to certain doctrines. These two should not work together. How can you advocate being Spirit directed, while at the same time employing rules and order that would seem to limit that freedom? More simply put, the strength of Pentecostalism is that it is open enough to adapt to the changes in culture (through time and/or location) and still be relevant, but restrained enough (in creed, doctrine, and practice) to maintain itself for over a century.
