It was released in August for , PlayStation 3 and ; Mafia II: Director's Cut was released by in December 2011. The game is a sequel to the 2002 Mafia series and the second part of the Mafia series. Set in the fictional Empire Bay (based on New York, as well as aspects of , , , Boston and Detroit) during the 1940s and 1950s, the story follows the Sikillian-American mobster and war veteran Vito Scaletta, who becomes embroiled in a power struggle among the city's mafia family crime while attempting to repay his father's debts and provide a better lifestyle. The game is played from a third-person point of view and its world is moved on foot or by vehicle. The criminal activity of the player's character can provoke a response from law enforcement, as measured by the wanted system that regulates the aggression of their reaction. Development began in 2003, shortly after the release of the first Mafia game. On release, Mafia II received generally positive reviews from critics, with praise particularly directed at history, although the restrictive world design was criticized. Its successor, Mafia III, was released in 2016. The remastered game, entitled Mafia II: Definitive Edition, was developed by d3t Limited and and released by 2K Games on May 19, 2020. The final edition was also included in the Mafia: Trilogy package, released on September 25, 2020. Gameplay Player Character is involved in a shootout with the authorities. Police awareness in the game works in the same way as in the previous game, although now the player can pay bribes after committing a crime. However, escaping from the authorities will still lead to the fact that they will shoot the player. The game takes place in the 1940s - early 1950s era of Empire Bay, a fictional city based on New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Boston and Detroit. The game has 50 cars, as well as licensed music from that era. Depending on the weather during the game, the vehicles are handled differently. For example, at the beginning of the In winter, vehicles are likely to slip on the road because of the ice. Many firearms from previous return games, such as Thompson's submachine gun and 1911 Colt, as well as pump action shotguns. The new World War II weapon, the MG 42 and the Beretta Model 38, also appear in the game. Interaction with objects in the environment includes two action buttons: standard action and violent action (for example, when stealing a car, the player can choose either to choose his lock or break the window glass) used in context sensitive situations. The map is on, as in the original Mafia game, but the checkpoint system has been completely revised. The new controls include a cover- up system that allows the player to take cover behind objects (such as generators, walls and large boxes) and shoot enemies rather than simply entering into an arbitrary squat to pose for them. This feature provides tactical support against enemies and has become the most important technique of the genre. Cutting down the game are created by a game engine in real time. For example, if a player drives in a car and the logging begins, the player will drive the same car with the same condition (damaged or intact) and will wear the same clothes. There are exceptions, however, such as the opening sequence and the scene that depicts the explosion of the Empire Arms Hotel in Chapter 10, which are pre- visualized video clips. The game includes three different in-game radio stations (Empire Central Radio, Empire Classical Radio and Delta Radio) with licensed music, news and advertising. Radio stations include music from a variety of genres including rock 'n' roll, big band, rhythm and blues and doo-wop, with licensed songs by Chuck Berry, The Everly Brothers, Dean Martin, Little Richard, Muddy Waters, Buddy Holly and Crickets, Bing Crosby, Bill Haley and his comets, Jordets, Richie Valenza, Beau Diddley, Synopsis Player Character drives through the streets of Empire Bay. Mafia II mainly takes place in 1951, from spring to autumn, with the first few chapters set in early 1945, in winter. Set almost a decade after the first game, Mafia II takes place between two different periods of time - the mid-1940s and early 1950s - in the fictional American city of Empire Bay; The first chapter of the game takes place in an unnamed city in Sicily, while the sixth is in prison somewhere outside Empire Bay. The city is located on the east coast of the United States and is divided by a river, and consists of several districts, including affluent suburbs, slums and apartment blocks for various immigrant city races, including Irish, African-American, Chinese and Italian, and industrial complexes, with the city supported by a large port, a railway station, a large prison outside the city, several parks, and a collection of shopping malls and supermarkets. The game's main story sees the city divided between a number of criminal outfits, including three mafia families: the Falcone family, the Vinci family, and the Clemente family-Chinese triad outfit, the Irish mafia, and several street gangs. The design of the city, including architectural styles, cultures, public transportation and attractions, are influenced by real American cities, including New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston and Detroit, during the two respective periods of time used in the game. Two of the DLC game packages, Betrayal of Jimmy and Jimmy Vendetta, also took place in the early 1950s, but in another canon, the installation features mostly new gangs and characters. The third DLC, The Adventures of Joe, is set during the main storyline events and bridges the gap between the two time periods. Plot In 1943, Sicilian immigrant Vito Scaletta was arrested during a robbery and decided to join the United States Army to avoid jail. During Operation Husky, he is captured by the Italians, but watches in fear how his executioners may be surrendering to the Allies on the orders of a local mafia boss. Returning home to Empire Bay in early 1945 due to injury, Vito reunites with his childhood friend Joe Barbaro, who supplies him with forged documents about his dismissal, and learns that his late father left his family in debt to the shark-loan. He briefly works for his father's former employer Derek Pappalardo, who then recommends it to Henry Tomasino, the man in the Clemente family of crime, because of his own ties to Joe. Working with Joe for both Henry and caporige Luca Gurino, Vito provides enough money to pay off his father's debt, but is arrested for stealing and selling food stamps and sentenced to ten years in prison. While in prison, he befriended Leo Galante, consiglieri Don Frank Vinci, but learns that his mother died, and all the money he received, spent on her funeral. In 1951, Vito was released on parole due to his ties to Leo. Reuniting with Joe, the couple make their way up the ranks of the Falcone family, led by Dona Carlo Falcone and his underboss Eddie Scarpa. After Vito rescues two Carlo people from Luca, whom he leaves dead, he earns the respect of Carlo, making him and Joe made men in his organization, allowing them to provide a better lifestyle. Shortly thereafter, upon learning that the Clements were conducting drug operations, fighting the commission's traditions, Carlo ordered Vito and Joe to kill Don Alberto Clemente. After hitting Henry coming to Eddie through Vito in search of a new job, and ordered to kill Leo. Although Vito warns Leo and helps him city, the Falcons nonetheless welcome Henry into the family. Vito believes that his personal life will fall into turmoil after his sister Francesca distances himself from him because of his mafia lifestyle, and his house is destroyed in the incendiary bomb of the Irish mafia. To regain his fortune, Vito joins Joe and Henry to profit from the sale of heroin bought from the city triads. However, Carlo, who also conducts drug operations behind the Commission's back, learns about it and demands a reduction in their profits. When Vito and Joe meet with Henry to discuss the matter, they witness his publicly executed Triads, who then escape with their money. In retaliation, the pair kill triads guard Jae Yun Wong, despite his claims that Henry was a federal informant but unable to get the money. Indebted to the shark-credit Bruno Levin, whose money they lent to deal with heroin, Vito and Joe take the job to pay off the debt, including the murder of retired mobster Tommy Angelo. Vito also kills Derek after learning that he ordered the murder of his father. When the Vinci family kidnaps and tortures Joe, Vito rescues him, but the couple learns that their actions have sparked a war between the mafia and the triads. After paying off the debt to Bruno (shown that the same loan shark his father was in debt), Vito called Carlo to the planetarium for a meeting. On the way there, Leo and Triad boss Mr. Chu pick him up and the former punishes Vito for the problems he caused, before revealing that Carlo wants to kill Vito for vouching for Henry, who really was an informant. However, grateful to Vito for saving his life, Leo arranged with the Commission and the Triads to spare Vito if he killed Carlo, who is also marked for the dead because of his ambitions to become the only mafia boss in Empire Bay and his involvement in drugs, which caused conflict in the first place. In the planetarium, Vito discovers that Carlo offered to make Joe a caporegim if he kills him, but he refuses to side with Vito, helping him kill Carlo. After that, Vito leaves with Leo to celebrate, while Joe is stolen in a separate car, as a result of which Vito asks where his yat. Leo reveals that their deal does not cover Joe, to the shock of Vito, who watches helplessly as his friend maims to any fate waiting for him. Preliminary work on the development of Mafia II began in 2004; work on the script began in 2003. Originally intended for The PlayStation 2 and Xbox, the game was moved to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2005, after difficulties with the game engine developer. This was officially announced in August 2007 at the Leipzig Convention of the Games. The playable version of the game was achieved in 2007 or 2008. Mafia II was expected to be released in late 2009, but was postponed until its release in August 2010. Advertising was released for the game in August 2007. The second trailer was released on Spike VGA on December 14, 2008. An extended version of the trailer was released on January 15 with an additional 30 seconds of footage. The first frames of the gameplay debuted on GameSpot on April 17, 2009 as part of an interview with Mafia II producer Denby Grace. The video shows aspects of driving and playing gameplay, as well as an image of engine physics. The third trailer was uploaded to the website on May 28, 2009. From June 1, 2009, four short videos are to be added to the Mafia II website. the first of these is called The Art of Persuasion and includes the song Mercy by Mr. Percy singer Varetta Dillard. Another video was released with footage from the Buzzsaw mission. The video reveals the fate of the Fat Man, which appeared in previous trailers. On March 27, 2010, a new trailer was released showing the PhysX-based fabric and physics system used in the game. On August 3, 2010, Sheridan Fischer, the face of Playboy Swim 2010, became the official ambassador for Mafia II. The demo for the game was released on August 10, 2010 on Steam, Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Network. Mafia II was released on August 24, 2010 in North America, August 26 in Australia and August 27 internationally. Pre-order bonuses on May 26, 2010, four packages of content were offered as pre-order bonuses in America and European countries, each of which is available through different retailers. The Vegas package, containing two additional cars and costumes for the Vito and War Hero Pack, containing two cars and military-style suits, was available in GameStop and EBGames. A Renegade Pack containing two sports cars and two jackets was available from Amazon and the Greaser Pack with two hot rods and two costumes were available for best buy customers. These pre-order packages are available for purchase as game add-ons in PlayStation Network, Xbox Live and Steam. On May 26, 2010, the release of the collection book for Mafia II. The PlayStation 3 version of PlayStation 3 became a matter of controversy on the 2K Mafia II forums, when 2K Interactive Marketing Manager Elizabeth Toby stated that the PlayStation 3 version would lack some of the graphic details that were present in Windows and Xbox 360 versions, including three-dimensional grass, pooled blood, blood-forming bodies. and realistic fabric physics. These details are said to have been present in earlier game builds, but had to be removed to increase the frame rate in the game. After its release, the PlayStation 3 version received the same or higher review than the Xbox 360 version from Destructoid and Nowgamer (sites that view the game on multiple platforms, not the usual practice of reviewing one platform) because of the additional content. The downloadable Content Three Downloadable Content (DLC) packages were released for the game: Jimmy's Betrayal is the first DLC package announced by Sony on June 15, 2010 at . It was originally released exclusively for PlayStation 3 as a free add-on to the base game, and was then ported to other platforms. Set in a different canon from the basic game, the story follows a gun for hiring the name Jimmy, who works for both the Irish Mafia and Gravina Criminal Family to undermine rival gangs before setting up his employers and being arrested. Missions are structured in a non-linear way, like , and include an attack score feature in which players earn points for certain actions; both features will return in the second and third DLC. Jimmy's Vendetta is the second DLC package for the game. It was released on PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Marketplace and Steam on September 7, 2010. The story takes from the events of Jimmy's Betrayal as Jimmy escapes from prison and takes revenge on those who framed him. Joe's Adventures is the third and final DLC released on November 23, 2010. The story bridges the gap between two periods of time in the history of the base game, and features Joe Barbaro as the main character, who is forced to leave Empire Bay for five years because of a hit put on it by Luca Gurino, but returns in 1950 and works his way up the ranks of the Falcone family, in the process of uncovering a plot to overthrow Don Carlo Falcone's family. DLC combines standard missions with scores based on missions. It is estimated to provide eight hours of gameplay. Alternative editions of Mafia II: Collector's Edition is a steel book that includes 9 titles: Made Man Pack (two classic luxury cars and two made man costumes, including a vintage tuxedo), Art Book (photo album-style of the game design process), a CD of the orchestral soundtrack (recorded by the Prague Orchestra FILMHarmonic) and map of the Empire Bay. Mafia II: Digital Deluxe Edition is actually the same as the physical edition, including the Made Man package, as well as digitized versions of the soundtrack, art book and map. Mafia II: Special Extended Edition is a compilation published by 1C for the Russian market. It includes a basic game, three DLC packages (Betrayal of Jimmy, Vendetta Jimmy and Joe's Adventures), and four pack styles (Vegas Pack, Renegade Pack, Greaser Pack, and War Hero Pack). It was released on December 3, 2010 for Windows. The same package was released on December 1, 2011 for Western markets like Mafia II: Director Cut on Windows, OS X and their respective labels on consoles. In July 2015, this full edition of the game became unavailable on Steam in Western countries. However, The Made Man Pack, previously only available in the collectible version, is now available as DLC on Xbox Live. The mobile version of the Mafia II version was developed for mobile phones and smartphones Twistbox Games and Oasys Mobile, and was published by Connect2Media. The game is a prequel to Mafia II and takes place in 1938, bridling the gap between mafia and mafia II. The story centers around Marco Rousset, sold to the criminal family of Salieri and nephew of the family gunsmith Vincenzo, who travels to Empire Bay in search of Tommy Angelo, who betrayed the family and was responsible for its fall. Along the way, he finds work for the Falcone family, with Don Carlo Falcone promising to help find Tommy, but Marco soon finds himself too deep in the power struggle between the mafia families of Empire Bay and risks not only not finding Tommy, but also losing his own life. The final edition of the Mafia II remastered version with updated graphics called Mafia II: Definitive Edition was released on PlayStation 4, and Microsoft Windows on May 19, 2020. Owners of the original version of Steam updated their copy of the game to Definitive Edition at no additional cost. The final edition, which includes all the extensions of history and style packages, was designed by Hangar 13 (developers of Mafia III), with d3t Limited remastering works of art. The final edition was later included in the Mafia: Trilogy package, which was released on September 25, 2020, and includes a remake of the first game, called Mafia: Definitive Edition, and a version of Mafia III consisting of all the history extension packages. Greg Miller of IGN gave the game 7/10, calling it a solid little game that will give you a fun ride - just don't expect peace. Kevin VanOrd of GameSpot gave it 8.5 and stated: The exciting action of Mafia II and the uncompromising history of the crowd make for an impressive and brutal adventure. Matt Burtz of gave it 9.0/10, writing that in an era when video games are moving away from relying on cinematography for storytelling, Mafia II relies on a rich gangster story to weave an exciting drama family, friendship, loyalty, betrayal and pragmatism. The most negative review came from John Teti of , who gave the game 4/10 and wrote that Mafia II gets the last word, destroying the myth that the mafia is interesting at all. He claims that the crowd world of hell boredom is populated by aggressively stupid vending machines. These drones wake up every morning, perform a number of repetitive tasks and return home. Ben Croshaw called the game common and noted the similarities between the main characters and the main characters of Grand Theft Auto IV, but criticized the lack of features common in other sandbox games. He also criticized mundane parts of the game, such as driving, which makes the game feel unnecessarily bland. Controversy Removed Content Was a significant amount of content removed from the final release of Mafia II. This deleted content includes storylines, locations, characters, game modes, melee weapons and stores; Different players have found leftovers for all these features in the game files. The controversy was that the mission to destroy cars from the main game, as was viewed on 2009, was removed from the final release and eventually re-appeared in Joe's Adventures DLC, which led fans to wonder whether the content had been removed from the main game to create additional content. The reaction of the victims of the mob and civic groups Sonia Alfano, a member of the European Parliament and president of the Italian Association of Families of Mafia Victims, called for a ban on the game. Alfano Beppe's father was killed by the mafia in 1993. Take-Two Interactive was quick to respond, saying that the image of the Game of the is no different from the movies about organized crime, such as The Godfather. They also responded to accusations of racism by Unico National, which argued that the game portrays Italian-Americans unfairly and insents youth into violent stereotypes. Mafia II has the most profanity in a video game, particularly the word fuck, which is spoken 397 times, beating the previous record holder, House of the Dead: Overkill. On August 22, 2015, digital sales of the Mafia II PC version were suspended by Steam and other digital retailers for unexplained reasons. The game was restored to Steam on June 1, 2016. Sequel Home: Mafia III July 28, 2015, 2K Games announced the sequel to Mafia III. The game, which was released on October 7, 2016, takes place in New Bordeaux, based in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1968, seventeen years after the events in Mafia II. The main character, Lincoln Clay, is a black veteran who returns home to discover that his former gang is facing problems. Developers have said they want to move away from the traditional Italian mafia of the first two mafia games in this game, although the game still has an Italian mafia family that serve as the game's main antagonists. The game includes several Mafia II callbacks, including the return of Vito Scaletta, who plays a supporting role in the game.
