    From the Sacred to the Profane: The Oblation Ritualized FROM THE SACRED TO THE PROFANE: THE OBLATION RITUALIZED Reuben Ramas Cañete ABSTRACT The study approaches the historical construction of the narratives surrounding the statue titled Oblation, deemed as the symbol of the University of the Philippines (UP), from the theoretical perspective of Eric Hobsbawn’s notion of “invented traditions,” as well as Judith Butler’s theory of performativity. The study looks at the genesis of this narrative as informed by the anti-colonial struggle of the late-19th and early 20th century, but amplified and “sacralised” through the symbolic power of the UP Presidency, particularly under Jorge C. Bocobo (1935-1939) under whose auspices the Oblation was erected on November 30, 1935. The study also foregrounds the key term “Sacrificial Body” as a determinant of the Oblation’s narrational focus of itself as subject, and its function as idealized model or template to be “followed” by the UP community. The ambivalence of this narrative, however, is central to the production of contradicting discourses throughout its history, from the “sacred” Pre-War image akin to a secular Crucifixion upon which rituals supervised by a “priesthood” composed of the University’s officials were enacted; to the Post- War secular (and thus “profane”) image of the Oblation as that “representing academic freedom” from the viewpoint of its progressive student body and faculty.     2016 ANNUAL REPORT BUILDING RESILIENCE • EMPOWERING COMMUNITIES Cover Rationale This year our theme is ‘Resilience’ to give tribute to the various ways in which humans survive and strive through adverse time, such as natural disasters or conict. Surviving and striving through such events however requires a helping hand, that is where MERCY Malaysia plays a signicant role. Through various projects we aim to transfer expert knowledge, skills, provide necessary materials and equipment to enhance communities resilience against the disasters they face. One such project in 2016, which is depicted on the cover, took place in Sierra Leone, West Africa. Sierra Leone was crippled for several months by the Ebola virus, rapidly spreading amongst communities and killing thousands. Although communities showed great strength and courage in ghting the virus, the high level of poverty and lack of sanitation facilities in rural communities made some eorts eeting. Thereby, MERCY Malaysia decided to provide communities with assistance through the activities of building wells, delivering hygiene kits and educating students from 100 schools about hygiene and health, with the objective of increasing the communities’ resilience through the transfer of knowledge and provision of essential sanitation items.     From Colonial Policy to National Treasure: Tracing the Making of Audiovisual Heritage in the Philippines Bernadette Rose Alba Patino This study traces the history and construction of institutionalized cultural and audiovisual heritage in the Philippines and investigates how evolving views of heritage have shaped the country’s audiovisual archiving and preservation movement in the last fifty years. It examines the impact of naturalized definitions of heritage, as globalized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and the implementation of audiovisual archival institution building, cultural policies, and archival priorities in the Philippines under the heritage banner set out by the organization. Considering the formation of what heritage scholars call “authorized heritage discourse” (AHD), this paper argues that a heritage hierarchy emerged in the country’s contemporary audiovisual archiving landscape, privileging an industrial view of cinema while marginalizing other forms of moving image practice. The study calls for an awareness of and resistance to institutionalized archives’ claims to social, cultural, and political power in their heritage construction and discourse. The location of an artwork reflects how well it upholds academic tradition or rejects that format. Locale determines the amount of bureaucratic control an artist faces and may determine the economic prospects of their work. Therefore, artworks range from literal to symbolic according to the artists’ ability to create their vision without fear of censorship. Objectives: Understand the similarities and differences between works of art. Understand the relationship of art history to other histories. Identify historical events that have contributed to the evolution of the arts. Develop observational abilities in order to critique visual art. Justify personal and non-personal critiques of art. Gain an overall academic awareness through the study of the fine arts. Outcomes: Analyze the relationship between visual art and human rights.
