Video Description Recorded in the gallery of the North Shore Arts Association in East Gloucester, this video captures a lecture by local historian and Cape Ann Museum volunteer Mary Rhinelander McCarl in which she speaks about the late 19th century art colonies that flourished on Cape Ann. Drawn by the picturesque, accessible, and relatively inexpensive setting, many artists began to gather in Gloucester during The Beginnings of the Art Colonies of Cape Ann, 1875-1923 – VL33 – page 2 this time from several metropolitan areas while locally born artists thrived as well. McCarl discusses the careers of a few who were instrumental in establishing the arts-focused tenor of neighborhoods such as Annisquam and Rocky Neck. Her list includes both men and women and is presented within the context of evolving social and political influences. Answer: He was not successful in his attempt because the strap of a purse broke with the single tug the boy gave it from behind. But the boy’s weight and the weight of the purse combined caused him to lose his balance. So, instead of running away as he had hoped, the boy fell on his back on the sidewalk, and his legs flew up. 3.What did the woman do in response? Answer: The large woman simply turned around and kicked him directly to his blue-jeaned sitter. Then she reached down, picked the boy up by his shirt front, and shook him until his teeth rattled 4.Why did the boy not run away when the woman finally let go of his neck? Answer: The boy did not run away when the woman finally let go of his neck because he realized his mistakes and he was sorry for the action he had done. Moreover, he was given second chance by the woman when she took him at her apartment rather than to the police. 5.Why was the boy trying to steal? Hammond The University of Kansas t he challenges facing contemporary boys are complex, highlighting the importance of positive paternal influence for young men to achieve success. this study examines the father-son relationships of 10 prominent gifted men of achievement to identify factors influencing talent development. through biographical analysis, 6 significant themes were identified: unconditional belief in son, strong work ethic, encouragement and guidance, maintaining high expectations and fostering determination, pride in son’s accomplishments, and mutual admiration and respect. implications for parents and educators of high-achieving gifted males are discussed. “My father didn’t tell me how to live; he lived and let me watch him do it.” —Clarence Kelland (Lyons & Lyons, 2002, p. 44) It is a challenging time to be a boy in this country. At least that’s what finally made dad explode at Uncle Billy’s house. And dad, like ... never explodes. Especially at Uncle Billy. Uncle Billy is that really rich, old, great uncle that everybody wishes they could have. And we actually have him. Lucky us, except of course, there’s a catch. Uncle Billy is totally useless. Not that he’s useless. He’s, like, super successful and filthy rich, and if you ask (or don’t ask), he’s more than happy to tell you all about his first job and his second job and his third job and his first business and his second business and … you get the picture. To hear Uncle Billy tell it, he was working while he was still in diapers. Whatever. Like anybody cares. Because he doesn’t do what rich, lonely uncles are supposed to do - such as adopt and lavish me with all the good things in life. Okay, maybe he’s not that lonely. He’s got Aunt Rose to keep him company and listen to how wonderful he is. And truthfully, I wouldn’t be all that good at that. But still. I’d listen if I thought it was worth my while. Which it’s totally not. As he likes to point out, the only valuables I’ll ever be getting from his will are jewels of advice. -

Patriot Read Rising 10th grade “An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest.” -Benjamin Franklin Heritage Christian School Patriot Summer Reading Program The purpose of summer reading is to expose our students to good books – books that will enrich the mind, character and spirit of HCS students during summer break. Our goal is to encourage a lifelong love for reading. Many of these books can be found in Mrs. Brown’s classroom, and the HCS library has many of them as well. Students entering 10th grade need to choose one book from the list below to read over the summer. After reading the books, the student should complete the book report following the instructions given (see attached). Parents should sign the form which will be given to the tenth grade teacher on the FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL. The reports will be graded and will be the student’s first English test grade. Deduction of points will be made each day it is late. Any student not completing the reports after one week will receive a zero. Life in Two City-States Athens and Sparta 27.1 Introduction In Chapter 26, you learned that ancient Greece was a collection of city- states, each with its own government. In this chapter, you will learn about two of the most important Greek city-states, Athens and Sparta. They not only had different forms of government, but very different ways of life. Athens was a walled city near the sea. Nearby, ships came and went from a busy port. Inside the city walls, master potters and sculptors labored in work- shops. Wealthy people and their slaves strolled through the marketplace. Often the city's citizens (free men) gathered to loudly debate the issues of the day. Sparta was located in a farming area on a plain. No walls surrounded the city. Its buildings were simple and plain compared to those of Athens. Even the clothing of the people in the streets was drab. Columns of soldiers tramped through the streets, with fierce expressions behind their bronze helmets. Even a casual visitor could see that Athens and Sparta were very different. Let's take a closer look at the way people lived in these two city-states.
