Paradoxically, this implacably-driven music projects – and achingly so – a human, tender dimension. So he has it all! We are not talking here about ‘old wine in new bottles’ but rather a fragrant, fresh vintage proffered us in tonal containments – transformed by Burkian alchemy.This encomium, then, is by way of saying that Steven Burke is without question one of the major compositional voices of his generation. -

The resulting so-called fact-value split biases language against universal, objective values—where empirical observation is said to determine truth, while values are reduced to private emoting or socio-cultural human construction. This research questioned the definition of aesthetic value as determined by the music education as aesthetic education (MEAE) movement in the United States, and the justification of aesthetic education as a universally applicable and comprehensive approach to a course in general music/music appreciation. -

Ranging in age from 31 to 57, these four women and eight men from eight states come from widely-varied personal and artistic backgrounds, and have pursued divergent creative paths from concert music to jazz, acoustic to electronic, minutely-detailed to free and improvisatory, socially-engaged to abstract. They include a 2018 Pulitzer Prize Finalist, recipients of the Charles Ives Living award and Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Career Grant, and two much-acclaimed concert and jazz pianists. The Kyme Test of Aesthetic Judgments inMusic was administered before and after the c weeks of instruction.Analysis of Covariance was made of the data. Results indicatedthatA1) knowledge gained through the study cf contemporarymusic was nct transferred tc musicof the past, and(2) the 20th-century art music prcgram had greatest successin inner-city "deprived" schools.
