Entirely understood. If we can suggest topics, fit the member and the officer to the topic and plan this weeks in advance, then this will work better.
Could the team come up with topics and angles and I can propose these to Philip to plan into their schedule weeks in advance?
Here is what I have suggested in the past. No 1 has been done.
1. Energy – this one he wants to do next Wednesday night based on our front page today in the Sentinel – ECO energy insulation of hundreds of homes. Seems a perfect fit for Andy Platt – plus it is the day after we go live with out CBM – Six Towns knows nothing of this yet. Other guests would be energy academics, business leaders, fuel poverty campaigners etc. 2. Business – brining in LEP reps, progressive business people, business academics and of course a cabinet member. Issues – try to focus on companies that are thriving – hopes for new business, regeneration aspiration – reality checks. Perhaps hosted at Michelin or 3. Education and innovation – future generations of creatives – perhaps hosted at one of our new revamped schools or the University. Making the links between investing in education, schools, links to business – students with great ideas etc. 4. Environment – Stoke as a great place to live – our parks, green spaces, biodiversity, the Village Show and allotments, community groups, gardening competition and Chelsea, cycling and transport. Green companies and new business opportunities – hence link into other areas. Perhaps at Burslem Park. 5. Community and housing – rebuilding the community spirit, neighbourhoods – community groups, housing associations, architecture experts – local community centre where we are investing in homes.
Other suggestions could be :
1. Fostering and adoption – issues, difficulties, cultural issues personal stories and challenges for the future. 2. Culture – what role for art, music and culture in the future of the city. Our new artists. Cermaics. Is it the role of business or the council?
Any other ideas and comments please?
Regards
Jeremy

1 For the record looking at the email trail this is confusing two issues.
In essence, I fully support the positives and merits of good media relationship, that's a given.
What is an issue is about priority, purpose and relevance as discussed at CDB this am. The specifics for me still to be clarified :
1. What is the County's involvement in 6 town radio, who are they fielding any links back to PCC?
2. Given lack of portfolio holder engagement, I don't want the business getting caught in the cross fire of member / officer led approach ? This is particularly true in regard to early intervention/ prevention aspects which is high on the PCC agenda, which may or may not be relevant to the conversation and which is fraught with political sensitivities.
2. What is the angle and purpose of the approach? Are we fielding the right officer ?
We are keen to work in partnership to develop positive media promotion, if we can get clarification and assurances we will be fine. Tony

Dear all,
I understand your concerns, but I genuinely believe that positive engagement is the only way to get the media on our side. I think the risks of non-engagement are greater and create hostility and lack of trust on both sides.
6 Towns is a small community radio station. It’s quirky but it’s a good practise ground for officers and councillors with minimum risk – but also they do have an influence with thousands of followers in the social media field.
By providing regular help and support to he has really started to be more appreciative of the work we do and wants to work with to develop a series of programmes on issues that we are involved in. We have been successful so far not only in getting some positive coverage but also in building a more positive and sympathetic relationship with a local opinion former, even if his personal views may not be entirely politically correct. PR is as much about diplomacy and relationship development as message management.
Very best wishes
Jeremy

I don't think Tony is keen for us to put officers forward for this radio forum. It seems potentially a risky strategy. I have copied in Tony for info also.

Ruth,
Yes its going ahead. Just no-one from the council yet. The County Council have put someone forward now. I spoke to Cllr Hassall and she can’t make it. I also rang Paula Hammond and she hasn’t responded yet.
Ref the comms below when it says Tony doesn’t want it on the agenda, does that mean of the meeting or he doesn’t want us to do the interview at all?

Cllr Hassall,
I have been working on trying to bring 6 Towns Radio round to being more positive and it appears to be working. has parted company with because he feels is too “intellectual” and has started to rely on us more and more to help him with his debate programmes on Wednesday nights.
Cllrs Shotton, Platt and Pender have all done programmes and have all been positive about their reception and at 6 Towns has been nothing but complementary about our willingness to get involved in community broadcasting.
can be challenging at times, but it is better to engage with him than allow those less enthusiastic and positive to set the agenda. The Leader has backed this approach. has 2,500 Twitter followers too – so he positive views of our engagement with him feed out to the wider community.
Next week’s Wednesday night debate is all about “Problem Families” and social dislocation. Can you do this one. tells me the County aren’t playing ball with him, so we have the field to ourselves.
I am busy trying to get a briefing on what we are doing on this front from Ruth Jenkins – and perhaps someone who has been through the system and come out well motivated with their life turned round. I was hoping she might be able to provide an expert to support you.
I am also contacting the Uni to get an academic in to provide another insight.
If we can get someone from the charity world too that would be great.
Best wishes

For Immediate Release
Date: 26 September 2013
Staffordshire Personalities Wanted for Radio Series
I'm presently seeking new and exciting Staffordshire personalities to interview for my second series of 'Music of My Years' for Cre8 Radio for 2014.
In the first series we had the legendary broadcaster, Doug Wood, who was celebrating 30 years as a radio presenter broadcasting to Staffordshire and Cheshire via Signal Radio, Moorelands Radio and beyond; local artist, Tracy Henham, the former actor and TV star and now the Director for Media and performing Arts at SOT College, Charles Bartholomew and the indispensible, robust Burslem ceramicist, Norman Tempest, Md of Royal Stafford.
As well as choosing their five favourite records, talking about their life and work, Guests get to pick an object - living or dead - which they feel best sums up their life.
In the past we've had an oak tree courtesy of Charles; a painting of the Radio Caroline ship thanks to Doug, a rather moving and incredibly powerful poem from Tracy and a famous teapot as featured in Sex In The City from Norman.
For this new series, I've decided to introduce one or two new features.
The first has to do with the programme duration. Instead of 30 minutes, it was suggested I extend it to 60 minutes with more music and lots more chat.
To this end, rather than the customary five tracks, I've now upped that to 7.
The second new and intriguing feature I've introduced is the 'picture Reminds me' section, in which guests - if they so wish - are invited to bring along a few of their favourite personal photographs from their album archives marking memorable moments in their lives to share with listeners.
Who will it be choosing their tracks and picking their objects next time round? Cast your votes and keep spreading the word and who knows...

Cllr Platt,
6 Towns next debate next Wednesday 9th, is about recycling. They are going to have Newcastle BC in to ask them about the number of containers they have – a record for the UK. wants to talk about recycling and waste – might be a good opportunity to talk about the whole energy mix, plastic bag taxes proposed by government, issues of tipping and caring for the streets, energy associated with making good use of waste materials etc.
Are you available?
Regards
Jeremy

From: Jeremy M. Herbert Sent: 01 October 2013 18:20 To: Subject: Interviews
I’ve been in touch with Neil Dawson of FoE and am awaiting his answer about recycling. I’ve also contacted Andy Platt. I reckon you could also get someone out from one of the furniture recycling operations. I’ll have a dig around on that front when I return.
Also worth talking about the plastic bag charge that is being proposed.
Issues you could also include in this broadcast are:
• Biodigestion of food waste to create energy. • Composting. • Landfill v energy from waste recycling. • Does recycling have to mean sending stuff to China – isn’t this worse in the lifecycle of energy use? • Why can’t we recycle here in Britain? How about getting someone in from a recycling company? • Food waste from supermarkets – why do we throw so much away in the first place? • Refunds on bottles – why can’t we organise that again? • Consumer society – can we square mass consumerism and litter, waste etc • The throw away society – is this something bigger about how we live our lives. • McDonalds and fast food nation. Take away lifestyles. Does this cheapen our high streets – what should we do about it? • Encouraging families to cook and eat at home – links to health and social stability etc. • The business context – invite someone from the Chamber of Trade. • Dumping of waste/fly tipping – links to organised crime – fines and prosecutions? Put them in the stocks?
Other programme ideas.
1. Business – brining in LEP reps, progressive business people, business academics and of course a cabinet member. Issues – try to focus on companies that are thriving – hopes for new business, regeneration aspiration – reality checks. 2. Education – perhaps hosted at one of our new revamped schools or the University. Making the links between investing in education, schools, links to business – students with great ideas etc. The next generation their hopes and aspirations. A youth show here perhaps. Where do they see the future for the city. 3. The natural world – Stoke as a great place to live – our parks, green spaces, biodiversity, the Village Show and allotments, community groups, gardening competition and Chelsea, cycling and transport. Green companies and new business opportunities – hence link into other areas. Perhaps at Burslem Park. 4. Community and housing – rebuilding the community spirit, neighbourhoods – community groups, housing associations, architecture experts – local community centre where we are investing in homes. Housing associations – the £1 house (we have some new residents who would appear I am sure) – how do we change the way we live in our streets. What should the future of housing be. 5. Transport issues – HS2, parking, cycle lanes – god that will always get people going. Links to air pollution, congestion and the economy, the future of economic growth. Funding for major infrastructure – where is it going to come from. Maintaining the existing infrastructure – potholes etc.
1
Other ideas:
• Tradition – how important is it. Should we look back to the glory days of stoke – or should we look forward and deal with the challenges of the future – are they mutually exclusive. Or can we learn from the past. Does Stoke have a problem with always dwelling in the past? Can you be proud and forward looking at the same time? Is local identity a strength or a weakness? Have things changed so much that we need to start again? That will get them arguing. Take an example – the mines – can we bring them back? • Banking – controversial or what? Do we need small local players – the Credit Unions. (Just met the Director of the local Credit Union and he is keen). Building societies and carpet bagging, independence of banks, ethics and banking. Should we go local with LETS schemes – local currency. Stoke Pound for example? Or is the free market inviolable. Interest rates – if you are saving it’s a big issue right now. • Happiness – what is it? Does it depend on money. GDP or Gross National Happiness. What makes us happy? Religion – bring in some religious speakers. Life’s purpose – perhaps have someone in to talk about humanism. • Food – interview some of the areas restaurateurs – is it good enough. Brewers (the great staffs tradition)and local food producers. Local food and economic impact. Farmers NFU. How do we get kids into food and farming (Someone from the NFU, Reaseheath, the college). Blessed are the cheese makers. High tech v craft production. • New technology – how is it helping – broadband business and new communities – but how is it damaging – porn, isolation and hate mail. How do we control it for the benefit of society – or is this a case where freedom comes first. Computers in schools. Social exclusion for the elderly etc. Big business and big computer contracts with Government. Not really a city council issue but a big issues for everyone. • Culture – is the area producing the great artists of the future. How should the arts be funded. Newcastle Vic. Local art galleries. Moorcrofts and the traditional arts. New artists – the Uni. Musicians and the role of the creative arts in the night time economy. Get someone on playing live on 6 Towns. State support of philanthropy for the arts.
That should give you a few ideas.
Cheers
Jeremy

MP: Councils have no excuse for potholes Robert Goodwill, the roads minister, has said that councils have "no excuse" for failing to fill in dangerous potholes on Britain's roads. He said that local councils "have a responsibility to ensure that the road is safe and operational" and added that the Government has provided £3.4bn to local highway authorities from 2011 to 2015, specifically for highways maintenance. "We have given them the tools to do the job. If they use the money wisely they can get ahead of the curve in dealing with potholes," he stated. A spokesman for the LGA said in response: "Decades of underfunding, severe winters and recent widespread flooding has left large swathes of our roads in disrepair with many councils struggling with a £10bn repair backlog and only able to patch up a deteriorating network. Councils need increased and consistent funding to invest in the widespread resurfacing projects which our road network desperately needs if we're to see a long-term improvement." 1 Hello my name is I present the Community Focus Show on 6 Towns Radio. We are a community radio station who have just gained our trial FM status. I aim to deliver knowledge and advise throughout Stoke On Trent about local Charitable and non Charitable Organisations/Companies.
. Your friend Ian Mclackland came and gave a talk on Anti Social Behaviour to our Cadets. It was informative and highlighted many points.
As a Community show I feel our listeners would benefit from a talk from yourself. So many people especially the elderly suffer in silence because they are scared to speak out or infact arent certain who to turn to for help.
I sincerely hope you can join me on my show.
Kind regards

I had a discussion with one of the producers of the Stoke-on-Trent Duck (I presume you have seen this publication?) https://www.stokeontrentduck.co.uk/issue-2/front-page.html
I pointed out to that the article on the Wedgwood Big House was one-sided and that the issue was in dispute and that it was not correct to simply claim that the problem was caused by the pavement.
1
He agreed to put in a piece from us to correct the misinformation and then we went on to talk about the general tendency to negativity and the need for a much more positive approach to bring everyone together to promote the amazing strengths of our city.
He was generally in approval and was very interested in the future of Ceramica.
I think there is a real opportunity for us to send over positive feeds to the Stoke-on-Trent Duck facebook page and for their web and printed magazine. Perhaps even take out some advertising with them when we want to promote specific events.
While this sort of community publication is small it has a significant impact in terms of forming local opinion and I think we should make every effort to provide them with material which generates a more optimistic outlook about the future for the city.
I know the plans for Ceramica with the Academy are still at an earlt stage but could this give us a chance to provide some positive news and comment for the Duck?
Regards
Jremy

Thanks Lisa, unfortunately I am out all day tomorrow and Wednesday, working on the latest Staffordshire Hoard announcements in Birmingham. I can do a phone call any time this afternoon, if possible. As a separate point, I’m going to be unable to attend the comms update on Wed evening, as I will not be back from Brum in time. Please could you accept my apologies? Best wishes, Andrew.

Hi everyone
Meeting with arranged for Wednesday at 12.00noon in
I’ve spoken to Cllr Pervez re: a briefing – as per your advice. However, given existing commitments, I’m not sure we are going to be able to do this face-to-face.
Michelle/Andrew – can we discuss a telephone conversation between you and Cllr Pervez tomorrow please? We might just need to put you in a room with a speaker phone! We could always use Leader’s office. Let me know when you’re free.
Kind regards
Lisa

Thanks Lisa, Michelle, I have just had a long conversation with the Macclesfield Express! One of friends has put her in touch with the newspaper, and now they are looking to run a story. This goes on, and on and on. I would very strongly urge that a briefing takes place. This lady, while undoubtedly acting in what she sees is the interests of her daughter, is creating a massive social media and wider media storm that is hugely discrediting what is an excellent service at Dimensions. She will use whatever is discussed with cllr Pervez to further her campaign – cllr Pervez needs to be very mindful of what he says, and importantly not give her ground to further her arguments where none is needed to be given. Thanks, Andrew.

From: Paul Shotton Sent: 13 April 2014 11:33 To: Cc: '[email protected]'; Karen Clarke Subject: RE: Fenton's Elected Representatives letter to the Sentinel
Dear Editor
I reply to letter to the Sentinel. seems to have totally misunderstood the situation. To make matters clear, MP Rob Flello, Cllr Karen Clarke and myself were not invited to the recent Landowners Day meeting at Fenton Town Hall, it is not correct to assume that as elected representatives we have a free reign to attend every single meeting or event held by every Group in our areas without an invite, and indeed would be very poor etiquette to do so.
We have not claimed, nor would we claim that the event was a political stunt, what we did claim was that letter to the Sentinel critiscing our non attendance was politicising the event.
Were we invited and free, we would have attended, all three of us are supportive of the Campaign to return Fenton Town Hall to it's rightful owners the people of the City of Stoke on Trent.
Indeed there is a motion submitted by Cllr Clarke and seconded myself to the City Council to this effect that will be presented at the Council's July meeting, additionally we have written to the MOJ the owners of the building and the Secretary of State for Justice Chris Grayling requesting the buildings return, free of charge to the City.
Rob Flello has also raised this matter in Parliament.
We have attended meetings of Fenton Community Association and all expressed our support for the save the Town Hall Campaign, as a Fentonian I personally have several relatives that are named on the war memorials inside Fenton Town Hall, and I am proud to publicly state that I would lie in front of the bulldozers should the building ever be threatened with demolition and that I will do whatever I can go protect what I think is the most beautiful Square in the city, and to ensure that there is continued public access to these memorials to the brave people of Fenton who made the ultimate sacrifice for their Country.
Regards
Cllr Paul Shotton

Dear Editor, 1
(copies sent to R. Flello, K. Clarke, P. Shotton)
I was amazed to see the current Labour group responsible for Fenton (Rob Flello our MP, with councillor Paul Shotton, councillor Karen Clarke (and Rob’s partner) ) writing to say they weren’t made aware of events in Fenton and claiming it to be a political stunt.
My first point is why they claim not have have been aware of the event and feel they weren't invited?
To the best of my knowledge the event was organised by the Friends of Fenton Town Hall group who distributed flyers to everyone in the town, had articles in/on local media outlets including The Sentinel, Radio Stoke and 6 Towns Radio. The article in the Sentinel said "They are now urging families to lay tributes outside the building to mark Lando wners Day, which honours those soldiers whose only claim on death was the land where they fell.” That surely is an invite to everyone!
It was also mentioned widely on social media including on a group that Paul Shotton has commented in.
Is it because non of them live in the ward that this is an issue for them? You would have to have your ears, eyes and mouth shut not to know what is happening in your own wards.
My second point is why they feel that the event was a political stunt. I know the people who were in attendance and they came from many political backgrounds and beliefs.
My conclusion is that these representatives of the people of Fenton are clearly not in touch with their electorate nor know what is happening in the town that they are paid to represent. They are far from pro-active and my guess is that they feel threatened because the people of Fenton have decided enough is enough, we are tired of being forgotten, if our leaders won’t show any leadership, then we will.
2 My question to all of the people named above is shouldn’t you all be LEADING this effort by the people of Fenton to save our buildings? You have all been asked to get involved in the campaign on many occasions.
Is it because they value their political ties to the Labour Party too closely and fear being cut loose by speaking out and being seen to have a different view? Do they attach more value to this, than to the people that they are supposed to represent? Why was this letter written, was it pressure from the controlling labour group? Why don’t they independently express their personal views, not tow the party line. At an early meeting of the Save Fenton Town Hall group Councillor Shotton said he would lie in front of the bulldozers if it ever got to that stage, why hasn’t he said this publicly?
We elected you, you should take our views on board and represent us. I would also like to ask each of them to tell us how much time they actually spend in their ward?
Was their letter a political stunt? Why could they not write and express their own views? I will leave you to decide.....
Kind Regards,

o William Davies tagged you in a post Now the deputy leader of StokeonTrent CityCouncil has been suspended for underhand activity will the HS2 petition he started be withdrawn? Are all the signatories on there genuine or made up. I suggest you can't just check against electoral role the council would have to contact each one individually on the list and ask, did you sign this?

Jonathan Bradshaw I think it's a bit sad really, the standard of intellect and experience of stoke on Trent councillors has been shown to be lacking. There should be some sort of competence requirement before standing for an important public position. The leadership has been shown to be unfit and the people of stoke on Trent should be held accountable for allowing this rubbish to represent them.

Dawn Jutton Unsurprising! Politicians of all persuasions and levels are getting desperate. Maybe they should simply reassess what made them get into politics and show integrity and passion for the issues not power and personal gain? Demonstrating caring for the people they are supposed to represent rather than justifying unjustifiable actions may get more votes.
