Paradoxically, this implacably-driven music projects – and achingly so – a human, tender dimension. So he has it all! We are not talking here about ‘old wine in new bottles’ but rather a fragrant, fresh vintage proffered us in tonal containments – transformed by Burkian alchemy.This encomium, then, is by way of saying that Steven Burke is without question one of the major compositional voices of his generation. -

As 2019 comes to a close (during an election year, no less), we find ourselves immersed in palpable divisiveness. As in the Twenties, current American opinion still differs violently on the particulars of racial equal- ity, women’s rights, drug legality, and political integrity. -

N E W S FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Elizabeth Dworkin, Dworkin & Company (914) 244-3803, [email protected] 2018 COPLAND HOUSE RESIDENCY AWARDS ANNOUNCED 12 Composers from 8 States Chosen for Coveted Stays at “One of the Best Working Spots on Earth” Cortlandt Manor, NY – An unusually diverse group of 12 highly-gifted composers has been selected to receive the 2018 Copland House Residency Awards. Ranging in age from 31 to 57, these four women and eight men from eight states come from widely-varied personal and artistic backgrounds, and have pursued divergent creative paths from concert music to jazz, acoustic to electronic, minutely-detailed to free and improvisatory, socially-engaged to abstract. They include a 2018 Pulitzer Prize Finalist, recipients of the Charles Ives Living award and Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Career Grant, and two much-acclaimed concert and jazz pianists. Artistic and Executive Director Michael Boriskin announced that Copland House’s Residents for 2018-19 will be MICHAEL BROWN, 31 (New York, NY); KE-CHIA CHEN, 38 (Philadelphia, PA); ANDREA CLEARFIELD, 57 (Philadelphia, PA); MICHAEL FIDAY, 57 (Cincinnati, OH); MICHAEL GILBERTSON, 31 (San Francisco, CA); HUCK HODGE, 41 (Seattle, WA); BENJAMIN KRAUSE, 33 (Valparaiso, IN); REMY LE BOEUF, 32 (Brooklyn, NY); ŽIBUOKLĖ MARTINAITYTĖ, 45 (New York, NY); PAULA MATTHUSEN, 39 (Middletown, CT); JUSTIN MERRITT, 43 (Northfield, MN); and GREG REITAN, 45 (South Pasadena, CA). Wiley Hitchcock Institute for Studies in American Music Conservatory of Music, Brooklyn College of the City University of New York Volume XLVIII, Issue 2 Spring 2019 Theremin, Instrument of Paradoxes: A Composer’s Journey Dalit Warshaw, Brooklyn College, CUNY, and The Juilliard School I first met theremin virtuoso Clara Rockmore when I was a very young girl, during one of my frequent visits to her sister, the brilliant pianist Nadia Reisenberg. My relationship with Nadia was deeply unique, as she was the first significant musical role model during my development as a pianist, and the first to encourage my budding aspirations as a composer. At eight years old, I was greatly rattled by her passing in 1983 at the age of seventy-eight. Soon after, her younger sister Clara began to assume Nadia’s precious and definitive role in my burgeoning life as a creative and performing artist. Nadia Reisenberg and Dalit Warshaw, age 7, 1982 Throughout my childhood and adolescence, Clara was family. She would attend the performances of my latest orchestral music. She was one of the few mentors for whom I would play through a program for a pending piano recital or concerto appearance, as her reactions were always exceedingly intuitive and inspirational. These occasions would typically take place in her old Art Nouveau apartment at the Parc Vendome on West 57th Street, accompanied by elaborate teas that included her sister Newta Sherman’s homemade piroshki. At other times, they would occur at my childhood home in upstate New York, where Clara always loved to visit during the last stages of autumn to see the leaves. -

This very first electronic instrument was invented 100 years ago by the Russian scientist, Leon Theremin. The world’s leading theremin virtuoso, Carolina Eyck, will join us for a new concerto by Dalit Warshaw, the centerpiece of an evening that will also include Borodin’s Prince Igor Overture and Rachmaninoff’s gorgeous, deeply moving masterpiece, his Symphony No. 2. In December, we mark the beginning of the holiday season with Mozart’s festive “Linz” Symphony, Pachelbel’s Canon, and a thrilling work by Andre Myers in collaboration with Albany High School.
