Geographically blessed, peninsular Malaysia stretches the length of the Strait of Malacca, one of the most economically and politically important shipping lanes in the world. Capitalizing on its location, Malaysia has been able to transform its economy from an agriculture and mining base in the early 1970s to a relatively high-tech, competitive nation, where services and manufacturing now account for 75% of GDP (51% in services and 24% in manufacturing in 2013). In 2013, U.S.-Malaysia bilateral trade was an estimated US$44.2 billion counting both manufacturing and services,1 ranking Malaysia as the United States’ 20th largest trade partner. • SEATRU Newsletter 2010
Vol. 2, No.1 December 2010 SEATRU Newsletter SEATRU Updates on Conservation, Research and Outreach Programs 2010 Message from the Team Leader This year seems to have flown by in a blink. Without realizing it, we are almost at the end of 2010. This year was the second year for my team with SEATRU. With hard work, dedication and commitments from my team members, I can conclude that this year went off better compared to last year. Off course we have encountered few obstacles along the way, but when we work as a team definitely we could overcome each hurdle. The best thing was, as of the previous year we had fun in performing our work, and we have ended this season with joy and laughter! This year the nesting at Chagar Hutang had increased compared to last year. Monitoring was conducted for the whole year from January to December 2010. We have recorded a total of 676 nesting, of which 661 were green turtle nests and 15 were hawksbill turtle nests. From these a total of 40,000 healthy hatchlings were returned back to the sea. Our sincere thanks to all SEATRU volunteers (Slot A to Slot Z) for helping us in monitoring and protecting turtle nests at Chagar Hutang. It has been 18 years since SEATRU first started the sea turtle conservation program at Chagar Hutang. The unit is still very much active and dedicated in saving the sea turtles even though project leaders have changed hands. It is because of your support and action that motivate us to keep on going.

The Adoption and Trend of Over-The-Top Streaming Media among the Malaysian Audiences Asma Md. Isa*, Wan Amizah Wan Mahmud, Wan Idros Wan Sulaiman, Muhammad Adnan Pitchan Centre for Research in Media & Communication (MENTION), Faculty of Social Sciences & Humanities, UniversitiKebangsaan Malaysia, Bangi, Selangor, Malaysia *[email protected] ABSTRACT Netflix and several global OTT media providers entered into Malaysian market since way back in 2016. The prevalence of content accessed through global OTT media platforms has made film and drama series a genre broadcast through OTT media platforms among Malaysian audiences. The tremendous response among local viewers proposes the question, why OTT streaming media is so famous? Hence, this article intended to provide a better and comprehensive understanding of streaming media among Malaysian audiences. This study employed the theory of uses and gratification to explain the audience’s motives for using streaming media to achieve gratification. This study aimed to identify OTT streaming media’s overall audience profile and compare the viewing trends of OTT media content based on demographic factors, namely gender, age, race, income, education, and marital status. The data were collected through surveys utilizing a combination of stratified and systematic sampling. A sum of 606 respondents in the Klang Valley participated in this research. This analysis was descriptive by explaining the trends and patterns regarding why OTT streaming media is a favourite of the Malaysian community. The study examined data descriptively using SPSS version 23.
