Ambitious players wanting a practical guide to the middle game will find that Ludek Pachman's great trilogy, which is completed with this volume, stands in a class of its own. In each of these books the need for understanding is emphasized: there are too many variations for any memory to store. The player must understand the basic principles involved and the typical positions or maneuvers that can arise. Ludek Pachman's examples will augment his experience and should facilitate finer judgments as to the types of position to aim for, how to plan for them and in the allocation of priorities. But games also need to be viewed as an entity, and for this reason the author has concentrated on teaching by means of whole games. Ludek Pachman, the West German and former Czechoslovak Grandmaster, has taken part in international chess since 1945. -

Clear, Concise Strategic InstructionBy R. TobiasThis is one of the classics of chess middlegame instruction. Covering more or less the same ground as Nimzovich's more famous 'My System', it is a condensation of the original three volume work. The most important principles are all here, however. Pachman was a very strong GM in his heyday, and he covers many vital topics with authority. Concise and clearly written essays are followed by superbly annotated games from many of the greats of the early and mid-twentieth century like Nimzovich, Alekhine, Smyslov and Botvinnik. Concepts like play in the center and on the wings, pawn structures, and how to play with the various pieces are are covered. The chapter on how to use your rooks is considered by some strong players to be so good that it alone is worth the price of the book. -

Dutchman Who Did Not Drink Beer. He Also Surprised My Wife Nina by Showing up with Flowers at the Lenox Hill Hospital Just Before She Gave Birth to My Son Mitchell
168 The Bobby Fischer I Knew and Other Stories Dutchman who did not drink beer. He also surprised my wife Nina by showing up with flowers at the Lenox Hill Hospital just before she gave birth to my son Mitchell. I hadn't said peep, but he had his quiet ways of finding out. Max was quiet in another way. He never discussed his heroism during the Nazi occupation. Yet not only did he write letters to Alekhine asking the latter to intercede on behalf of the Dutch martyrs, Dr. Gerard Oskam and Salo Landau, he also put his life or at least his liberty on the line for several others. I learned of one instance from Max's friend, Hans Kmoch, the famous in-house annotator at AI Horowitz's Chess Review. Hans was living at the time on Central Park West somewhere in the Eighties. His wife Trudy, a Jew, had constant nightmares about her interrogations and beatings in Holland by the Nazis. Hans had little money, and Trudy spent much of the day in bed screaming. Enter Nina. My wife was working in the New York City welfare system and managed to get them part-time assistance. Hans then confided in me about how Dr. E greased palms and used his in fluence to save Trudy's life by keeping her out of a concentration camp. But mind you, I heard this from Hans, not from Dr. E, who was always Max the mum about his good deeds. Mr. President In 1970, Max Euwe was elected president of FIDE, a position he held until 1978. -

Good but flawedBy A. AliCan't understand the unrestrained adulation some reviewers have given this book. Soltis can write very well - see for example 'Soviet Chess' which is a scholarly work, or see 'Confessions of a Chess Grandmaster'. The title being reviewed here is also one of his better efforts. The book explains the pragmatic realities of calculation very well indeed. A thoughtful reading of this book will enhance one's understanding of what to calculate, how to calculate, how far to calculate, and what positions deserve calculation. By implication, one's strength would improve. It's difficult to provide a synopsis of this book because, like Kotov, it's not coherently orgainised but is a compendium of practical wisdom concerning calculation. Chapters include 'Trees and how to build them', 'Rechecking' and 'The Practical Calculator' - all of importance to a player.I've given this four stars (and not five) for 3 reasons.
