It would be ridiculous to cling on to power any longer. The January election results had been simply too devastating. Two per cent was a joke, an awfully bad joke. Since then he had come in for an inordinate amount of hate from the press, not to mention scorn and mockery. A king of the people without a people. A jester on the royal throne. An un-Bavarian nut. A Jew from somewhere else. Kurt Eisner had thrown in the towel. He had negotiated far into the night with his archenemy Erhard Auer, the leader of the Social Democrats. Ah, if only he could have negotiated, but he had no bargaining chips. Auer had offered him the post of ambassador to Prague. He might as well have said first secretary at the consulate in Australia. It was over. He’d had his fifteen seconds of fame, and he’d done everything he could to turn the Kingdom of Bavaria into a people’s republic, a land of solidarity and philanthropy. It had been a dream, suddenly being elected Minister President during the night of 7-8 November. -

“My old Mother” – Therese Graf in New York Exile, the Transatlantic Itinerary of a Photographic Portrait, and Strong History “from below” Eva-Maria Troelenberg A Provincial Photograph and a Migrant’s Mind- map Among the holdings of the Monacensia Literaturarchiv in Munich is a framed black-and-white photographic portrait, a close-up of an old woman in three-quarter profile (fig. 1). Probably taken during the 1920s or early ’30s, this photograph shows Therese Graf, née Heimrath, born as a peasant’s daughter in a small Bavarian village near lake Starnberg in 1857, and deceased in that same village in 1934. Of her eleven children, four migrated to the United States—three of them did so while she was still alive, for economic reasons shortly before or after the First World War, and they were to become mineworkers or bakers in the new world. Fig. 1. Photographic portrait of The fourth, her son Oskar (1894–1967), was to follow in Therese Graf, ca. 1938. His exile was both politically and personally motivated, 1920s/early ’30s, collection and it is a prominent and perhaps also one of the best Münchner Stadtbibliothek/Monacensia, documented cases of migration from Germany to the United Dd 41. States during the first half of the twentieth century. Therese’s youngest son, Oskar, is the well-known German novelist Oskar Maria Graf. Her portrait was among his possessions, kept in his New York apartment, and came back home when parts of his estate were given to the city of Munich posthumously, on the occasion of what would have been his ninetieth birthday.1 Taking its cue from this 1/12 constellation, in the following I will focus on the photograph of Therese Graf and its itinerary, which was set in motion through migration. -

Millett Advisor Department of History Copyright by Nicholas J. Steneck 2005 ABSTRACT In the opening decades of the Cold War, West Germans faced a terrifying geo-strategic dilemma. Located on the frontlines of the Cold War between nuclear-armed superpowers, they were forced to consider how best to protect their nascent democracy from the possibility of a devastating war fought with weapons of mass destruction. For Chancellor Konrad Adenauer and the right-of- center coalition that governed West Germany in the 1950s and 1960s, the answer to the country’s dilemma was threefold. Close rapprochement with the West and a strong national military were combined with civil defense—protecting the country’s civilian population and its societal and cultural institutions from the worst effects of a future war through a tripartite strategy of mass evacuation, protective shelters, and post-attack rescue and recovery units. This chronologically and topically-organized dissertation examines the origins, evolution, and demise of the West German civil defense program during the Cold War’s opening decades. In doing so it presents three major arguments. First, as a result of unique historical and cultural influences West Germany’s early-Cold War civil defense program exhibited remarkable conceptual continuity with its Weimar and National Socialist predecessors.
