    From: Kate Clifford Larson, Ph.D. To: Cherie Butler, Superintendant, HATU; Aiden Smith, OAH Date: January 15, 2014 RE: HATU National Monument Scholars Roundtable White Paper Response In November 2013, the National Park Service invited five scholars to Dorchester County, Maryland to participate in a roundtable discussion about interpretation of Harriet Tubman’s life and legacy for the newly established Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Monument.1 Joining the scholars and NPS professionals, were representatives from Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge (BNWR), Maryland Department of Economic Development, the Organization of American Historians, local residents, and Haley Sharpe Design, the exhibit design firm. Initially guided by a set of questions framed by four themes - Building Communities, Anchoring the Spirit, Paths Toward Freedom and Resistance, and Sharing Knowledge - the discussion drew from the specialties and skill sets of each scholar, complimenting and enhancing each other’s ideas and perspectives while examining the core elements of Tubman’s life and legacy. One of the goals of the roundtable was to enhance NPS partnerships and collaborations with stakeholders and historians to ensure the incorporation of varied perspectives and views into innovative and challenging interpretation at NPS sites, particularly sites associated with controversial and emotionally charged subjects such as slavery and freedom at the Tubman National Monument.     Films or Film Series’ About the Abolitionists Suitable for High School and Adults During Black History Month - February Here is a list of films, both documentary films and contemporary movies, which can be used to discuss the abolitionist movement and the Underground Railroad. The animated films are especially suitable for children. “American Experience: The Abolitionists” This is a three hour (3 part) PBS series which can be watched by downloading from its online location. It can also be broken into sections if dealing with particular people or situations. It was first broadcast in 2013 and is available for purchase as a DVD. A teacher’s guide can be downloaded from the website and is a valuable resource. The documentary reveals how Abolitionist allies Frederick Douglass, William Lloyd Garrison, Harriet Beecher Stowe, John Brown and Angelina Grimké turned a despised fringe movement against chattel slavery into a force that literally changed the nation. “Amazing Grace” – 2006 – “Amazing Grace” is a biographical movie about the Abolitionist William Wilberforce's campaign against the slave trade in the British Empire,[7] and features the role of John Newton, the writer of the hymn Amazing Grace, in Wilberforce's campaign. “Amazing Grace” with Bill Moyers. This documentary first released in 1994 on VHS focuses on the popular hymn written by John Newton. It features interviews with Judy Collins, Johnny Cash, Jessye Norman and The Boys Choir of Harlem. In talking about the hymn and what it means to different celebrities, the story of John Newton is told simply and directly. Amistad (1997) Steven Spielberg directs and Morgan Freeman stars in this epic film based on the true story of the 1839 mutiny aboard an African slave ship headed to the United States from Cuba and the abolitionist lawyer—John Quincy Adams—who advocated for the rebels' freedom.

    Challenged Books and Magazines List Updated February 2012 This selective list provides information on numerous books and some magazines and newspapers that have been challenged in the past decades. Each challenge sought to limit public access to these publications in schools, libraries and elsewhere. Some challenges were upheld; others were rejected. We have tried to update our research on unresolved challenges. Because some challenges are dismissed, the publications remain on library shelves or curriculum lists. We think it is worthwhile to include such instances because the effect of a controversy over publications can spread even though the would-be banners lose. A book or magazine with a controversial reputation can be quietly dropped from reading lists and curricula. This interference can be most insidious—quiet acquiescence to the scare tactics that would-be censors know how to employ. Because organizations and community groups that ask for book and magazine bans usually want to avoid public controversies, it is often difficult to discover why challenges are launched or what becomes of them.
