THE CHARISMATIC MOVEMENT AND LUTHERAN THEOLOGY Pre/ace One of the significant developments in American church life during the past decade has been the rapid spread of the neo-Pentecostal or charis matic movement within the mainline churches. In the early sixties, experi ences and practices usually associated only with Pentecostal denominations began co appear with increasing frequency also in such churches as the Roman Catholic, Episcopalian, and Lutheran. By the mid-nineteen-sixties, it was apparent that this movement had also spread co some pascors and congregations of The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod. In cerrain areas of the Synod, tensions and even divisions had arisen over such neo-Pente costal practices as speaking in tongues, miraculous healings, prophecy, and the claimed possession of a special "baptism in the Holy Spirit." At the request of the president of the Synod, the Commission on Theology and Church Relations in 1968 began a study of the charismatic movement with special reference co the baptism in the Holy Spirit. The 1969 synodical convention specifically directed the commission co "make a comprehensive study of the charismatic movement with special emphasis on its exegetical aspects and theological implications." Ie was further suggested that "the Commission on Theology and Church Relations be encouraged co involve in its study brethren who claim to have received the baptism of the Spirit and related gifts." (Resolution 2-23, 1969 Pro ceedings. p. 90) Since that time, the commission has sought in every practical way co acquaint itself with the theology of the charismatic movement. The com mission has proceeded on the supposition that Lutherans involved in the charismatic movement do not share all the views of neo-Pentecostalism in general. -

Accordingly, the issues raised from the interpretations focused on the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, speaking in tongues, empowerment for missions, the emphasis on the vernacular language for the apprehension and comprehension of the Christian faith among others. These issues are based on the interpretation of the happenings on the day of Pentecost in Acts. This article attempts to draw attention to the significance of Pentecost Event in the light of contemporary Christian missions particularly in Africa. The article engages the Pentecost narrative or text (Acts 2:1-13) critically and exegetically to unearth its contemporary significance. It argues that, the happenings on the day of Pentecost is the root of Pentecostalism. Some theological and linguistic, missiological and ecclesiological significance are noted and discussed. Community the Life
The Life Community A CHRISTIAN TOWN It is an idea of the life of the first Christians, cultivated nowadays by various Catholic and Christian movements. It is a community of people from various vocations and occupations who decided to live together—devoting themselves to evangelization, as well as liberation and mercy services—undertaking godly initiatives in the contemporary world. The Venerable Servant of God, Fr. Franciszek Blachnicki had a vision of such way of living in the movement within the Catholic Church— Light-Life Movement —which he mentions in his writings. The longing for the creation of the Oasis Evangelizing Life Community has risen in our hearts during the years of the formation of the Light-Life Movement. But it was only the mission of undertaking such initiative by the Archbishop Adam Szal that made this endeavour come into being on the 23rd of June 2016. the Light-Life Movement of przemyska archdiocese /oazaprzemyska www.wspolnotazycia.przemyska.pl At the moment, we have the opportunity to make it come into being in a former retreat house located in the picturesque village of Wrocanka (near Krosno). However, complete renovation is required in order to be fit for the first inhabitants, who are willing to be a part of this venture that we intend to call: the Community of the Merciful Christ the Servant. We have already started the first steps of the renovation—with insufficient material resources, counting entirely on the Divine Providence. We wholeheartedly ask you to pray for this endeavour. Also, anyone who is eager to learn some details about the movement, wants to help, or provide support with material resources or otherwise is more than welcome to contact us. -

5 Starter Facts About Pentecostal Christianity 1. Pentecostalism is was born out of the evangelical revival movements of the late 19th century. There are ~13 million adherents in the United States and ~279 million worldwide. 2. There is no central governing body for Pentecostalism, but many churches belong to the Pentecostal World Fellowship. Most Pentecostals believe they practice a pure and simple form of Christianity, like the earliest stages of the Christian Church. They believe the Bible is the word of God and completely without error. 3. Speaking/interpreting tongues, prophecy, and healing are believed to be gifts from the divine. During worship, Pentecostals allow and even encourage dancing, shouting, and praying aloud. Many believe in lively worship because of the influence of the Holy Spirit. There is praying aloud, clapping and shouting, and sometimes oil anointments. 4. There is a great amount of variety within Pentecostalism due to questions over the trinity vs oneness of deity and whether upholding divine healing means modern medicine should be rejected or embraced. 5. The day of Pentecost, the namesake of the denomination, is the baptism of the twelve disciples by the Holy Spirit. It is celebrated as a joyous festival on the Sunday 50 days after Easter. Honolulu: University of Hawaii Press, 2005. 207 pp. El Shaddai (the name reportedly comes from that used by Abraham for God in the Old Testament) is one of the more remarkable popular religious movements in the world today. With a following of some 9 million to 11 million in the Philippines and abroad, it is signif icantly larger than other prosperity movements. Moreover, it differs from similar movements particularly in that it remains — however, uncomfortably — within the fold of an established denomination, in this case the Catholic Church. In this work, Wiegele attempts to understand, from an anthropological point of view, the dynamics of its growth and its impact on Philippine Catholicism. Begun in Manila in 1981 as a nondenominational Christian radio programme featuring sermons by “Brother Mike” Velarde, a businessman and real estate developer, El Shaddai struck a responsive chord especially among the poor in the slums. Soon after beginning his program, Velarde identified himself with the Catholic charismatic movement. After more than 20 years of phenomenal growth, his movement now brings together up to a million followers for allnight weekly prayer meetings and healing rallies in one of the largest parks in Metro Manila; the meetings are telecast and broadcast by radio throughout the country, there are El Shaddai chapters in practically every province of the Philippines and in 35 countries abroad, tapes of Velarde’s sermons circulate widely, and he is a significant force in national politics. -

Pentecostal/Charismatic Movements Page 1 Pentecostal Movement The first two hundred years (100-300 AD) The emphasis on the spiritual gifts was evident in the false movements of Gnosticism and in Montanism. The result of this false emphasis caused the Church to react critically against any who would seek to use the gifts. These groups emphasized the gift of prophecy, however, there is no documentation of any speaking in tongues. Montanus said that “after me there would be no more prophecy, but rather the end of the world” (Philip Schaff, History of the Christian Church, Vol II, p. 418). Since his prophecy was not fulfilled, it is obvious that he was a false prophet (Deut . 18:20-22). Because of his stress on new revelations delivered through the medium of unknown utterances or tongues, he said that he was the Comforter, the title of the Holy Spirit (Eusebius, V, XIV).
