' TEXAS ACADEMIC SKILLS PROGRAM AND MOUNTAIN VIEW COLLEGE In 1987, the Texas Legislature passed House Bill 2182. This bill, effective w~h the 1989 Fall Semester, requires that all Texas public college and university students be tested for reading, wr~ing and mathematics skills. This legislation applies to students enrolling in the Dallas Commun~y Colleges - Brookhaven, Cedar Valley, Easlfield, EI Centro, Mountain View, North Lake and Richland. Q. What la the Texaa Academic Skills Program (TASP)? A. TASP is a diagnostic testing program to assess the academic skills of students entering Texas public collages an,d universities. It is dasigned to determine n students have the reading, wr~ing and math skills necessary to succeed in college courses. The results of the test point to specnic academic strengths and weaknesses and help advisors and counselors place students in courses in which they can do well and davelop the necessary skills for college success. II students score poorly in one or more areas of the tast, TASP requires them to immediately participate in appropriate remediation until all sections of the test are passed. Q. Who must take the TASP test? A. All Texas publiC collage students must take TASP e~her before or during the semestar of completing nine (9) college-level cradit hours. Such scores must be reported to the college prior to the next registration. ALL students planning to become a certnied teacher in Texas MUST take and pass TASP. Q. Are there any exemptlona from taking the TASP tllSt? • A. Students who completed at least three (3) cred~ hours of college-level wor\( prior to the 1989 Fall Semester will be exempt from taking TASP. Courses that count toward this exemption are those taken atthe,DCCCD or other regionally- accred~ed collages or univers~ies and which will count toward graduation; also, various credit-by-exam programs taken prior to Fall 1989 will result in an exemption. Students enrolled in a DeccD academic program leading to a certnicale may receive a waiver from TASP. Students who score at or above 90 percent correct on all sections of the ex~ level high school exam- ination (TAAS), or score exceptionally high on the SAT or ACT examinations may be eligible for TASP exemption. The following DCCCD courses or their equivalents will NOT count toward the three hours: Any course numbered below 100, Art 199, Collage Learning Skills 100, Developmental Communications 120, Human Development 100, Human Development 110, Library Skills 101, Music 199, and Theatre 199. Q. Must a student take TASP prior to entering a DCCCD collage? A. No, it is not necessary that a student take TASP prior to enrolling. However, DCCCD students musllake TASP prior to completing nine (9) hours of collage-level courses and report scores prior to the next registration. In most cases, three courses will equal nine hours of cred~. ALL PERFORMANCE GRADES (A - F) earned in courses will count toward the nine hours of credit. Q. If students must take TASP by the complatlon of their ninth credit hour, doss this mean they must pass TASP by that same time? A. No, students are required only to take TASP prior to completing their ninth cred~ hour and report scores before their next OCCCD registration. II students do not "pass" a section or sections of TASP, they will be immediately mandated into remediation. Students must pass all sections 01 TASP before they can be awarded a degree from the DCCCD. Students who transfer to a four-year state college or univers~ will not be allowed to take junior or senior courses until they have passed all sections of TASP. Q. How and when will the TASP test be given? A. The three-part (reading, wr~ing and mathematics) test will be given on a statewide basis at designated testing sites. Each DCCCD college is a test s~e. During 1993, the test will be given on June 26, July 24, September 18 and November 13, During 1994, the test dates are February 26, April 23, June 18 and July 23. TASP registration materials are available in the Counseling Centers and/or Testing Centers of each of the DeccD colleges. Q. What Is the cost 01 the TASP tast? Is there a study guide available? A. The cost lor the total test is $26. An Official TASP Study Guide can be purchased in DCCCD College Book Stores or be ordered by wr~ing to TASP Project, P.O. Box 1403478, Austin, Texas, 78714-0347. Study Guides ara available for refarence use in each of the DCCCO college libraries. Q. How will TASP affect students planning to attend a DCCCD collage? A_ Studants planning to attend a DCCCD collega will continue to complete the usual steps for enrollment. TASP scores should be reported after baing admitted by those who have taken TASP. However, for students who have not taken TASP, tha col- lege will indicate whether or not they should take the DCCCD's assessment test. Then, before completing their ninth credlt hour, students must take the TASP test and report their scores before their next registration. Q. Are students transferring Into the DCCCD required to taka TASP? , A. Unless transfer students qualny for one of the exemptions discussed above, they are required to take TASP. Transfer students from another Texas public collegeluniver.s~ are expected to take TASP no later than the semester of enrollment in nine college-level aed~hours, and the hours earned at other Texas public colleges ARE USED in computing the nine credll hours. Such students must report scores before registering for college-level hours in the DCCCO. Hours earned at private or out-of-state colleges/universities ARE used in computing such nine cred~ hours. If transfer students from such insntutions have already exceeded nine hours, they must take :rASP !,,~hin their first semester of enrollment in the DCCCD. • ,',-r' .. • If you would like more Information on the Texas Aclidemlc Skills Program, plaase contact the college's Counseling Center. ..,., ,190 " ,..' :'.
