DESCRIPTION David Attenborough hardly needs any introduction his voice has accompanied so many of the best natural history programs that have graced our televisions over several decades. Life On Air, his autobiography, tells the story of how he has managed to professionalise his schoolboy interests in such a remarkably successful way. Attenborough's Life On Air began in 1950, having taken a degree in Natural Sciences in the University of Cambridge, done National Service in the Navy, got married, done a year as an editor with an educational publisher, had a son and then answered a BBC recruiting ad in the Times. Turned down for BBC Radio, he was offered a traineeship in BBC TV which was pioneering the medium in Britain and he has never looked back. The rest is TV history and you can read Sir David's personal view of it all in his engaging and highly entertaining book. This is no boring story of the rise and rise of a media mogul in the smoke-filled rooms of Ally Pally and Lime Grove. Having served his apprenticeship producing programmes like Animal, Vegetable, Mineral? and Song Hunter with the famous American folk singer and song collector Alan Lomax, he managed to escape from the confines of overlit studios into the natural world. Zoo Quest began in 1954 with an animal collecting trip to Sierra Leone and David Attenborough had found his metier. Since then he has managed to bring the wonders of the natural world into millions of living rooms around the world and to reach general audiences without patronising them, without any spurious antics, silly voices or dumbing down. His animal and plant subjects are the stars, Attenborough is the master of ceremonies who introduces the acts for our wonder and amazement. But his scope extends way beyond the birds and the bees. In the 1960s, it was suggested that he took up an administrative post--after all, you won't want to be gallivanting around the world when you are 50. Fortunately, he did not abandon gallivanting for admin but went freelance, studied anthropology and helped extend our view of native peoples and sympathies for their life styles. He went on to become responsible for coming up with famous BBC TV series such as Kenneth Clark's incredibly successful Civilisation series, followed by Bronowski's The Ascent of Man. Inevitably, he did become one of the BBC suits but one that wore a camouflage jacket. What is remarkable is that Attenborough has managed to do it for so long without really changing his own style too much. He has not had to because the technology has changed and so he has constantly been able to give new views and insights into the details of life on Earth. Writing pretty much as he speaks, it is easy to hear his voice, dry sense of humour and generosity coming through all the time. Do not expect to read personal details, navel-gazing or malicious gossip--that is not his style. The only personal note comes at the end with the death of his wife in 1997. Over 100 photos associated with the huge range of programmes he has been intimately involved with decorate Life On Air, a fascinating personal story of our times. That, of course, would be neither entertaining nor ultimately dramatic. So it seems that as filmmakers we are doomed either to fail our audience or fail our cause. — Stephen Mills (1997) Five years before the BBC’s Frozen Planet was first broadcast in 2011, Sir David Attenborough publically announced his belief in human-induced global warming. “My message is that the world is warming, and that it’s our fault,” he declared on the BBC’s Ten O’Clock News in May 2006. This was the first statement, both in the media and in his numerous wildlife series, in which he didn’t hedge his opinion, choosing to focus on slowly accruing scientific data rather than ruling definitively on the causes and likely environmental impacts of climate change. Frozen Planet, a seven-part landmark documentary series, produced by the BBC Natural History Unit and largely co-financed by the Discovery Channel, was heralded by many as Attenborough’s definitive take on climate change. It followed a string of big budget, multipart wildlife documentaries, known in the industry as landmarks1, which broke with convention to incorporate narratives on complex environmental issues such as habitat destruction, species extinction and atmospheric pollution. David Attenborough’s The State of the Planet (2000), a smaller three-part series, was the first wildlife documentary to deal comprehensively with environmental issues on a global scale.

    Attenborough¶s natural history films: The evolutionary epic Graham Huggan This chapter looks at Sir David Attenborough¶s natural history films as examples of the µevolutionary epic¶: a by definition large-scale genre which, in keeping with natu- ral historical principles of systematic description and synthesising knowledge, drama- tises evolutionary processes of selective adaptation while illustrating the seemingly infinite variety needed for survival in the struggle for life. Drawing primarily on Life On Earth (1979), the chapter shows how this justly acclaimed TV series, sometimes seen as one of BBC¶s crowning achievements, upholds broadly conservationist prin- ciples while tending to rely on dubious sociobiological assumptions ± about inher- itance and lineage, territoriality and competition, the sexual division of labour and, not least, the capitalist system that sustains these ± which also go unchallenged else- where in Attenborough¶s nature documentary work. 1. Introduction Sir David Attenborough is one of the most recognisable faces on tele- vision today, though his physical appearances have become increas- ingly infrequent. For more than half a century, the windswept hair, the whispering voice, and the simultaneously authoritative and self- effacing demeanour all combined to make the Attenborough persona one of television¶s most readily identifiable screen images, and the nature documentaries he presented one of television¶s most enduringly successful market brands. Jean-Baptiste Gouyon University College London Abstract The wildlife making-of documentary genre has become a routine appendage to most prestige natural history series. However, the genre is a fairly recent one. The first attempt at producing a wildlife MOD was in 1963 the half-hour long Unarmed Hunter. The first wildlife MOD accompanying a natural history programme was in 1984 The Making of the Living Planet. In between these two films, the televising of natural history became a profession revolving around the technical mastery of the filmmaking apparatus. The article examine this history, and suggests that the MOD helped filmmakers to secure credibility as producers of knowledge. Its legal protection under Australian state and Commonwealth laws and, international law has done little to arrest the decline of its populations. Shark attacks remain rare. However in response to seven shark fatalities in the period 2010 - 2013 in Western Australian waters the state government controversially introduced a lethal trial drum line program the purpose of which was to target capture and dispose of the great white and other marine life.
