There is much more dangling from trees, trekking through forests and talking to the locals than scratching his head back in the office. This is one of the very best audiobooks I've read. One of the greatest humans to ever walk the planet, with a voice like no other that instantly brings nostalgia and warm feelings to my heart! I am biassed! David Attenborough Life on Air: Memoirs of A Broadcaster Writer Chock full of anecdotes from his half century or more in the field, it was a very easy read even though I'd heard a few of them before in various TV programs or live appearances. In between the anecdotes there is a lot of serious paragraphs about how the television business works, and the ethics of shooting wildlife documentaries as well as concerns about the state of the planet in general. David Casting Around Living treasure Just like listening to granddad telling you his adventures. He worked his way up to assistant producer back when the TV program was still live and mostly black-and- white and there were still hours every day when there was no TV program at all so as not to interfere with household duties and such. He had to make the journey in 80 days using only forms of transport that would have been available to Fogg. He discusses issues of controversy and integrity surrounding the truthfulness of natural history documentaries, especially with consideration of the potential for untruth due to developing technology. Maybe it was for theatrical effect but it was too constant for my liking. By the end, the author felt that he had filmed a full set, and had filmed every major group of living creature on the planet. Don't get me wrong, I would have most likely adored this book reading it, but it is a pale dead corpse in comparison to that narration. It's one of the most inspiring books I've read, extremely well narrated by the Sir. I remember my father watched a variety of documentaries and always encouraged me to watch them too, but David's were the only ones I watched. You can safely skip to the end to get the updates on his life. Sir David's great sense of humour doesn't often show itself on his programmes, though having seen him "do" both George and Joy Adamson, I can tell he would make a good impressionist , but there is much to chuckle at in this affectionate memoir of a wonderful life lived to the absolute full. Genuinely moving scenes interspersed with humorous tales of events of his travels around the globe. Accept all Manage Cookies. GREENING WILDLIFE DOCUMENTARY Morgan Richards The loss of wilderness is a truth so sad, so overwhelming that, to reflect reality, it would need to be the subject of every wildlife film. That, of course, would be neither entertaining nor ultimately dramatic. So it seems that as filmmakers we are doomed either to fail our audience or fail our cause. — Stephen Mills (1997) Five years before the BBC’s Frozen Planet was first broadcast in 2011, Sir David Attenborough publically announced his belief in human-induced global warming. “My message is that the world is warming, and that it’s our fault,” he declared on the BBC’s Ten O’Clock News in May 2006. This was the first statement, both in the media and in his numerous wildlife series, in which he didn’t hedge his opinion, choosing to focus on slowly accruing scientific data rather than ruling definitively on the causes and likely environmental impacts of climate change. Frozen Planet, a seven-part landmark documentary series, produced by the BBC Natural History Unit and largely co-financed by the Discovery Channel, was heralded by many as Attenborough’s definitive take on climate change. It followed a string of big budget, multipart wildlife documentaries, known in the industry as landmarks1, which broke with convention to incorporate narratives on complex environmental issues such as habitat destruction, species extinction and atmospheric pollution. David Attenborough’s The State of the Planet (2000), a smaller three-part series, was the first wildlife documentary to deal comprehensively with environmental issues on a global scale.

    IAN WALLACE The Enigma of Hitler Counterfactual Perspectives S ISAIAH BERLIN WAS THE FIRST TO ARGUE, plausibility is an essential requirement for any historian adopting a counterfactual A strategy.1 If it is to achieve any degree of legitimacy, counterfactual history must be based not on “mere fantasy” but on “calculations about the relative probability of plausible outcomes in a chaotic world.”2 Such a high degree of self-restraint may not be required of the writer of fiction, for whom a portion of fantasy is, in fact, an indispensable precondition for the imagina- tive exploration of any subject, including the historical, but I would argue that such fantasy is least likely to trivialize a subject such as Hitler where it is tem- pered by a concern for plausibility. Studies of the Nazi period continue to proliferate, but the figure of Hitler remains by common consent an enigma eluding final explanation.3 This is a situation which literature may be thought to have done relatively little to im- prove. Writing in 1975, J.P.     Sir David Attenborough David Attenborough is a wildlife film-maker and naturalist (a scientist who studies animals and their behaviour). He has been making television programmes for over 60 years and is considered by many to be a national treasure. Early Life David Frederick Attenborough was born in London on 8th May 1926. Growing up, he lived with his parents (Mary and Frederick) and his two brothers (Richard and John) on the campus of University College, Leicester, as his father was a principal there. In 1939, the Attenborough family fostered two German-Jewish girls called Irene and Helga, who became like sisters to David. As a child, David loved science and nature: he collected fossils, rocks, and other specimens, such as bird eggs. After finishing school, he went to Cambridge University to study natural sciences. Once he graduated, he was called to do two years’ service in the Royal Navy. He spent those two years in North Wales. Television In 1952, David joined the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) full time as a producer. In 1954, he began working on a series called ‘Zoo Quest’. This was filmed in many interesting places and showed animals in their natural environment. Something that hadn’t been done much before. The show was incredibly popular. David left the BBC in 1972 so he could write and produce his own shows. In 1979 he started a series called ‘Life on Earth’ which became popular. He continued to add to his ‘Life Collection’ for over 30 years, with each series focusing on a different plant or animal group.

This is a big old book, or at least it felt it to me. He was knighted in and now lives near London. As a student of film it is a veritable history of broadcast television and practical film making. If you are not happy then neither are we. Rediscover the thrills, grandeur, and unabashed fun of the Greek myths. David Attenborough is a giant of natural history and this book charting his many TV series brought home to me just what a contribution he's made to our understanding of the natural world.

Introduction to the organisation: Established in the mid-eighties, MDF The BiPolar Organisation is a national user-led charity for people affected by bipolar disorder. Bipolar Disorder (often referred to as manic depression) is a serious mental health problem involving extreme swings of mood (highs and lows). Both men and women of any age from adolescence onwards, and from any social background, may develop the condition. It often first occurs when work, study, family or emotional pressures are at their greatest. In women it can also be triggered by childbirth or menopause. The illness is episodic, i.e. occurs in phases, but it is possible to remain well for long periods. Typically, the key to coping is an early diagnosis by a qualified mental health specialist, and acceptance of the condition. Severe and/or untreated episodes can be very damaging to the sufferer and to their families and friends. MDF has recently moved to a new base in Victoria, a building it occupies with many other charities. It has other offices in Crewe and Newport. Importantly, it runs a national network of self-help groups stretching from Jersey to Northern Ireland – these provide advice on living with the condition, organise self-management training programmes, and support people with employment issues.
