Phases of the Moon By Patti Hutchison 1 Was there a full moon last night? Some people believe that a full moon affects people's behavior. Whether that is true or not, the moon does go through phases. What causes the moon to appear differently throughout the month? 2 You know that the moon does not give off its own light. When we see the moon shining at night, we are actually seeing a reflection of the Sun's light. The part of the moon that we see shining (lunar phase) depends on the positions of the sun, moon, and the earth. 3 When the moon is between the earth and the sun, we can't see it. The sunlit side of the moon is facing away from us. The dark side is facing toward us. This phase is called the new moon. 4 As the moon moves along its orbit, the amount of reflected light we see increases. This is called waxing. At first, there is a waxing crescent. The moon looks like a fingernail in the sky. We only see a slice of it. 5 When it looks like half the moon is lighted, it is called the first quarter. Sounds confusing, doesn't it? The quarter moon doesn't refer to the shape of the moon. It is a point of time in the lunar month. There are four main phases to the lunar cycle. Four parts- four quarters. For each of these four phases, the moon has orbited one quarter of the way around the earth. -

The money will be used to purchase a projector and a laptop computer. With this equipment we will be able to give presentations at the observatory during public star parties and anywhere we are hosting a group interested in Astronomy. Our outreach will definitely be enhanced by this grant. The Messier Marathon is March 24 th , next Saturday, at TUVA. Be sure and read the article describing the marathon below and remember you do not have to stay all night. My first year I only made it until about 1:00 AM. You can also bring a cot to set up in the clubhouse and get some sleep. The marathon is definitely a challenge but the camaraderie is what really makes it worthwhile. Open Positions: We have two open positions I would like everyone to consider. The Group Director and the Newsletter Editor. Teresa and Jerry have each done a fantastic job in these positions respectively but unfortunately paid work has encroached and they are both having trouble finding time to fulfill their volunteer tasks the way they would like to. The Group Director is responsible for coordinating with groups that contact the club for special visits. -

Technical Memorandum To: Thaddeus Johnson, Jessica Kronenwetter, Kevin Work, William Chadwick, Brian Middleton, Kevin Ludlum, and Seth Iacangelo (NOAA/OSPO, GOES-R/MOST) From: Fangfang Yu, Xiangqian Wu and Xi Shao (NOAA/STAR) Subject: ABI Lunar Trending Image Collection Requirements in the Operational Period Date: 05/01/2018 Rev: Rev 2.0 Cc: Jon Fulbright (NOAA GOES-R/PRO) This technical memo lists the set of lunar trending requirements for the GOES-16 ABI operational period, which can be summarized as followed: Scan pattern: (1) the unclipped Moon can be scanned with either MESO1 or MESO2; and (2) the Moon should be located near the center of the MESO swath at the north-south direction for all the ABI bands. Location: (1) the Moon should appear within the ABI field of regard (FOR); (2) the center of the Moon should be at least 0.013 radians away from the Earth limb for all the ABI bands; and (3) the edge of the Moon should be at least 0.002 radians away from the MESO frame boundary at the east-west direction. Frequency per month: 2-4 trending events per lunar phase. Phase Angle Range: (1) the highest priority two lunar trending events shall have the smallest absolute phase angle as possible between Earth and Moon, but not less than 5.0 degrees. These two trending events shall be on opposite sides of the Earth. (2). The other two lunar trending events with relatively lower priority shall have an absolute phase angle as close as possible to 60 degrees between Earth and Moon, but not more than 90.0 degrees. -

The Night Sky of December 2013 Dr. Wayne Wooten Professor of Astronomy For December 2013, the Moon will be new on December 3. The first two weeks find the moon waxing in the evening sky. The waxing crescent moon passes 7.5 degrees north of Venus on December 5th. The moon is first quarter on December 9th, and will interfere with the peak of the Geminid Meteor Shower on December 14th. The Full Moon, the Long Night Moon, is on December 17th. The winter solstice occurs at 11:11 AM CST on December 21st, and winter begins on the shortest day of the year. The waning gibbous moon passes five degrees south of Jupiter in the evening of December 19th. The last quarter moon rises at midnight on Christmas Day and passes 4 degrees south of reddish Mars. The waning crescent passes a degree south of Saturn in the dawn on December 29th. While the naked eye, dark adapted by several minutes away from any bright lights, is a wonderful instrument to stare up into deep space, far beyond our own Milky Way, binoculars are better for spotting specific deep sky objects. The Quest for the Gegenschein Erwin Matys, Karoline Mrazek The sun’s counterglow — or gegenschein — is kind of a stargazers’ legend. Every amateur astronomer has heard about it, only a few of them have actually seen it, and even fewer were lucky enough to capture an image of this dim and ghostlike apparition. As a fellow observer put it: “The gegenschein is certainly not a GOTO-object.” Matter of fact, it isn’t an object at all. But let’s start from the beginning. What exactly is the gegenschein? It is widely known that the space between the planets isn’t empty. The plane of the solar system is filled with an enormous disk of small dust particles with sizes ranging from less than 1/1000 mm up to 1 mm. It is less commonly known that this interplanetary dust cloud is a highly dynamic structure. In contrast to conventional wisdom, it is not an aeon-old leftover from the solar system’s formation. This primordial dust is long gone. Today’s interplanetary dust is — in an astronomical sense of speaking — very young, only millions of years old. Most of the particles originate from quite recent incidents, like asteroid collisions. This is not the gegenschein. The picture shows the zodiacal light, which is closely related to the gegenschein. Here imaged from a rural site, the zodiacal light is a cone of light extending from the sun along the ecliptic, visible after dusk and before dawn. The gegenschein stems from the same dust cloud, but is much harder to detect or photograph. -

The principal point of this program was a detailed scientific analysis of the orbital and surface experiments data derived from Apollo missions 15, 16, and 17. One of the requirements of this program was the production of detailed photo base maps at a useable scale. NASA in conjunction with the Defense Mapping Agency (DMA) commenced a mapping program in early 1973 that would lead to the production of the necessary maps based on the need for certain areas. This paper is designed to present in outline form the neces- sary background informatiox or users to become familiar with the program. MAP FORMAT * The scale chosen for the project was 1:250,000 . The re- search being done required a scale that Principal Investigators (PI'S) using orbital photography could use, but would also serve PI'S doing surface photographic investigations. Each map sheet covers an area four degrees north/south by five degrees east/west. -
