Religions of foreign origin have shaped Chinese cultural history much stronger than generally assumed and continue to have impact on Chinese society in varying regional degrees. The essays collected in the present volume put a special emphasis on these “foreign” and less familiar aspects of Chinese religion. Apart from an introductory article on Daoism (the BKGA 85 BKGA Religion in China prototypical autochthonous religion of China), the volume reflects China’s encounter with religions of the so-called Western Regions, starting from the adoption of Indian Buddhism to early settlements of religious minorities from the Near East (Islam, Christianity, and Judaism) and the early modern debates between Confucians and Christian missionaries. Contemporary Major Concepts and religious minorities, their specific social problems, and their regional diversities are discussed in the cases of Abrahamitic traditions in China. The volume therefore contributes to our understanding of most recent and Minority Positions potentially violent religio-political phenomena such as, for instance, Islamist movements in the People’s Republic of China. DOI: 10.4312/as.2019.7.2.47-86 47 Transmission of Han Pictorial Motifs into the Western Periphery: Fuxi and Nüwa in the Wei-Jin Mural Tombs in the Hexi Corridor*8 ∗∗ Nataša VAMPELJ SUHADOLNIK 9 Abstract This paper examines the ways in which Fuxi and Nüwa were depicted inside the mu- ral tombs of the Wei-Jin dynasties along the Hexi Corridor as compared to their Han counterparts from the Central Plains. Pursuing typological, stylistic, and iconographic approaches, it investigates how the western periphery inherited the knowledge of the divine pair and further discusses the transition of the iconographic and stylistic design of both deities from the Han (206 BCE–220 CE) to the Wei and Western Jin dynasties (220–316). Furthermore, examining the origins of the migrants on the basis of historical records, it also attempts to discuss the possible regional connections and migration from different parts of the Chinese central territory to the western periphery. On the basis of these approaches, it reveals that the depiction of Fuxi and Nüwa in Gansu area was modelled on the Shandong regional pattern and further evolved into a unique pattern formed by an iconographic conglomeration of all attributes and other physical characteristics. Accordingly, the Shandong region style not only spread to surrounding areas in the central Chinese territory but even to the more remote border regions, where it became the model for funerary art motifs. Kleinherenbrink's Externality Thesis and Deleuze's Machine Ontology
Cosmos and History: The Journal of Natural and Social Philosophy, vol. 16, no. 1, 2020 REVIEW ARTICLE AGAINST THE VIRTUAL: KLEINHERENBRINK’S EXTERNALITY THESIS AND DELEUZE’S MACHINE ONTOLOGY Ekin Erkan ABSTRACT: Reviewing Arjen Kleinherenbrink’s recent book, Against Continuity: Gilles Deleuze's Speculative Realism (2019), this paper undertakes a detailed review of Kleinherenbrink’s fourfold “externality thesis” vis-à-vis Deleuze’s machine ontology. Reading Deleuze as a philosopher of the actual, this paper renders Deleuzean syntheses as passive contemplations, pulling other (passive) entities into an (active) experience and designating relations as expressed through contraction. In addition to reviewing Kleinherenbrink’s book (which argues that the machine ontology is a guiding current that emerges in Deleuze’s work after Difference and Repetition) alongside much of Deleuze’s oeuvre, we relate and juxtapose Deleuze’s machine ontology to positions concerning externality held by a host of speculative realists. Arguing that the machine ontology has its own account of interaction, change, and novelty, we ultimately set to prove that positing an ontological “cut” on behalf of the virtual realm is unwarranted because, unlike the realm of actualities, it is extraneous to the structure of becoming—that is, because it cannot be homogenous, any theory of change vis-à-vis the virtual makes it impossible to explain how and why qualitatively different actualities are produced. While “the problem of myth for Western philosophers is a problem of interpreting the meaning of myths and the phenomenon of myth-making” as Allan remarks, “the problem of myth for the sinologist is one of finding any myths to interpret and of explaining why there are so few.” (Allen, 1991: 19) To decode why white jade enjoys a prominent position in the Chinese culture, the underlying conceptual structure and unique culture genes should be investigated. -

By N. Harry Rothschild. New York: Columbia Univ. Press, 2015. xxii + 357 pp. This elegant volume is the fifth in the budding Sheng Yen Series in Chinese Bud- dhist Studies at Columbia Univ. Press, whose aim is to host pioneering research “in the field of Chinese Buddhism.”1 N. Harry Rothschild, however, has no doubt far exceeded such a brief. His extensive exploration of the female ideological models of Wu Zhao 武曌 (posthumously Wu Zetian 武則天, r. 690-705), the only woman to successfully claim the imperial dignity in China’s long history, does pause to con- sider the well-known role Buddhism had in this remarkable feat, but only at the end of a long gallery of feminine paragons, drawn from a much wider spectrum of traditions. The book’s four parts roughly match the conventional rubrics of China’s elusive religion as a whole: thus the shapeless realm of myth and folklore in Part 1 is fol- lowed by Confucianism with its exemplary mothers in Part 2, and before the final section on the devīs of Buddhism, Part 3 deals with Taoism and its goddesses. -

In the first part, Bland’s critical race theory of jazz is outlined through the dialogue provided By the protagonist Alex in The Cry of Jazz demonstrating the dialectical Hegelianism of Bland’s analysis. Bland’s theory of jazz is sifted through a reading of Deleuze’s Difference and Repetition as a critique of Hegelianism. Through an elaBoration of jazz theory, the Deleuzian concepts of difference and repetition develop further Bland’s jazz theory leading to the death of jazz and the potential Becoming of a new Amer- ica. The survival of the spirit of jazz after death is demonstrated through the Body without organs. This paper introduces and comments on Professor Zheng Kai’s new book from four aspects, including the concept of Daoist political philosophy, the political philosophy of Laozi and Zhuangzi, the political philosophy of Huang Laodao, and the comparison between the political philosophy of Confucianism and Daoism. While speak highly of the systematic integration of the study in Daoist political philosophy, I also point out the shortcomings of this book. Keywords: Daoist political philosophy, Laozi, Zhuangzi, Huanglao, Zheng Kai Due to the development of Western political philosophy, how to explore Chinese political philosophy has become a new problem for Chinese philosophers nowadays. They, in recent decades, mainly explore the Confucian political philosophy in the context of Western philosophy, which results in ignoring the Daoist ideas on political issues relatively. Hence, Dr. ZHENG Kai 鄭開, the philosopher devoting to the study of Daoism and its political philosophy, points out that there are aspecial set of concepts, clear theoretical boundaries and unique theoretical characteristics in the political philosophy of Daoism. Daoist political philosophy, consequently, has been deemed to be a strict and real political philosophy by the author. This monograph, consisting of twelve chapters and covering nearly all the important figures, concepts and issues, is the result of the author’s long-term research. -
