The report analyzes the performance of network affiliates in the top 50 television markets with respect to programing, female and minority employment, and ownership. It seeks to demonstrate the kind of analysis which can be made, to develop minimum standards, and to design an alternative to government regulation by using public disclosure of :;nformation to spur the industry to improve its performance and to motivate the public to challenge substandard licensees. The analyses of performance are based upon public data supplied by licensees to the FCC; in three separate chapters criteria on programing, employment, and ownership are developed from inspections of the data and the stations are rank-ordered according to their performance.it fourth chapter discusses what citizens can do to improve television in their community. Six appendixes and 17 tables provide detailed data on approximately 150 stations.

For this study, 3,924 magazine requests by the students over an 8-month period were collected and analyzed. The analysis revealed that 96% of the magazine date requests were met by titles whose magazine dates were within the last 5 years; 45 different magazines, going back in date 17 years, met 90% of the magazine title requests; and teachers' decisions appeared to be a notable factor in the sl:udents' use of the periodicals collection. Murdoch Usage: These materials have been donated without restrictions on usage. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH John H. Murdoch was a long-time resident of Lower Allen Township, Cumberland County. He retired after twenty years of service with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and became involved in emergency communications and the activities of Three Mile Island Alert, the anti-nuclear action group, immediately following the accident at Three Mile Island on March 28, 1979. He served for many years as a member of Three Mile Island Alert’s steering committee, and was at one time the secretary of the Pennsylvania Emergency and Communications Council. Throughout the decade after the accident, Murdoch devoted much of his time and energy to the fight against the restart of Three Mile Island. COLLECTION DESCRIPTION The John H. Murdoch Collection consists of various papers, newspaper clippings, audiotapes, and photographs collected by Murdoch during his involvement with Three Mile Island Alert. The collection is divided into 15 series, the majority of which contain papers from the various organizations with which Murdoch had contact. Series 1 - Personal Papers contains John Murdoch’s personal papers that are unrelated to his work with any particular organization. Series 2 - Aamodt Papers contains papers from Norman and Marjorie Aamodt concerning their dealings with the restart of TMI. Series 3 - General Business contains all of the papers that are not exclusively related to any particular organization in the collection.
