Brilliant Mates in Moscow by IM Yochanan Afek
Chess Today is happy to present an article on composition by one of our readers – IM Yochanan Afek (left, photo by Cathy Rogers). This article was first published in Chess Today No. 1069 and 1070 (October 2003). Brilliant Mates in Moscow by IM Yochanan Afek, "Problems and games are two equal aspects of chess", wrote once Dr. Milan Vukcevich, the great American composer who passed away earlier this year and who was also a very strong over-the-board master. Obviously he did not refer by that to the number of people involved but rather to the injustice frequently done to this fine art, by too many players who tend to consider it as a waste of time for the purpose of improving one's playing skills. "Relative to the game", he explains, "a good chess problem activates more force per move, uses pieces more efficiently and stresses more their cooperation and interference with each other. A good problem may combine a dozen separate elements into one extraordinary event, in the same way in which a good novel may condense a dozen real lives into a single lifetime of its fictitious hero..." — food for the thought... Not everyone knows that within the immense world of chess, a smaller, yet a highly motivated and constantly growing community of problems and studies fans has developed over the years, organizing a variety of composing and solving events, publishing dozens of books and magazines, awarding official FIDE titles and even holding an annual congress. All this worldwide intensive activity is done voluntarily and winning dozens of prestigious awards definitely will not make one any richer as the prize money, if any, is usually rather modest. -

For Immediate Release Judit Polgar Inspires
For Immediate Release Judit Polgar inspires ‘Chess and Female Empowerment’ conference The strongest female chess player of all time, Judit Polgar, will be the inspirational headline speaker at the 7th London Chess and Education Conference (November 30-December 1, at the Irish Cultural Centre, Hammersmith). The conference, a regular feature of the festival of events during the London Chess Classic, will feature a stellar line-up of expert speakers from around the world and focus on the ground-breaking theme ‘Chess and Female Empowerment.’ Conference participants from up to 40 countries, including female and male chess players, educators and organisers, are expected to offer insights on how to improve the gender balance in chess and examine initiatives to make the game more welcoming and accessible to women and girls at all levels. Judit, an Honorary FIDE Vice-President, will relate how her experiences – breaking through to the world top 10 while overcoming obstacles to female participation in professional chess, and promoting chess for all in her home country of Hungary and around the world – can inspire new generations of female players to excel and compete on equal terms with their male counterparts. Other keynote speakers at the conference will include US Chess Federation Executive Director Carol Meyer and Grandmaster Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, a former professional chess player who is now a leading politician in Lithuania. The conference will reach a fitting conclusion with Judit Polgar leading a wide-ranging roundtable discussion, “A Century of Women´s Chess: What Have We Learned?” on Sunday, 1st December. Speakers from the UK will include England’s top female professional chess player, IM and WGM Jovanka Houska, the renowned chess writer and investigative journalist Sarah Hurst, leading chess educators Sarah Kett and Samantha Ali, of charity Chess in Schools and Communities, and Chris Fegan, Director of Women’s Chess for the English Chess Federation. -

ECF Enewsletter Edition No. 21 June 2018
ECF eNewsletter Edition No. 21 June 2018 Dear ECF Member Welcome to the June edition of the eNewsletter. In this edition we have a fascinating lengthy interview with Mostaque Choudhury, secretary of the British Bangla Chess Association, whose club is proving to be a huge success on and off the board. In their first season they have won London League Division Four at a canter while using chess as a tool for much needed social change among young people in one of the poorest areas of London. We also look at some excellent performances by juniors in the 4NCL Spring Congress, there's a welcome return of the Master in Your Local series and the annual problem solving championships are beginning soon. On a housekeeping note, we understand members are finding difficulty with 'preferences' if they have previously unsubscribed. We apologise for this inconvenience and we will put this right. With the County Championships and British Championships coming up in June and July, there is plenty of distraction from the football World Cup (I am assuming England will revert to type and be on the plane home before they get off the one that brings them to Russia). --- Mark Rivlin Across the board Mark Rivlin interviews British Bangla Chess Association secretary Mostaque Choudhury here --- https://www.englishchess.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/BBCA.docx Enquiries about the BBCA to Mostaque here --- [email protected] Advance to finance Aside from membership rates featured in last month's newsletter, there were other important decisions taken on the ECF Finance Council meeting including make-up of county championships and initiative to get more women involved in chess. -
