Living room: Sofa, fire place (Cheminée), big flat screen TV, (cable-TV), DVD-player, XBOX, Surround- Sound-Stereo, Telephone. Entrance: 2 wardrobes, cabinet holding cleaning stuff. Bathroom: Mirrored cabinet, lavatory, bathtub, hair dryer (3), bath towels. 2nd bathroom: Mirrored cabinet, shower, lavatory, bath towels. Master bedroom: King size bed with bed stands, cupboard, chest of drawers, bed side lamps, clock radio (Internet-radio, DAB+, CD-Player, 4 chairs. Double bedroom: 2 single beds, cupboard, Internet-radio and sofa. Single bedroom: Single bed, bed side table, Internet radio, cupboard, 2 chairs. Sauna: Use of the common sauna for the house (the sauna is downstairs, CHF 17.—per person extra). Ski room: Use of the ski room at the entrance to the house. Light green Chalet Strahlhorn Yellow: train station Pink: cable cars to the mountains Blue: nearest bus stops ("Luchre" "Wiestiboden" "Winkelmatten" Grey: nearest shopping and restaurant Description: At the train station take a taxi or the bus (direction „Winkelmatten“) to the bus stop "Wiestiboden". At the bus stop follow the small walkway in direction of the house „Silence“. This way leads you between the houses to the chalet Strahlhorn (appx. 2 minutes). Address: Châlet Strahlhorn, Appartment no7, Wiestibodenweg 70, CH-3920 Zermatt (Switzerland) Arriving: By car: At Täsch you will have to park your car and change to the shuttle train to Zermatt. The trains depart every 20 minutes till appx. 22.20 hours (night trains on Friday and Saturday). There are also several taxi services available at Täsch (24-H). By train: The train will take you directly to Zermatt. Zermatt is car free, only small electro cars and taxis are allowed. At the train station in Zermatt you take a taxi or the (electro-) bus to the bus stop “Wiestiboden. From this bus stop it’s a two minutes walk to the chalet strahlhorn. Balcony: The south balcony offers an overwhelming view direct to the Matterhorn. You will find chairs, a lawn seat and a table on the balcony. Cable cars: The cable car to the Klein Matterhorn is in walking distance (10 minutes). Alternatively you can hop on the bus at „Wiestiboden“ bus station (3 stops), the train to the Gornergrat and the underground cable car to „Sunnegga“ you reach best by bus (walking: app. 15-20 minutes). The bus is free of charge (included in the ski ticket). Bus: The bus time table is put up at the entrance to the house and in the apartment. Check-In: Check-in time is 3 o’clock pm on the day of arrival. You will have 3 (three) keys to the apartment. On your arrival you will find one key in the open compartment of the letter box. Check-Out: Check-out is at 09:30 am on the day of your departure. Please be sure to leave all 3 keys to the apartment. Drop one key, after locking the apartment, in the closed section of the mail box at the entrance to the house. Thank you. Doctor: There are several doctors in Zermatt. You will find a list of emergency numbers by the telephone. Dining-Out: Zermatt has many excellent Restaurants to dine out. You fill find a small folder with cards from good Restaurants, but it’s not complete. Make a reservation well in advance! DVD: A DVD-Recorder and over 100 films are at your disposal. Fire place: Before lighting the fire turn both black levers to the position „AUF“ (open), otherwise you will have all the smoke in the apartment. Close the glass panel for safety reasons. Garbage: The garbage bags can be deposited in the containers at the bus stops „Luchre“ or „Winkelmatten“ or any other garbage container. Only the orange garbage bags may be used House rules: The house rules (put up at the entrance) are to be obeyed. Nighttime peace is between 10.00 pm and 08.00 am. Pets are not allowed. Information: You can reach us for support/information through phone no +41 56 664 55 73. Shopping: The nearest grocery-store is near the bus station “Kirchbrücke”. To the village it takes about 10-15 minutes. A big grocery is in the shopping mall opposite the train station (COOP) and another one a little bit further up by the ice field (Migros). TV: The TV is cable connected (over 150 channels). PC: There is a laptop for free use available. To log in select the account Strahlhorn / Strahlhorn. The password is the same as for the WLAN. If you bring your own laptop, LAN (cable) and W-Lan is available. Ask us for the parameters (access code). Phone no: The phone no of the apartment is: +41 27 967 87 06. (Within Switzerland 027 967 87 06). Phone call charges are not included in the rent. Sauna: If you want to use the sauna, you have to inform the house-keeper in apartment no 5. He will give you the key to the sauna. CHF 17. — per person has to paid directly to him. Sledging: From the cable car station „Furi“ you can sledge down to „Winkelmatten“. This is a very easy run and can also be walked. Another run starts at the station “Rotenboden (train to the Gornergrat). This is an expert run and is much fun. Close to “Rotenboden” is the igloo hotel it’s nice to have a drink there). Skis, ski-boots: Skis and ski boots have to be deposited at the entrance to the house in the ski-room. Do not walk up the stairs with ski boots, it’s slippery. You can leave your skis also at the cable car stations. Skiing down: From Gornergrat and Klein Matterhorn you can ski very close to the chalet strahlhorn. Go direction „Furi“ and follow the slope to Zermatt along the street. Smoking: Only on the balcony. Surround-sound: The apartment is equipped with Bose Surround-Sound. Washing machine: The washing machine is in the basement and can be used when it is empty. You will need coins to operate it. Do not use the machine after 8 pm. There is also a tumble dryer. XBOX: The XBOX is below the TV on the left side. It has a live connection for online gaming but you need to use your own XBOX live account This information, as well as all the manuals, you will find in the apartment by the fire place, or in the internet on www.3920.net. So he must have realised the great contribution which he made personally to the greater prosperity of the people of Zermatt; they have long acknowledged this and the centenary was closely linked with Whymper"s name. But he could scarcely have foreseen the impact of to-day's mass affluence, of the rise of ski-ing and of universal publicity on the Alpine village he had known first over 100 years ago. We had all expected for some years that the centenary of the Matter­ horn ascent would be used by Zermatt for publicity on the grand scale. With the true mountain lovers' distaste for the prostitution of the Alps for commercial ends, many decided to keep away in 1965. But by doing so they missed a great occasion. For, although the Festival Week was unashamedly dedicated to Zermatt propaganda, the whole of the func­ tions were conducted in the very best of taste.     Beautifully efficient: the New Monte Rosa Hut The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich) and the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) are intending to set a new milestone in Alpine building with the New Monte Rosa Hut. The foundation stone was laid in August 2008. The mountain hut is one of many projects initiated to mark the 150th anniversary of the ETH Zurich. It is an ambitious building project for a forward-looking SAC hut on 2883 metres above sea level, sustainable in terms of energy and ecology. The SAC was quick to agree to the project. The internationally known Monte Rosa area in the Swiss Canton of Valais, framed by the Matterhorn and the Dufourspitze, was chosen for the planned hut. The existing hut there is in need of refurbishment, and so the project partners decided to replace it with the New Monte Rosa Hut. In the winter term 2003/2004, the Studio Monte Rosa at the ETH Zurich’s architecture and construction department was set up. Working over four terms, a total of over thirty students devised a design for the New Monte Rosa Hut. The student’s ideas developed into a feasible project with the support of professors and experts from various disciplines. So now a five-storey timber construction is to be built on stainless steel foundations thrusting down into the rock. Its metallically shimmering aluminium outer covering and unusual polygonal shape make it look like a rock crystal. The guest rooms can accommodate a total of 120 people, and the enchanting surroundings are effectively invited in as well, by a cascade of steps and a wide window facade.

    CA RUSSELL One Hundred Years Ago (with extracts from the Alpine Journal) (Plates 57-61) he fIrst attempt to ascend Mont Blanc in the twentieth centuryl was T made on Thursday, but without success. Even before the Pierre Pointue was reached the snow was found to be so deep that racquettes had to be used, while at the Grand Junction of the Glacier de Taconna progress was rendered very difficult from the same cause. On reaching Grands Mulets (10,007 feet), it was decided to give up the task of reaching the actual summit owing to the great depth of the snow and the intense cold, and signs ofwind. Moreover, one of the guides was suffering from frostbite. The party, consisting of Mr. Crofts and the guides Joseph Demarchi, Fran~ois Mugnier and Jules Monard spent the night at the Grands Mulets, and descended to Chamonix next morning. The severe conditions experienced by Mr Crofts' party on 17 January 1901 were prolonged by exceptionally cold winds which persisted for several weeks in many Alpine regions. Although little mountaineering was possi­ ble the fust ski ascents of two peaks were completed: on 30 March Henry Hoek and Ernst Schottelius climbed the Dammastock; and on 28 May Schottelius, accompanied by Friedrich Reichert, reached the summit of the Oberaarhorn. A period of fine weather which commenced in May prompted an early start to the climbing season and by the end of the fIrst week in June a number of successful expeditions had been completed. Throughout Switzerland glorious, warm weather is being experienced, and with it Alpine climbing has begun in real earnest.
