  • Partnership Slow Food / Coop Switzerland
WP T2 – IDENTIFICATION OF BEST PRACTICES IN THE COLLECTIVE COMMERCIAL VALORISATION OF ALPINE FOOD INTANGIBLE CULTURAL HERITAGE WP leader: Kedge Business School Deliverable n. D.T2.2.1 Partnership Slow Food / Coop Switzerland Involved partner: Diego Rinallo Kedge Business School This project is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund through the Interreg Alpine Space programme. Abstract Coop is one of Switzerland’s largest retail and wholesale company, structured in the form of a cooperative society, with approximately 2,476 points of sale, and CHF 28.3 billion of revenues in 2016. Coop’s business principles stress giving preference to environment-friendly and socially responsible products, supporting Swiss agriculture, and favouring products made in Switzerland. Slow Food (SF) has been active in Switzerland since 1993. After a few episodic interactions, at the end of 2016 the two organisations established a long-term agreement to promote Swiss food culture and sustainable consumption. Through its Sustainability Fund, Coop financially supports SF and the establishment of SF presidia (21 of the 22 Swiss Presidia were established thanks to Coop’s financial and marketing support). In addition, Coop includes in its assortment a selection of 50 SF Presidia products (15 from Switzerland, the rest from other countries), including Traditional Valais rye bread, Farina Bona, raw milk Vacherin cheese, Chur salami, and mountain pasture Sbrinz. Given the limited quantities, seasonal unavailability, and lower profit margins of these products, Coop had to adapt its procurement procedures, and according to the retailer little or no returns are made from the sales of Presidia products. The cooperation has not only benefitted Presidia producers, but also boosted the visibility of SF in Switzerland.

  • Regional Economic Effects of Transport Infrastructure Expansions
Regional economic effects of transport infrastructure expansions: Evidence from the Swiss highway network Stephan Fretz∗ and Christoph Gorgasyz April 2013 Preliminary { please do not quote without authors' permission. JEL Classification: H54, O18 Keywords: Infrastructure; Transportation; Regional Development; Synthetic Control Abstract Expansions of transport infrastructure networks may have substantial impacts on the development of regions. Observable regional economic effects do not necessarily reflect effi- ciency gains, however; they may also stem from redistribution across regions. In this paper, we propose that efficiency gains result from an improvement in the absolute accessibility of regions, whereas redistribution is caused by changes in their relative accessibility. We investigate this hypothesis based on expansions of the Swiss highway network. Using the synthetic control method developed in Abadie, Diamond and Hainmueller (2010), we an- alyze whether specific highway network expansions led to increases in regional income per capita. We find that effects vary strongly across the different cases. As expected, we observe the largest impact when both absolute and relative accessibility of a region increase. ∗University of St. Gallen, Switzerland. ARLT3 1Department of Earth Sciences, Institute of Geochemistry and Petrology, ETH Zurich, Zurich, Switzerland; 2Division of Geology and Geochemistry, Department of Geosciences and Geography, University of Helsinki, Helsinki, Finland; 3Lengnau, Switzerland ABSTRACT The chemical evolution of fluids in Alpine fissure veins (open cavities with large free-standing crystals) has been studied by combination of fluid inclusion petrography, microthermometry, LA-ICPMS microanalysis, and thermo- dynamic modeling. The quartz vein systems cover a metamorphic cross section through the Central Alps (Switzer- land), ranging from subgreenschist- to amphibolite-facies conditions. Fluid compositions change from aqueous inclusions in subgreenschist- and greenschist-facies rocks to aqueous–carbonic inclusions in amphibolite-facies rocks. The fluid composition is constant for each vein, across several fluid inclusion generations that record the growth history of the quartz crystals.

  • EP15-2003 Gotthard Tunnel Railway Line
BUILDING A MODERN RAILWAY LINE IN THE GOTTHARD BASE TUNNEL Nicolas Steinmann, AlpTransit Gotthard AG, Switzerland Patrick Favre, AlpTransit Gotthard AG, Switzerland ABSTRACT The Gotthard base tunnel, which will begin operating in 2011, will be the most impressive element of the new transalpine railway line through the Swiss Alps. In view of the difficult accessibility and extreme climatic conditions, ensuring the fast and reliable transit of more than 300 trains per day through the two 57 km long single-track galleries represents a considerable technical challenge. This paper illustrates the process of translating the constraints and design specifications of this project into appropriate technical solutions which it then outlines. 1 INTRODUCTION On 29th November 1998, Swiss voters decided that the confederation should fund two new north-south railway projects : the Lötschberg and the Gotthard base lines. Both are intended to complement existing railway lines built at the end of the 19th century. Zimmerberg Lötschberg Gotthard Ceneri Figure 1: North-South railway lines running through Switzerland The Gotthard base tunnel, which directly links the northern and southern sides of the Alps, is the most complex part of the new lines. It is one thing to excavate two 57 km long tunnels through a mountain under 2'000 m of rock - a feat in itself - but quite another to have high speed passengers trains and heavy goods trains run through them which is, of course, the ultimate goal of the project. 2 «RAILWAY EQUIPMENT» A railway system usually consists of the following elements: • A track for guiding the train • Electrical power brought from the distribution network to the train by the catenary • A signalling system (e.g.
