After snagging several major stage roles in L.A., Newman joined GL in October, 1981. He left two years later to try his luck on the California film and television scene, but ended up returning to GL in 1986. He left again in January, 1991 for personal reasons, but was asked to return to the show in 1993. Newman did and has remained there ever since. The announcement was made live on NBC’s The Today Show.
