We’ve added a significant number of new titles to the list and 2009 promises to be a bumper year. It’s wonderful to have two classic references available in paperback for the first time ever—Macdonald’s Princeton Encyclopedia of Mammals and Perrins’ Princeton Encyclopedia of Birds. These are outstanding books that belong on every naturalist’s shelf. A new Lars Jonsson book is always cause for celebration, and in Lars Jonsson’s Birds we have a mouthwatering collection of much of the master’s recent work, once again confirming him as the doyen of wildlife artists. Jeremy Mynott’s Birdscapes is an intriguing and elegant study of man’s enduring interrelationship with birds, at once insightful, amusing, and informative. We have also just published three new titles in our Princeton Field Guides series, and particular attention should be given to Mark Brazil’s magnificent Birds of East Asia, which covers Japan, Taiwan, Korea, and the eastern Asian seaboard, an area lacking a unifying guide until now, and to Dennis Paulson’s Dragonflies and Damselflies of the West, a richly illustrated, authoritative photographic guide, soon to be followed by a volume on the East. -

Each entry is accompanied by the author and date of availability, by the name of the type species, by a lithostratigraphic or biostratigraphic and geographic reference for the type species, by a family assignment and by an age indication of the type species at the Period level (e.g. MCAM, LDEV). A second listing of these names is taxonomically arranged in families with the families listed alphabetically, higher level classification being outside the scope of this work. Oslo ISSN 0300-949l. ISBN 82-00-04963-9. The species Pl. (Placoparia) cambriensis, Pl. (Coplacoparia ) tournemini and Pl. (Coplacoparia ) borni, described by Hammann (1971) from the Spanish Ordovician, are found in Brittany in formations attributed to the Llanvirn and the LIandeilo. The lateral borders of the librigenae of Pl. (Coplacoparia) tournemini and Pl. (Coplacoparia ) borni bear depressions into which the distal ends of the thoracic pleurae and the tips of the first pair of pygidial ribs come and fit during enrollment. These depressions, or coaptative structures sensu Cuenot (1919), are also to be observed in Pl. (Placoparia) zippei and Pl. (Hawleia) grandis, from the Ordovician of Bohemia. However, in the species tournemini and borni, additional depressions appear on the anterior cephalic border, and the coaptations evolve towards an increasing complexity. From Pl. (Placoparia) cambriensis, an ancestrai form with a wide geographic distribution, two distinct populations se em to have individu· alised by a process of allopatric speciation; one of these, probably neotenous, is represented by Pl. (Coplacoparia ) tournemini (Massif Armoricain and Iberian Peninsula), the other by Pl. (Placoparia ) zippei (Bohemia). BEVERLY TARLO THE CLASSIFICATION AND EVOLUTION OF THE HETEROSTRACI Abstract. - An outline classification is given of the Hetero straci, with diagnoses . of th e following orders and suborders: Astraspidiformes, Eriptychiiformes, Cya thaspidiformes (Cyathaspidida, Poraspidida, Ctenaspidida), Psammosteiformes (Tes seraspidida, Psarnmosteida) , Traquairaspidiformes, Pteraspidiformes (Pte ras pidida, Doryaspidida), Cardipeltiformes and Amphiaspidiformes (Amphiaspidida, Hiber naspidida, Eglonaspidida). It is show n that the various orders fall into four m ain evolutionary lineages ~ cyathaspid, psammosteid, pteraspid and amphiaspid, and these are traced from primitive te ssellated forms. A tentative phylogeny is pro posed and alternatives are discussed. INTRODUCTION Since 1858, when Huxley demonstrated that in the histological struc ture of their dermal bone Cephalaspis and Pteraspis were quite different from one another, it has been recognized that there were two distinct groups of ostracoderms for which Lankester (1868-70) proposed the names Osteostraci and Heterostraci respectively. Although these groups are generally considered to be related to on e another, Lankester belie ved that "the Heterostraci are at present associated with the Osteostraci because they are found in the same beds, because they have, like Cepha laspis, a large head shield, and because there is nothing else with which to associate them". In 1889, Cop e united these two groups in the Ostracodermi which, together with the modern cyclostomes, he placed in the Class Agnatha, and although this proposal was at first opposed by Traquair (1899) and Woodward (1891b), subsequent work has shown that it was correct as both the Osteostraci and the Heterostraci were agnathous. -

Published: 5:58PM BST 08 Aug 2010 Professor Harry Whittington Professor Harry Whittington, who died on June 20 aged 94, was the former Woodwardian Professor of Geology at Cambridge and the world’s leading authority on fossil trilobites; in later life he led painstaking research which revealed a “Cambrian explosion” and raised disturbing questions about the proCesses of evolution. Trilobites were hard-carapaced creatures, which thrived, in the Cambrian period, beginning 542 million years ago, until they died out nearly 300 million years later. Very distantly related to horseshoe crabs, they lived in the sea and crawled on land, evolving into more than 20,000 different species, ranging in size from a millimetre to nearly two feet. Many known species are ones which Whittington himself discovered on field trips around the world. Usually it is difficult to extract the fossils from the surrounding rock, but in the 1940s Whittington and his colleague Bill Evitt investigated beds in Virginia where the carapaces of the animals had been replaced by insoluble silica. By throwing samples into acid, they were able to recover thousands of perfect specimens, ranging from fully-grown adults to microscopic larvae. These fossils enabled Whittington, in a series of monographs published in the 1950s and 1960s, to revolutionize what we know about trilobites — how they grew from larva to maturity through successive molts, how they moved and articulated their bodies, and how they evolved and migrated. Later in his career, in 1966, Whittington was invited by the Canadian Geological Society to chair a group commissioned to examine the Burgess Shale deposits discovered by CD Walcott during the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1909. -
