Anglo-Saxon Introduction.Pptx Anglo-Saxon Introduction August 28, 2013 Anglo-Saxon Timeline 449-1066 • 300 B.C.-Celts in Britain • 55 B.C.-A.D. 409-Roman Invasion • A.D. 449-Anglo-Saxon Invasion • A.D. 400-699-Spread of Christianity • A.D. 878-King Alfred against the Danes • A.D. 1066-Norman Invasion The Celts Before and During the 4th Century B.C. • Britain was the home to many Celt Tribes • King Arthur-was a famous Celtic King • Celtic Religion-a form of animism, which is a belief that gods/spirits controlled all aspects of life and could take the form of trees, rivers fire, thunder, etc. Roman Invasion • 55 B.C.-Julius Ceasar invades Britain • A.D. 43-Celts defeated by Claudius- Romans build walls, villas, baths, roads, etc. • A.D. 409-Romans evacuate their troops • Britain is vulnerable to attack • The central government breaks down Hadrian’s Wall • It was built by the Roman emperor, Hadrian, to protect the Romans from the Celts. • The wall was built all the way across northern England to protect the Romans from the celtic tribes in the north. • The Romans ruled ended because Italy was invaded and they were called home. The Anglo-Saxon Invasion A.D. 449 The Anglo-Saxons pushed The Anglo-Saxons the Celts into the far west country • They were the new settlers. • They are were a mixture of people from Germany, Denmark, and northern Holland. • The countries they came from were the Saxons, Franks, and Frisians were the German-Dutch, the Angles were southern Danish, and the Jutes were northern Danish. The Anglo-Saxon Tribes Three Tribes • The Anglo-Saxons were made up of three tribes: • Angles-Southern Danish • Saxons-German-Dutch • Jutes-Northern Danish Anglo-Saxon Society • Warrior-based society, led by a strong warrior chief. Anglo-Saxon Chronicle • “Warfare was the order of the day” (between clans, tribes, and outside invaders) • Anglo-Saxon life was dominated by the need to protect the clan and home from enemies. • Fame and success were achieved through loyalty to a leader and success was measured by gifts received from leaders • English emerged as a language. Women in the Anglo-Saxon Society • The women in the Anglo-Saxon society had rights. • They inherited and held property (even when married) and were offered substantial gifts of money and land from prospective husbands. Anglo-Saxon Women Anglo-Saxon Life • After their arrival many stayed away from Roman towns • They preferred to live in small villages • Some Saxons built wooden houses inside the walls of Roman towns • English emerged as a written language The Anglo-Saxon Religion • They were pagan, they believed in • They were superstitious. The Anglo-Saxon age in Britain was from around AD410 to 1066. They were a mix of tribes from Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands. The three biggest were the Angles, the Saxons and the Jutes. The land they settled in was 'Angle-land', or England. If we use the modern names for the countries they came from, the Saxons were German-Dutch, the Angles were southern Danish, and the Jutes were northern Danish. Growing up in an Anglo-Saxon village Anglo-Saxon children had to grow up quickly. By the time they were ten, they were seen as an adult. This wasn't always a good thing. They had to work as hard as any adult and would be punished as adults, if they stole or broke the law. Girls worked in the home. They were in charge of housekeeping, weaving cloth, cooking meals, making cheese and brewing ale. Boys learned the skills of their fathers. They learned to chop down trees with an axe, how to plough a field and how to use a spear in battle. They also fished and went hunting with other men from the village. Only a few girls and boys learned to read and write. The sons of kings or wealthy families might be taught at home by a private teacher. The only schools were run by the Christian church, in monasteries. Some children lived there to train as monks and nuns.

At this time, the Romans ruled Britain. The Anglo-Saxons raided the south and east shores of England. The Romans were not happy and fought back. They had not trained the British to defend themselves therefore Britain no longer had a strong army to defend it from the invaders. There were many battles between Anglo-Saxons and Britons and the Anglo-Saxons succeeded. More and more Anglo-Saxons arrived to take land for themselves. It is for this reason that the time of the Anglo-Saxons is usually thought of as beginning about AD 450.     The Cimbri of Denmark, the Norse and Danish Vikings, and Y-DNA Haplogroup R-S28/U152 - (Hypothesis A) David K. Faux The goal of the present work is to assemble widely scattered facts to accurately record the story of one of Europe’s most enigmatic people of the early historic era – the Cimbri. To meet this goal, the present study will trace the antecedents and descendants of the Cimbri, who reside or resided in the northern part of the Jutland Peninsula, in what is today known as the County of Himmerland, Denmark. It is likely that the name Cimbri came to represent the peoples of the Cimbric Peninsula and nearby islands, now called Jutland, Fyn and so on. Very early (3rd Century BC) Greek sources also make note of the Teutones, a tribe closely associated with the Cimbri, however their specific place of residence is not precisely located. It is not until the 1st Century AD that Roman commentators describe other tribes residing within this geographical area. At some point before 500 AD, there is no further mention of the Cimbri or Teutones in any source, and the Cimbric Cheronese (Peninsula) is then called Jutland. As we shall see, problems in accomplishing this task are somewhat daunting. For example, there are inconsistencies in datasources, and highly conflicting viewpoints expressed by those interpreting the data. These difficulties can be addressed by a careful sifting of diverse material that has come to light largely due to the storehouse of primary source information accessed by the power of the Internet. Historical, archaeological and genetic data will be integrated to lift the veil that has to date obscured the story of the Cimbri, or Cimbrian, peoples.

Lewis University of Caen Normandy, CRAHAM [email protected] As their military fortunes waxed and waned, the Scandinavian armies would move back and forth across the Channel with some regularity [...] appearing under different names and in different constellations in different places – Neil Price1 Little is known about the power of the Danish kings in the second half of the ninth century when several Viking forces ravaged Frankia and Britain – Niels Lund2 The Anglo-Saxon scholar Patrick Wormald once pointed out: ‘It is strange that, while students of other Germanic peoples have been obsessed with the identity and office of their leaders, Viking scholars have said very little of such things – a literal case of Hamlet without princes of Denmark!’3 The reason for this state of affairs is two-fold. First, there is a dearth of reliable historical, linguistic and archaeological evidence regarding the origins of the so-called ‘great army’ in England, except that it does seem, and is generally believed, that they were predominantly Danes - which of course does not at all mean that they all they came directly from Denmark itself, nor that ‘Danes’ only came from the confines of modern Denmark. Clare Downham is surely right in saying that ‘the political history of vikings has proved controversial due to a lack of consensus as to what constitutes reliable evidence’.4 Second, the long and fascinating, but perhaps ultimately unhealthy, obsession with the legendary Ragnarr loðbrók and his litany of supposed sons has distracted attention from what we might learn from a close and separate examination of some of the named leaders of the ‘great army’ in England, without any inferences being drawn from later Northern sagas about their dubious familial relationships to one another.5 This article explores the case of one such ‘Prince of Denmark’ called Hálfdan ‘king of the Danes’.
