They started a school, traveled to West Virginia to build houses for Habitat for Humanity, created a professional show for a gallery, wrote public policy, not to mention all the individualized projects they have embarked on. So, how could they share a slice of that experience? It was a daunting task but in the last weeks of their high school careers, we asked them to write their “final words.” These words would serve as a farewell to the school, their community and as a keepsake of all they take with them on their next journey. -

Creolizing Contradance in the Caribbean
Peter Manuel 1 / Introduction Contradance and Quadrille Culture in the Caribbean region as linguistically, ethnically, and culturally diverse as the Carib- bean has never lent itself to being epitomized by a single music or dance A genre, be it rumba or reggae. Nevertheless, in the nineteenth century a set of contradance and quadrille variants flourished so extensively throughout the Caribbean Basin that they enjoyed a kind of predominance, as a common cultural medium through which melodies, rhythms, dance figures, and per- formers all circulated, both between islands and between social groups within a given island. Hence, if the latter twentieth century in the region came to be the age of Afro-Caribbean popular music and dance, the nineteenth century can in many respects be characterized as the era of the contradance and qua- drille. Further, the quadrille retains much vigor in the Caribbean, and many aspects of modern Latin popular dance and music can be traced ultimately to the Cuban contradanza and Puerto Rican danza. Caribbean scholars, recognizing the importance of the contradance and quadrille complex, have produced several erudite studies of some of these genres, especially as flourishing in the Spanish Caribbean. However, these have tended to be narrowly focused in scope, and, even taken collectively, they fail to provide the panregional perspective that is so clearly needed even to comprehend a single genre in its broader context. Further, most of these pub- lications are scattered in diverse obscure and ephemeral journals or consist of limited-edition books that are scarcely available in their country of origin, not to mention elsewhere.1 Some of the most outstanding studies of individual genres or regions display what might seem to be a surprising lack of familiar- ity with relevant publications produced elsewhere, due not to any incuriosity on the part of authors but to the poor dissemination of works within (as well as 2 Peter Manuel outside) the Caribbean. -
Savoy and Regent Label Discography
Discography of the Savoy/Regent and Associated Labels Savoy was formed in Newark New Jersey in 1942 by Herman Lubinsky and Fred Mendelsohn. Lubinsky acquired Mendelsohn’s interest in June 1949. Mendelsohn continued as producer for years afterward. Savoy recorded jazz, R&B, blues, gospel and classical. The head of sales was Hy Siegel. Production was by Ralph Bass, Ozzie Cadena, Leroy Kirkland, Lee Magid, Fred Mendelsohn, Teddy Reig and Gus Statiras. The subsidiary Regent was extablished in 1948. Regent recorded the same types of music that Savoy did but later in its operation it became Savoy’s budget label. The Gospel label was formed in Newark NJ in 1958 and recorded and released gospel music. The Sharp label was formed in Newark NJ in 1959 and released R&B and gospel music. The Dee Gee label was started in Detroit Michigan in 1951 by Dizzy Gillespie and Divid Usher. Dee Gee recorded jazz, R&B, and popular music. The label was acquired by Savoy records in the late 1950’s and moved to Newark NJ. The Signal label was formed in 1956 by Jules Colomby, Harold Goldberg and Don Schlitten in New York City. The label recorded jazz and was acquired by Savoy in the late 1950’s. There were no releases on Signal after being bought by Savoy. The Savoy and associated label discography was compiled using our record collections, Schwann Catalogs from 1949 to 1982, a Phono-Log from 1963. Although Debussy frequently instructed his students to play his music exactly as written, his own recordings are rife with artistic liberties and interpretive freedom. -
Scots in the West Indies in the Colonial Period: a View from the Archives
SCOTTISH ARCHIVES 2016 Volume 22 © The Scottish Records Association Viewpoint Scots in the West Indies in the Colonial Period: A View from the Archives Stephen Mullen In the incipient historiography of Scotland and the West Indies in the colonial period, historians have adopted distinct methodologies and approaches to archival research. First, some have taken a metropolitan-based approach and used source material accordingly. For example, T. C. Smout’s early work on sugar houses and the development of Glasgow are classic cis-atlantic studies based on Scottish records such as port and customs records.1 Secondly, other historians have adopted a trans atlantic approach and utilised material generated and stored in institutions in both Great Britain and the Caribbean. Alan Karras’s pioneering book Sojourners in the Sun (1992) utilised material in the National Library of Scotland, National Records of Scotland (then the Scottish Records Office) as well as archival sources located in America and Jamaica.2 This strategy was followed by Douglas Hamilton in Scotland, the Caribbean and the Atlantic World, 1750–1820 (2005).3 Records revealing activities across the Atlantic world were generated in both Scotland and the Caribbean at the time. For example, the ledgers and journals of Alexander Houston & Co. – the premier Glasgow–West India firm before bankruptcy in 1805 – reveal much about mercantile practices in eighteenth- century Glasgow.4 Plantations records were also systematically generated in the West Indies to be sent back to Great Britain to absentee owners. The Stirling of Keir papers in Glasgow City Archives is one of Scotland’s most comprehensive collections related to Scots in eighteenth-century Jamaica. -

K. NARAYAN was born on October 10, 1906, in Madras, South India, and educated there and at Maharaja’s College in Mysore. His first novel, Swami and Friends (1935), and its successor, The Bachelor of Arts (1937), are both set in the fictional territory of Malgudi, of which John Updike wrote, “Few writers since Dickens can match the effect of colorful teeming that Narayan’s fictional city of Malgudi conveys; its population is as sharply chiseled as a temple frieze, and as endless, with always, one feels, more characters round the corner.” Narayan wrote many more novels set in Malgudi, including The English Teacher (1945), The Financial Expert (1952), and The Guide (1958), which won him the Sahitya Akademi (India’s National Academy of Letters) Award, his country’s highest honor. His collections of short fiction include A Horse and Two Goats, Malgudi Days, and Under the Banyan Tree. Graham Greene, Narayan’s friend and literary champion, said, “He has offered me a second home. Without him I could never have known what it is like to be Indian.” Narayan’s fiction earned him comparisons to the work of writers including Anton Chekhov, William Faulkner, O. -
