Unique beauty of the textile design and printing details of the Ottoman Caftans in the 16 century miniature collection provide information about the style and technique of fabrics in the history. The aim of this presantation may be the inspiration and enlighment to the new gener- ation textile trends through past, especially driven from the samples of Turkish miniature art and expose admired colors and the design of historicKeywords: clothing. Where Have All the Symbols Gone?: A Study of Sufis and Sufi yS mbolism in Ottoman Miniature Paintings Abstract Ottoman miniature paintings represent some of the best preserved and documented works of Islamic art still extant. They differ critically from other forms of miniature painting, such as Persian miniature painting, by not representing Sufi symbolism. In the two potential sources of such symbolism, Ottoman Sufism and Persian miniature painters in the Ottoman Empire, appear to have not critically influenced Ottoman miniature painting to produce Sufi symbols, do to political, religious, and cultural factors. -

The Transformation of the Ottoman State into an Empire, demonstrated at the example of Grand Vizier Mahmud Pasha’s life and accomplishments The following seminar paper deals with Grand Vizier Mahmud Pasha’s life and the processes that turned an Ottoman principality into the Ottoman Empire. Starting with Sultan Mehmed’s II appointment in 1444, important practic- es such as the nomination of a grand vizier changed significantly. Moreover, Mehmed II built a new palace which reflected the new imperial self-percep- tion, a new code of law was installed, and the empire was centralised. All these developments become especially visible in the life of Grand Vizier Mahmud Pasha Angelovic. The paper examines secondary literature as well as contem- porary sources of Kritobolous and Ibn Khaldun. Sources on Mahmud Pasha’s life are rare and need to be analysed with caution as his posthumous legend influenced the production of literature about his life. 1. Introduction Mahmud Pasha Angelovic, born at the beginning of the 15th century in a town in Ser- bia, became one of the most influential grand viziers of the Ottoman Empire. How did that happen? In 1453, Mehmed II conquered Constantinople and made it the capital of one of the biggest empires of the early modern period. -

The waqfs have made assistance and solidarity between individuals organized and institutionalized. Especially in Islamic societies, a great importance has been attached to waqfs. The waqfs that helped institutionalize the concept of infaq met many needs of the community. One of the Islamic states where the waqfs are very active was the Ottoman Empire. The size of the waqf services in the Ottomans expanded so much that, besides the human services, waqfs for injured birds and sick animals were established. The fact that the waqfs are so widespread in the state has made it possible to refer the Ottoman Empire as a waqf civilization. One of the waqf types operating in the Ottoman Empire was the cash waqfs (CWs) which had cash money as capital. The CWs operated its capital with various Islamic finance methods. Revenues from the operating money were used in the direction of waqf purpose. The CWs provided the vital necessities of the society such as education and religion in the period they were active in the Ottoman Empire. -

Central Asia can be roughly described as the region to the north and the north-west nf the China Wall. The China Wall was built to koopthe namadie peoples -ineloding the Tuikic peoples- out of China. The Wall also roughly corresponded to the frontler of feıtile iand wbere agriculture could be practised. In Centtal Asia the tand was generally not suitable for qriculıure. but could sustain the animal hents of the nomads. The fmt "state" of the Turlcicpeoples was the Empiıe of the Hmıs. for which the apprOximate dates 220 BC-216 AD are given. But whether or not this formatian can be considered a state or empire in the proper sense of the word is not clear. because the Hmıs did not use the written word. Probably this fonnatian was a coofederation of tribes. raiher' than a state. The same can probobly he said for the Göktürks (552-745). though at the end of their primacy they hegan to use writing. The third important poIitical formation of the Turkic peoples was the Uygur State (745-940). By the end of the 8th century. two important developments took place among the Turkic peoples. 1) A great number of them hegan to move west, Lo Transoxania and contiguous regions and 2) they began to . adopt Islam. It seems that the proces of Islamization was a rather loog. -

Early Modern Women: An Interdisciplinary Journal 2011, vol. 6 Before the Odalisque: Renaissance Representations of Elite Ottoman Women Heather Madar he much-mythologized harem of the Ottoman sultans occupied a Tcentral place in European Orientalist thought for centuries.1 The harem, presented as an exotic world of forbidden sexuality inhabited by compliant yet sexually voracious women, appears in literature, art, and travel writing. While the most famous expressions of this harem fixa- tion date from later centuries,2 a focus on the harem as libidinous zone is demonstrably present in written sources from the sixteenth century. Yet an exploration of sixteenth-century European images turns up a surprising dearth of imagery in this vein. While Renaissance art lacks the languid odalisques or detailed views of the physical environment of the sultan’s harem familiar from later works, a series of largely overlooked representa- tions of elite Ottoman women do exist. Dating from the mid-sixteenth century, these images feature imagined portraits of sultanas — elite women such as Ottoman princesses, the sultan’s mother (valide sultan), or the sul- tan’s preferred concubine (haseki).3 Hurrem, the wife of sultan Süleyman, and his daughter Mihrimah appear most frequently in this genre. Yet strik- ing differences are immediately evident between their depiction and later, more familiar, views of the harem and harem women. The women shown in the Renaissance tradition were members of the sultan’s harem, yet they are not shown within a harem setting, nor do the images make reference to it. Although they are visually marked as Other, largely through the atten- tion given to their exotic dress, they are also presented as women who are of interest as individuals, possessing status and political significance. -

33 Between neo-Ottomanism and NEW PERSPECTIVES ON TURKEY Ottomania: navigating state-led and popular cultural representations of the past Murat Ergin and Yağmur Karakaya Abstract In contemporary Turkey, a growing interest in Ottoman history represents a change in both the official state discourse and popular culture. This nostalgia appropriates, reinterprets, decontextualizes, and juxtaposes formerly distinct symbols, ideas, objects, and histories in unprecedented ways. In this paper, we distinguish between state-led neo-Ottomanism and popular cultural Ottomania, focusing on the ways in which people in Turkey are interpellated by these two different yet interrelated discourses, depending on their social positions. As the boundary between highbrow and popular culture erodes, popular cultural representations come to reinterpret and rehabilitate the Ottoman past while also inventing new insecurities centering on historical “truth.” Utilizing in-depth interviews, we show that individuals juxtapose the popular television series Muhteşem Yüzyıl (The Magnificent Century) with what they deem “proper” history, in the process rendering popular culture a “false” version. We also identify four particular interpretive clusters among the consumers of Ottomania: for some, the Ottoman Empire was the epitome of tolerance, where different groups lived peacefully; for others, the imperial past represents Turkish and/or Islamic identities; and finally, critics see the empire as a burden on contemporary Turkey.
