Hull History Centre: Papers of Alan Plater U DPR Papers of Alan Plater 1936-2012 Accession number: 1999/16, 2004/23, 2013/07, 2013/08, 2015/13 Biographical Background: Alan Frederick Plater was born in Jarrow in April 1935, the son of Herbert and Isabella Plater. He grew up in the Hull area, and was educated at Pickering Road Junior School and Kingston High School, Hull. He then studied architecture at King's College, Newcastle upon Tyne, becoming an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1959 (since lapsed). He worked for a short time in the profession, before becoming a full-time writer in 1960. His subsequent career has been extremely wide-ranging and remarkably successful, both in terms of his own original work, and his adaptations of literary works. He has written extensively for radio, television, films and the theatre, and for the daily and weekly press, including The Guardian, Punch, Listener, and New Statesman. His writing credits exceed 250 in number, and include: - Theatre: 'A Smashing Day'; 'Close the Coalhouse Door'; 'Trinity Tales'; 'The Fosdyke Saga' - Film: 'The Virgin and the Gypsy'; 'It Shouldn't Happen to a Vet'; 'Priest of Love' - Television: 'Z Cars'; 'The Beiderbecke Affair'; 'Barchester Chronicles'; 'The Fortunes of War'; 'A Very British Coup'; and, 'Campion' - Radio: 'Ted's Cathedral'; 'Tolpuddle'; 'The Journal of Vasilije Bogdanovic' - Books: 'The Beiderbecke Trilogy'; 'Misterioso'; 'Doggin' Around' He received numerous awards, most notably the BAFTA Writer's Award in 1988. Philip Wilson Director
Philip Wilson Director Philip is a freelance director who spent four very successful years as the Artistic Director of Salisbury Playhouse (2007-2011). He trained on the Regional Theatre Young Director Scheme (Greenwich Theatre, 1995-96), and in 2015 was awarded the inaugural David Fraser/Andrea Wonfor bursary, to train as a multi- camera television director. Recent projects include the British Premiere of Ken Ludwig’s A Fox on the Fairway at Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch and Terence Rattigan’s After The Dance at Theatre By The Lake in Keswick. His adaptations of Philip Pullman’s Grimm Tales (first produced in an immersive staging at Shoreditch Town Hall and then the Oxo Bargehouse, in 2014 and 2015) were performed at Chichester this summer. Philip’s book, Dramatic Adventures in Rhetoric, co-written with Giles Taylor, is published by Oberon Books, and Grimm Tales is available from Nick Hern Books. The Road to Bristol Old Vic
250 YEARS OLD Thank you for being part of one of the most significant anniversaries in the history of British theatre. We’ve done our best to curate a programme worthy of your efforts, inspired by the astonishing creativity of the thousands of artists – from Sarah Siddons to Sally Cookson – who have delighted and entertained you and your forebears over the last 250 years. But at heart, ours is a story of passion, survival and reinvention. All the other theatres producing plays in 1766 have fallen down or been demolished because, at some point in their history, their audiences abandoned them. This one has survived because each time it’s faced disaster, Bristolians from all over the world have given it new life. It happened in 1800, when popular demand led to the ceiling being tipped up and the new gallery being built, increasing the capacity to an eye-watering 1,600. It happened in 1933 when Blanche Rogers initiated the campaign that the old place should be saved and become ‘Bristol’s Old Vic’. It happened in 2007 when Dick Penny held the open meeting (which many of you attended), leading to the Arts Council continuing its vital support for the theatre. And it’s happening throughout this wonderful anniversary, as you carry us towards the final stage of the refurbishment that will set us securely on our adventures over the next 250 years. So as you read about the shows we’re staging and the projects we’re curating during our birthday year, don’t forget to give yourself a warm pat on the back for being the people who are, in the end, responsible for all of it. -

WELCOME to the Fifteenth Annual Last Frontier Theatre Conference. We at Prince William Sound Community College are very proud of this event, and hopefully by the end of the week you will see why. I started coming to Valdez (for the Conference) in 1995, its third year, and it became an annual pilgrimage for me. I quit jobs to make it here. I ran up credit cards. I did whatever it took for me to get to spend the week here. I crashed on the floor at the college, survived off the food at receptions, and worked on whatever anyone asked me to. No one was more important to me in those early years than Michael Warren Powell, the first coordinator of the Play Lab. I remember being in awe of how insightful the responding panel was critiquing plays that were all (in my opinion) pretty problematic. Michael and the other panelists became my idols. Which made it all the more important to me when one day I was hanging out with friends at the picnic tables in the middle of the park strip and we saw Michael walking our direction. He came up and engaged us in conversation, and we became friends. He let us know that he considered us his peers. In the late 90s, I decided that, of all the people I had met, there was no one whose life I wanted to emulate more than Michael’s. I made producing new work and nurturing playwrights my focus, and the answer to most of my questions can be found in the answer to the question “What would Michael do?” I am very excited to have him back with us this year. -

Bristol Cathedral Choir L A Y C L E R K S Revised April 2019, TP Lay Clerkships at Bristol Cathedral Bristol Cathedral is one of the city’s most beautiful buildings, containing architecture from the 12th century (most famously in the stunning Chapter House) right through to the 19th (the Nave). It has perfect acoustics for the singing of choral music and is possessed of one of the finest Edwardian Cathedral Organs in the country (built in 1907 by the prestigious firm of J W Walker, and completely restored in 1990). Further information about the Cathedral and its life can be found by visiting bristol-cathedral.co.uk There has been a choir at Bristol Cathedral since its foundation in 1542, and probably since the days of the Augustinians (from 1140). Services are sung six times a week during term time by either the Cathedral Choir (Lay Clerks & Choral Scholars and boys/girls) or the Cathedral Consort. The Choir The Cathedral Choir consists of up to 28 choristers (14 boys and 14 girls), probationary choristers, six Lay Clerks, and four Choral Scholars. The Cathedral Choir encourages singers from the University of Bristol and UWE through the Choral Scholarship scheme. The current pattern for sung worship in the Cathedral (as it affects Lay Clerks) is as follows: Monday, Tuesday rehearsal (4.45pm) for Evensong (5.15 pm) sung by the full Choir Friday rehearsal (4.45pm) for Evensong (5.15pm) sung by the Lay Clerks Saturday rehearsal (2.30pm) for Evensong (3.30pm) sung by the full Choir. There is a Saturday off once a month. -

THE AFTLS APPROACH For most of his working life, William Shakespeare was a sharer in the King’s Men, London’s leading theatre company. He knew the actors he was writing for and collaborated with them on seeing the plays into performance. All theatre is a collaboration, of course, and while actors can no longer collaborate directly with Shakespeare, the Actors From The London Stage (AFTLS) company always aims to work with him, respectfully and creatively, throughout the rehearsal process. Our company’s aim is to make his words exert their magic and their power in performance, but we do this in a vital, and perhaps unconventional, way. We have no massive sets to tower over the performers and no directorial concept to tower over the text of Shakespeare’s play. In fact, AFTLS does not have a director at all; instead, the play has been rehearsed by the actors, working together to create theatre, cooperating with each other in their imaginative engagement with the play’s words.
