Like on my knees bowing to Rain Carrington and worshiping the ground she walks on!"Here is to the weirdest couple on the planet. A sh*t kicking cowboy and this lacy dressed goth boy!"I was seriously conflicted because on one hand, I am really attracted to guys like Xen (I drooled at every physical mention of him in the beginning). But the mother in me, wanted to wrap him up tight, hold him and never let go. So, Xen is a new favorite character for me. And I really liked kinky Memphis a lot! And these guys are fantastic together! We also get a lot of other favorites in this one. Beast his boys, Brian, Morgan and Pez, Lonnie and Travis.This to me, was R.C.'s best writing. I hung on her every word. I'm sure it wasn't easy writing a mute character like Xen. But I couldn't imagine it being done better.Some of the scenes between Xen and Memphis were just so beautiful and touching. As were scenes between best friends Xen and PJ. She did a fabulous job conveying the emotions of a scene.This book had it all! It was kinky, romantic, sexy, intense, heartwarming, suspenseful. It was emotional but also had some humor. Just an all around put together book!5 stars just isn't enough for me! Even though Memphis doesnrsquo;t want to have a sub or fall in love. Xen with his strength, his beauty steals his heartWhat you do with a man who doesnrsquo;t talk and a man who is not perceptive? A man who is not good with words and sharing his feeling and a man who does share but not with words? He says SO much! You just have to hear him!I had to keep putting the book down and just absorb what I have just read. Itrsquo;s that good! Itrsquo;s that powerful! These characters are living, breathing, loving men that come to life before your eyes!!As I am reading this book Irsquo;m smiling so big that my cheeks actually hurt! At the same time I have tears in my eyes because Xen is SO loving, So caring, He says SO much! You just have to hear him! He says so much! So much! I have never put a book down so many times. I just couldnrsquo;t read The End! I knew that it would kill me and it would be quite some time before I would be able to pick up a book againThe struggle between these two to find their relationship. To find their home. Itrsquo;s real. Itrsquo;s honest! Itrsquo;s alive!When I found out WHY Xen doesnrsquo;t speak I was heartbroken and had tears in my eyes!!     Doctoral Dissertation Academic Year 2018 Consumption of Images: Country-of-Origin Image and the Perception Gaps caused by Global Marketing of Cultural Commodities Keio University Graduate School of Media and Governance 81449421 SUTER JILLIAN RAE Abstract Globalization allows the for the consumption of goods produced around the world. It also allows for images to be created and viewed globally. Global marketing is advantageous to many markets and increases the number of possible consumers. However, with changing frames of reference, the perception of the image also changes. While this phenomenon did not unilaterally affect the marketing of most consumer goods, it could have a profound effect on the increasing global consumption of images. This is especially true in terms of countries and their soft power. Most research has focused the country-of-origin and the quality of the commodities when comparing countries global markets. As more commodities become digitalized and image-based, a stronger knowledge foundation on how images are perceived globally is necessary to avoid misunderstandings. In this dissertation, I show how images can be reinterpreted depending of their frames of reference or context changes. The first is a part of the research consisted of a global survey of American and Japanese school children and their impressions of a new children’s character analyzed with SPSS. The second part was three observational research field-trips to Japanese marketing events with Japanese mascot characters called Yuru-chara. These two parts of the research combined to show where the gaps in perception are for image-based commodities between Japan and the United States of America, particularly with children’s characters and Yuru-chara.

Again in recent years, detective fiction has experienced a popularity boom in Japan, and there has been an outpouring of new detective fiction books as well as various television and movie adaptations. It is not a revelation that the Japanese detective fiction genre, while rife with imitation and homage to Western works, took a dramatic turn somewhere along the line, away from celebrated models like Poe, Doyle, and Christie, and developed into a unique subgenre of Japanese prose.

Atmosphere as Culture begins by tracing how this use of media as a mood regulator emerges in postindustrial Japan, drawing from the longer histories of background music, environmental art, and therapy culture. The dissertation then theorizes this aesthetics of atmosphere in music, animation, literature, and video art. The analysis explores the relationship between ambient media and landscape, dreams, the cosmos, domesticity and gender, the rhythms of urban life, cosubjectivity, and information overload. In each case, discussion focuses on how the aesthetics of atmosphere reimagines subjectivity vis-à-vis the surrounding environment, shifting the postindustrial self away from a social identity based in interpersonal relations and towards a more abstract sensing body developed with and through the moods afforded by mediated space. Each section documents how the aesthetics of ambient media serve to erase other people from the sensible horizons of postindustrial life, while at the same time expanding the environmental affordances of the human body in new directions.

    The Crisis of Language in Contemporary Japan: Reading, Writing, and New Technology Jun Mizukawa Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 Jun Mizukawa All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT The Crisis of Language in Contemporary Japan: Reading, Writing, and New Technology Jun Mizukawa My dissertation is an ethnographically inspired theoretical exploration of the crises of reading and writing in contemporary Japan. Each of the five chapters examines concrete instances of reading and writing practices that have been problematized in recent decades. By calling attention to underlying moral assumptions, established sociocultural protocols, and socio-technological conditions of the everyday, I theorize the concept of embodied reading and writing thresholds. The scope of analysis is partly informed by popular discourse decrying a perceived decline in reading and writing proficiency among Japanese youth. This alleged failing literacy figures as a national crisis under the assumption that the futurity of children’s national language proficiency metonymically correlates with the future well being of its national cultural body. In light of heightened interests in the past, present, and future of books, and a series of recent state interventions on the prospect of “national” text culture, it is my argument that ongoing tensions surrounding the changing media landscape and semiotic relations to the world do not merely reflect changes in styles of language, structures of spatiotemporal awareness, or forms of knowledge production. Rather, they indicate profound transformations and apprehensions among the lives mediated and embodied by the very system of signification that has come under scrutiny in the post-Lost Decade Japan (03/1991- 01/2002).

    1 Mapping out the K-pop fandom in the UK Dr. Hyunsun Yoon School of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of East London, U.K. Abstract This study offers an ethnographic account of cultural practices of the K-pop fans in the UK. It considers the ways in which the UK’s social milieu receives culturally hybridized K-pop, in particular how young fans consume this cultural import. While focusing on the emergence, development and prospects of K-pop fandom, it also examines the ways in which the media – both the British and the Korean – responded to K-pop phenomenon and how the fans have appropriated the media representation. The theoretical framework of this study comes from relevant literature on the Korean wave, on fandom, and on popular music and youth culture. In the British context, the emergence of the K-pop fandom cannot be attributed to the cultural similarities and geographic proximity nor the popularity of the Korean dramas; it was social media that facilitated the spread of K-pop popularity. The study reveals that the UK K-pop fans are media literate and well-mannered, far from the stereotyped image of fans being obsessive loner or hysterical crowd. It also shows that there is a potential to develop a distinct subculture: within the K-pop fan community, ‘subcultural’ sensibilities were found in the ways that they often used their knowledge of music, dance, and music industry in cultural production as well as cultural consumption. Media representation was found lagged behind the times in that the British media was Orientalist while the Korean counterpart was nationalistic.
