Cherokee Ethnogenesis in Southwestern North Carolina

Rodning Dozens of Cherokee towns dotted the river valleys of the Appalachian Summit province in southwestern North Carolina during the eighteenth century (Figure 16-1; Dickens 1967, 1978, 1979; Perdue 1998; Persico 1979; Shumate et al. 2005; Smith 1979). What developments led to the formation of these Cherokee towns? Of course, native people had been living in the Appalachian Summit for thousands of years, through the Paleoindian, Archaic, Woodland, and Mississippi periods (Dickens 1976; Keel 1976; Purrington 1983; Ward and Davis 1999). What are the archaeological correlates of Cherokee culture, when are they visible archaeologically, and what can archaeology contribute to knowledge of the origins and development of Cherokee culture in southwestern North Carolina? Archaeologists, myself included, have often focused on the characteristics of pottery and other artifacts as clues about the development of Cherokee culture, which is a valid approach, but not the only approach (Dickens 1978, 1979, 1986; Hally 1986; Riggs and Rodning 2002; Rodning 2008; Schroedl 1986a; Wilson and Rodning 2002). In this paper (see also Rodning 2009a, 2010a, 2011b), I focus on the development of Cherokee towns and townhouses. Given the significance of towns and town affiliations to Cherokee identity and landscape during the 1700s (Boulware 2011; Chambers 2010; Smith 1979), I suggest that tracing the development of towns and townhouses helps us understand Cherokee ethnogenesis, more generally. -

DEMONS OF DISCORD: VIOLENCE AND THE SOCIO-POLITICAL GROWTH OF COLONIAL SOUTH CAROLINA AND GEORGIA, 1690-1776 by CORRIE HAND-STEPHENSON Under the Direction of Charles Steffen, PhD ABSTRACT Life in the colonial American south was filled with brutality and inequality. Whether it was the violence of slavery and colonial expansion or the inherent inequalities of gender relations, violence and oppression permeated nearly every facet of life. This dissertation will look critically at the development of what I am calling a culture of violence in the colonies of Georgia and South Carolina. By studying the ways in which violence effected family, social, and political interactions, my work argues that the crucible of social, racial, and political issues of these two colonies created a culture in which violence or the threat of violence permeated most human interactions. -

Warren R. Hofstra's Book, the Planting of New Virginia: Settlement
Warren R. Hofstra’s book, The Planting of New Virginia: Settlement and Landscape in the Shenandoah Valley is the product of years of assiduous scholarship. Hofstra traces the evolution of the Shenandoah Valley during the eighteenth century. In the early 1700s, the valley was unsettled but contested by Native Americans. Beginning in the 1730s, European settlement created a region of dispersed private farms. The Seven Years War stimulated the economy of Winchester, which became a garrison town, and paved the way for the transition to a town and country landscape that produced wheat for the Atlantic commercial economy. In charting these changes, Hofstra demonstrates what was unique about the valley but also how its pattern of evolution was replicated as Americans moved westward during the nineteenth century. To some degree, similar developments occurred in South Carolina. In 1731, shortly after the disastrous Yamasee war, the English Board of Trade authorized the colony’s first royal governor, Robert Johnson, to establish townships along colony’s frontier. Johnson and his superiors envisioned a landscape of towns and small family farms, a protective barrier against Indian threats on the frontier and slave rebellions by the black majority in the Carolina lowcountry. Subsidized by the colony’s government, the region attracted German Lutherans, French Huguenots, and Welsh Baptists. Situated below the fall line, this first layer of backcountry settlement eventually became known as the middlecountry. The purposes of South Carolina’s inland towns, as well as their ethnic and religious diversity, mirrored the early settlement of the Shenandoah Valley described by Hofstra. In addition to concerns for South Carolina’s security, the Board of Trade was alarmed that English settlement would be hemmed in by the French, who threatened to 2 extend their reach from Canada to Louisiana. -
