Lone Shieling Shelter
HERITAGE CHARACTER STATEMENT Page 1 FHBRO Number 93-71 Cape Breton, Nova Scotia Lone Shieling Shelter Cape Breton Highlands National Park The Lone Shieling Shelter at Cape Breton Highlands National Park (CBHNP) was constructed in 1942. The design was produced by the Engineering and Construction Branch of the Department of Mines and Resources for the National Parks. It was designed as a shelter for passers-by in the park. Canadian Heritage is now the custodial department. See FHBRO Building Report 93-71 Reasons for Designation The Lone Shieling Shelter was designated Recognized because of its environmental significance, its unique architectural features and its important historical associations. Environmental significance resides in the Shieling's rustic character, its setting in an old growth forest and its status as a well-known landmark along the Cabot Trail Highway. and detailing of stonework, timber and thatch roofing, which give the shelter its significant rustic appearance. The design was influenced by images from “the Clachan,” an exhibition in Glasgow of a Scottish village. The establishment of the CBHNP in 1936 as one of the first national parks in the maritime provinces signalled the expansion of the National Parks system to eastern Canada. In order to highlight its physical resemblance to the Scottish Highlands, the National Parks Bureau adopted the Scottish theme. Professor S. Macintosh, who bequeathed the 100 acres of land for the park, requested that a small cabin be built in the same design as the Lone Shieling on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. A cairn erected beside the Shieling to commemorate this bequest makes reference to the Lone Shieling on the Isle of Skye and to the theme of the Scottish inhabitants of Cape Breton. -

Energy Efficiency and Historic Buildings Insulating Thatched Roofs This guidance note has been prepared and edited by David Pickles. It forms one of a series of thirteen guidance notes covering the thermal upgrading of building elements such as roofs, walls and floors. First published by English Heritage March 2012. Summary This guidance provides advice on the principles, risks, materials and methods for insulating thatched roofs. There are estimated to be about fifty thousand thatched buildings in England today, some of which retain thatch which is over six hundred years old. Thatching reflects strong vernacular traditions all over the country. Well-maintained thatch is a highly effective weatherproof coating as traditional deep thatched eaves will shed rainwater without the need for any down pipes or gutters. Locally grown thatch is a sustainable material, which has little impact on the environment throughout its life-cycle. It requires no chemicals to grow, can be harvested by hand or using traditional farm machinery, requires no mechanical processing and therefore has low embodied energy and can be fixed using hand tools. At the end of its life it can be composted and returned to the land. Thatch has a much greater insulating value than any other traditional roof covering. With the right choice of material and detailing, a well-maintained thatched roof will keep a building warm in winter and cool in summer and has the added advantage of being highly sound-proof. -

Shielings Introductions to Heritage Assets Summary Historic England’s Introductions to Heritage Assets (IHAs) are accessible, authoritative, illustrated summaries of what we know about specific types of archaeological site, building, landscape or marine asset. Typically they deal with subjects which have previously lacked such a published summary, either because the literature is dauntingly voluminous, or alternatively where little has been written. Most often it is the latter, and many IHAs bring understanding of site or building types which are neglected or little understood. This IHA provides an introduction to shielings (huts that served as temporary, summer, accommodation for people involved in transhumance, that is the removal of stock from permanent dwellings to exploit areas of summer pasture some distance away from the main settlement). Descriptions of the asset type and its development as well as its associations and a brief chronology are included. A list of in‑depth sources on the topic is suggested for further reading. Germany and other major importing countries such as the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Denmark rely on high import rates to meet the national consumption. This study aimed at providing a detailed picture of the thatching reed market in Northern Germany and at assessing the market potential for reed of regional origin. A written survey among all thatchers in Northern Germany was carried out in 2019, arriving at an effective sample of 47 out of 141 companies. The results revealed that for the responding companies the majority of the reed (59%) was used for rethatching roofs completely, 24% for newly constructed roofs, and 17% for roof repairs. Reed from Germany held a low share of 17% of the total consumption in 2018. Own reed harvesting was conducted by less than 9% of the responding companies and given up during the last decades by another 26%. The total market volume of reed for thatching in Northern Germany was estimated for 2018 with a 95% confidence interval at 3 0.8 million bundles of reed with a monetary value at ± sales prices of ¿11.6 2.8 million. -

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar Strategic Housing Investment Plan 2019/20-2023/24 October 2018 COMHAIRLE NAN EILEAN SIAR STRATEGIC HOUSING INVESTMENT PLAN 2019/20-2023/24 OCTOBER 2018 INTRODUCTION 1.1 The main purpose of the Strategic Housing Investment Plan (SHIP) is to set out the Comhairle’s affordable housing investment priorities in relation to the aims and objectives of its Local Housing Strategy (LHS). 1.2 The SHIP also demonstrates the Comhairle’s commitment to the Scottish Government’s (SG) ‘ More Homes Scotland’ (MHS) initiative to deliver 50,000 affordable homes nationally by 2021/22. 1.3 The SHIP primarily identifies proposals for the priorities for investment through the Affordable Housing Supply Programme (AHSP). This information is contained in the associated tables and the information uploaded to the SG’s HARP system. 1.4 The SHIP has been produced by the Comhairle in line with the revised guidance issued by the Scottish Government in August 2018 and in partnership with Hebridean Housing Partnership (HHP), the main Registered Social Landlord in the Outer Hebrides. 1.5 In summary, the SHIP identifies the requirement for £41.862m AHSP funding for the provision of 423 new affordable houses. 1.6 The SHIP covers a 5 year period from 2019/20 to 2023/24 and was approved by the Comhairle in September 2018. MORE HOMES SCOTLAND 2.1 In March 2016, Ministers announced More Homes Scotland (MHS), an overarching approach to support the increase in supply of homes across all tenures which will incorporate a variety of existing and new initiatives including: • A commitment of over £3 billion over the next 5 financial years to fund the delivery of 50,000 affordable homes accompanied by 5 year Resource Planning Assumptions, increased subsidy levels, a new Rural Housing Fund and support for City Deals. -
