Lesser Feasts and Fasts 2018 Conforming to General Convention 2018 1 Preface Christians have since ancient times honored men and women whose lives represent heroic commitment to Christ and who have borne witness to their faith even at the cost of their lives. Such witnesses, by the grace of God, live in every age. The criteria used in the selection of those to be commemorated in the Episcopal Church are set out below and represent a growing consensus among provinces of the Anglican Communion also engaged in enriching their calendars. What we celebrate in the lives of the saints is the presence of Christ expressing itself in and through particular lives lived in the midst of specific historical circumstances. In the saints we are not dealing primarily with absolutes of perfection but human lives, in all their diversity, open to the motions of the Holy Spirit. Many a holy life, when carefully examined, will reveal flaws or the bias of a particular moment in history or ecclesial perspective. It should encourage us to realize that the saints, like us, are first and foremost redeemed sinners in whom the risen Christ’s words to St. Paul come to fulfillment, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” The “lesser feasts” provide opportunities for optional observance. They are not intended to replace the fundamental celebration of Sunday and major Holy Days. As the Standing Liturgical Commission and the General Convention add or delete names from the calendar, successive editions of this volume will be published, each edition bearing in the title the date of the General Convention to which it is a response. -

THE KINGDOM AND COINS OF BURGRED. BY NATHAN HEYWOOD. HE Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia became tributary to Egbert, King of Wessex, on the death of Ludica, A.D. 825, and was afterwards governed successively by Wiglaf, 825-839 ; Bertulf, 839-852 ; and Burgred, 852-874. Burgred married Aethelswith, a daughter of Ethelwlf, King of Wessex, grand- daughter <if Egbert, and the sister of Ethelred I. and Alfred the Great, successive kings of Wessex.1 When Burgred came to the throne the Danes were in occupation of southern Mercia,3 but during the first year of his reign they were driven out by ^Fkhelwlf and the West Saxons, who thereupon joined the Mercian forces, under the personal command of Burgred, in subduing the Welsh.3 Having at length obtained complete possession of his dominions he ruled in peace until 866, when the Danes in overwhelming numbers invaded East Anglia and wintered o o there.4 In the following year, 867, the enemy commenced the campaign 1 " And upon this [subjugation of North-Welsh] after Easter Ethelwlf, King of West Saxons, gave his daughter to Burgred, King of Mercia." The Vikings The Lile Told Story of Scandanavia in the Dark Ages The Viking (modern day Danes, Norwegians, and Swedes) seafaring excursions occurred from about 780 to 1070 AD. They started raiding and pillaging in the north BalCc region of Europe. By the mid 900s (10th century) they had established such a permanent presence across France and England that they were simply paid off (“Danegeld”) to cohabitate in peace. They conquered most of England, as the Romans had, but they did it in only 15 years! They formed legal systems in England that formed the basis of Brish Common Law, which at one Cme would later govern the majority of the world. They eventually adapted the western monarchy form of government, converted to ChrisCanity, and integrated into France, England, Germany, Italy, Russia, Syria, and out into the AtlanCc. They also brought ChrisCanity back to their home countries, set up monarchies, and forged the countries of Norway, Denmark, Sweden, and Russia. It was the direct descendant of the Vikings (from Normandy) who led the capture of Jerusalem during the First Crusade. The Romans dominated Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and England. They never could conquer the Germanic people to the north. The Germanic people sacked Rome three Cmes between 435 and 489 CE. Aer the Fall of Rome, a mass migraon of Germanic people occurred to the west (to France and England). The Frisians were at the center of a great trade route between the northern Germans (“Nordsman”) and bulk of Germanic peoples now in western Europe. High Tech in the 400s-700s The ships of the day were the hulk and the cog. -

1.1 Anglo- Saxon society Key topic 1: Anglo- Saxon England and 1.2 The last years of Edward the Confessor and the succession crisis the Norman Conquest, 1060-1066 1.3 The rival claimants for the throne 1.4 The Norman invasion The first key topic is focused on the final years of Anglo-Saxon England, covering its political, social and economic make-up, as well as the dramatic events of 1066. While the popular view is often of a barbarous Dark-Ages kingdom, students should recognise that in reality Anglo-Saxon England was prosperous and well governed. They should understand that society was characterised by a hierarchical system of government and they should appreciate the influence of the Church. They should also be aware that while Edward the Confessor was pious and respected, real power in the 1060s lay with the Godwin family and in particular Earl Harold of Wessex. Students should understand events leading up to the death of Edward the Confessor in 1066: Harold Godwinson’s succession as Earl of Wessex on his father’s death in 1053 inheriting the richest earldom in England; his embassy to Normandy and the claims of disputed Norman sources that he pledged allegiance to Duke William; his exiling of his brother Tostig, removing a rival to the throne. Harold’s powerful rival claimants – William of Normandy, Harald Hardrada and Edgar – and their motives should also be covered. Students should understand the range of causes of Harold’s eventual defeat, including the superior generalship of his opponent, Duke William of Normandy, the respective quality of the two armies and Harold’s own mistakes. -

The Holy See ADDRESS OF HIS HOLINESS BENEDICT XVI TO STUDENTS AND STAFF OF THE VENERABLE ENGLISH COLLEGE Monday, 3 December 2012 Your Eminence, dear Brother Bishops, Monsignor Hudson, Students and Staff of the Venerable English College, It gives me great pleasure to welcome you today to the Apostolic Palace, the House of Peter. I greet my Venerable brother, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor, a former Rector of the College, and I thank Archbishop Vincent Nichols for his kind words, spoken on behalf of all present. I too look back with great thanksgiving in my heart to the days that I spent in your country in September 2010. Indeed, I was pleased to see some of you at Oscott College on that occasion, and I pray that the Lord will continue to call forth many saintly vocations to the priesthood and the religious life from your homeland. Through God’s grace, the Catholic community of England and Wales is blessed with a long tradition of zeal for the faith and loyalty to the Apostolic See. At much the same time as your Saxon forebears were building the Schola Saxonum, establishing a presence in Rome close to the tomb of Peter, Saint Boniface was at work evangelizing the peoples of Germany. So as a former priest and Archbishop of the See of Munich and Freising, which owes its foundation to that great English missionary, I am conscious that my spiritual ancestry is linked with yours. Earlier still, of course, my predecessor Pope Gregory the Great was moved to send Augustine of Canterbury to your shores, to plant the seeds of Christian faith on Anglo-Saxon soil. -

Who were the Anglo-Saxons? Part of History Anglo-Saxons The last Roman soldiers left Britain in 410. New people came in ships across the North Sea – the Anglo-Saxons. The Anglo-Saxon age in Britain was from around AD410 to 1066. They were a mix of tribes from Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands. The three biggest were the Angles, the Saxons and the Jutes. The land they settled in was 'Angle-land', or England. If we use the modern names for the countries they came from, the Saxons were German-Dutch, the Angles were southern Danish, and the Jutes were northern Danish. Growing up in an Anglo-Saxon village Anglo-Saxon children had to grow up quickly. By the time they were ten, they were seen as an adult. This wasn't always a good thing. They had to work as hard as any adult and would be punished as adults, if they stole or broke the law. Girls worked in the home. They were in charge of housekeeping, weaving cloth, cooking meals, making cheese and brewing ale. Boys learned the skills of their fathers. They learned to chop down trees with an axe, how to plough a field and how to use a spear in battle. They also fished and went hunting with other men from the village. Only a few girls and boys learned to read and write. The sons of kings or wealthy families might be taught at home by a private teacher. The only schools were run by the Christian church, in monasteries. Some children lived there to train as monks and nuns. -

The Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia and the origins and distribution of common fields* by Susan Oosthuizen Abstract: This paper aims to explore the hypothesis that the agricultural layouts and organisation that had de- veloped into common fields by the high middle ages may have had their origins in the ‘long’ eighth century, between about 670 and 840 AD. It begins by reiterating the distinction between medieval open and common fields, and the problems that inhibit current explanations for their period of origin and distribution. The distribution of common fields is reviewed and the coincidence with the kingdom of Mercia noted. Evidence pointing towards an earlier date for the origin of fields is reviewed. Current views of Mercia in the ‘long’ eighth century are discussed and it is shown that the kingdom had both the cultural and economic vitality to implement far-reaching landscape organisation. The proposition that early forms of these field systems may have originated in the ‘long’ eighth century is considered, and the paper concludes with suggestions for further research. Open and common fields (a specialised form of open field) endured in the English landscape for over a thousand years and their physical remains still survive in many places. A great deal is known and understood about their distribution and physical appearance, about their man- agement from their peak in the thirteenth century through the changes of the later medieval and early modern periods, and about how and when they disappeared. Their origins, however, present a continuing problem partly, at least, because of the difficulties in extrapolating in- formation about such beginnings from documentary sources and upstanding earthworks that record – or fossilise – mature or even late field systems. -
