Went home to get with the MD Color Guard for a trip to Yorktown VA for Yorktown Day. and/or state color guards Went back home for events in MD for Nov. and Dec. Back to VA for the Battle of Great Bridge VA. In January I was back to SC for the Battle of Cowpens - again had a good time in SC.

Wachtel 2013 Abstract My dissertation connects the Jesuit missions in Canada to the global Jesuit missionary project in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries by exploring the impact of French religious politics on the organizing of the first Canadian mission, established at Port Royal, Acadia, in 1611. After the Wars of Religion, Gallican Catholics blamed the Society for the violence between French Catholics and Protestants, portraying Jesuits as underhanded usurpers of royal authority in the name of the Pope—even accusing the priests of advocating regicide. As a result, both Port Royal’s settlers and its proprietor, Jean de Poutrincourt, never trusted the missionaries, and the mission collapsed within two years. After Virginia pirates destroyed Port Royal, Poutrincourt drew upon popular anti- Jesuit stereotypes to blame the Jesuits for conspiring with the English. Father Pierre Biard, one of the missionaries, responded with his 1616 Relation de la Nouvelle France, which described Port Royal’s Indians and narrated the Jesuits’ adventures in North America, but served primarily as a defense of their enterprise. Religio-political infighting profoundly influenced the interaction between Indians and Europeans in the earliest years of Canadian settlement.

Johnson, PhD ABSTRACT George Croghan was a mid-eighteenth-century British Indian agent. Born in Ireland, he came to America and settled in Pennsylvania in 1741. As an Ohio Valley fur trader he pushed far enough west to invite destruction of his Great Miami River depot by New France in 1752. Over time he befriended Shawnee, Ohio Huron and Miami Indians. Indian Department Superintendent Sir William Johnson rewarded his countryman’s effectiveness by appointing him western deputy. Britain’s victory in the French and Indian War added Illinois to Croghan’s responsibilities. General Lord Jeffrey Amherst led Britain’s war efforts; he was replaced by General Thomas Gage, under whom Croghan had served at Braddock’s Defeat. Pontiac’s War ensued; Gage and Johnson relied on Croghan, who knew the Ottawa leader, to end it. However, Croghan’s focus became blurred by land speculation. Several western land schemes crafted by Croghan and Philadelphia financier Samuel Wharton either failed or were cut short by the American Revolution.

This dissertation examines how and why the identities of the black diaspora² mulattoes, the West Indian population that was recruited to work on the United Fruit &RPSDQ\¶VEDQDQDSODQWDWLRQVDQGWKH$IUR-indigenous Garifuna²have been shaped historically, vis-à-vis the nation, by Central American literary discourses, from colonial times to the present day. The black diaspora is not a powerless or exploited populace, but a constituency whose local and transnational expressions of identity challenge the myths of harmony and ethnic homogeneity in Central America. Debates about ethnicity and citizenship take place in the political arena as well as literature, where canonical authors like Rubén Darío and Miguel Ángel Asturias as well as understudied writers like Paca Navas Miralda and David Ruiz Puga have intervened at different times in history. ,GHPRQVWUDWHWKDWTXHVWLRQVDERXWWKHEODFNGLDVSRUD¶V relevance to Central American national cultures emerge in periods of political and economic turmoil. Chapter 1 examines travel narratives by Thomas Gage and Jacob Haefkens in order to identify the opportunities for upward social mobility available to blacks in Central America during colonial times and argues that these opportunities allowed them to exercise control of their representation in Central American letters.

    FASHIONING IDENTITIES AND BUILDING AN EMPIRE: THOMAS GAGE’S THE ENGLISH-AMERICAN (1648) AND ENGLISH PURITAN PROTO-COLONIALISM1 JESÚS LÓPEZ-PELÁEZ CASELLAS Universidad de Jaén [email protected] 91 Abstract Thomas Gage, a seventeenth century English priest, traveler, and scholar was the first non-Spanish person to settle in, and travel extensively through, the Spanish Main. After his twelve-year experience as a Dominican in, mostly, Mexico and Guatemala, he returned to England and, after recanting, published his very popular The English-American, his Travail by Sea and Land, or, A New Survey of the West- India’s (1648).The success of this book (which rapidly went through several editions and translations) was mostly due to its coincidence, both in aim and content, with early seventeenth century English colonial ambitions —especially as devised by Oliver Cromwell in his so-called Western Design of 1655— to which it actively contributed. Gage’s successful retrospective construction of himself gained him a relatively influential position in Cromwell’s failed project to replace the Spaniards in the New World. In this paper I will examine how Gage’s insufficiently studied narrative influenced Cromwell’s military project, and will also focus on how this and similar writing produced a number of precarious and self-cancelling identities from which he tried to profit. It is also intended to inspire further exploration and interest in the topic. Activity worksheets with guided questions are provided below, along with a key containing answers or possible answers to the questions. Audience Students in an undergraduate or early-graduate-level seminar on colonial American history A course on historiography. Advanced information literacy / library instruction courses. Instruction sessions related to visual literacy (see worksheets for maps). Activity Print the worksheets below and station 1-3 students around each source. After giving a brief demonstration of how to properly handle rare materials, ask the students to spend about 15 minutes familiarizing themselves with their source and answering the worksheet questions. Move around the room and assist as necessary. Follow up by having the students discuss the worksheets and their experience working with these kinds of primary sources. Though the activity works best for a small seminar, larger classes could be accommodated by having students work in groups of 4-6 and/or view the materials in the Special Collections reading room before the discussion session.     Review and Rebuttal of SNWA Submissions In Support of Applications for Groundwater From Cave, Dry Lake and Delamar Valley For Submission to the Nevada State Engineer For the Cave Valley, Dry Lake, and Delamar Valleys Hearings Prepared by: Tom Myers, Ph.D. Hydrologic Consultant Reno, NV 12/19/2007 Summary and Conclusion The Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) submitted many reports and documents to the Nevada State Engineer in support of its applications for groundwater in Cave Dry Lake and Delamar Valleys (target valleys). For purposes of this rebuttal report, I will refer to those submissions collectively as SNWA (2007). Myers (2007) described the applications and provided hydrologic analysis and arguments as to why SNWA should not be granted any water from these valleys. This report reviews those SNWA documents. The primary reason Myers (2007) concluded SNWA should not be granted any water rights from the target basins is that, considered as a whole, all of the groundwater in the White River Flow System (WRFS) is already appropriated. Other researchers have reached the same conclusion (Mayer 2007). Although there is little development in the target basins, the recharge and interbasin flow from those basins is already fully utilized downgradient. Myers (2007) found there is simply insufficient water in the WRFS to export any to the Las Vegas area. The submittals by SNWA have provided no information to change that conclusion. In fact, once SNWA’s analysis errors are reconciled, consideration of flows to Lake Mead shows that the system is even more overappropriated than I previously have suggested. SNWA’s applications request water that simply is not available.

    CORE Metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk Provided by Loughborough University Institutional Repository Print, Religion and Identity: The cultural significance of Thomas Gage Catherine Armstrong* Abstract This article revisits the Atlantic significance of Thomas Gage, by placing his experience in the context of the religious turmoil of the seventeenth century and of stories of other converts from Catholicism, showing that his biographers’ judgement of him, as uniquely heinous, is unjustified. Five aspects of his life are explored, illustrating the complexities of his experience and the liminality of his identity. His early life as a Catholic, the renouncing of his faith in 1642, his life as an author, a traveller and a propagandist are discussed, concluding that Gage’s hybrid identity was an example of the way that isolated figures in the Anglo-Atlantic world negotiated a safe passage through the religious turmoil of the early Stuart and Civil War eras. Keywords: Thomas Gage; religion; identity; print culture; travel. Thomas Gage (c.1603–1656) was an unusual travel writer. He wrote with the aim of furthering the Protestant English cause, yet he was born a Catholic and was educated by Jesuits. He wanted to promote the potential of the Atlantic world to an English readership and yet he wrote about New Spain. For most of his period abroad, between 1625 and 1637, he claimed to have pined for England, yet he was conflicted about his identity, calling himself the “English-American”, which is the title of the book he wrote recounting his travels.
